“An Open Source Two Stroke Diesel” was a proposed small opposed-piston engine, not a documented, working engine or ready-to-build plan. Hackaday’s April 8, 2016 report described early CAD work inspired by the historic Junkers Jumo 205; the design still needed a prototype, and the available project catalog record lists no assembly instructions or bill of materials.
How the proposed engine was meant to work
In an opposed-piston engine, two pistons share a cylinder and move toward one another. That arrangement is the central idea behind Shane’s proposal. Hackaday presented the historic Junkers Jumo 205 as inspiration, but the proposed small engine should not be mistaken for a scaled or replicated Jumo design.
Hackaday described the Jumo 205 as a 12-piston, six-cylinder aircraft engine. Those figures refer to the historical engine, not Shane’s concept. The 2016 article said the small design was still being worked out in CAD, with about 30 hours of CAD work reported at that time.
Proposed size and project status
Hackaday reported a proposed initial scale of 50 cc, with 125 cc and 250 cc versions intended as larger possibilities. These were plans, not completed engine variants or demonstrated operating displacements. Shane confirmed the early stage in a comment on April 9, 2016: “Please keep in mind that this project is still in the conceptualization phase.” The article said a prototype still needed to be built.

The OHO project record labels the project as a concept and reports no assembly instructions or bill of materials; that catalog metadata should be treated cautiously because the page could not be verified directly. Open Source Ecology’s related overview lists the diesel design among open-source engine designs but leaves its component descriptions and bill of materials blank.
What the sources do—and do not—establish
The 2016 article introduces fuel flexibility as an aspiration, not as a tested capability. The available records do not establish that a prototype was subsequently completed, or provide results for output, efficiency, emissions, fuel consumption, reliability, or operation on any particular fuel. The Jumo 205’s history and the proposed displacement figures cannot stand in for tests of this design.

- 196CC DIESEL ENGINEE: The diesel engine has a power of 2200w and a rotating speed of 3000r/min, which provides you with strong power and ensures that your work can be completed quickly and easily.
- LOW FUEL CONSUMPTION: The fuel tank capacity of the diesel engine is 3L/126.8oz, which can support you to work for a long time. The diesel engine can fully burn diesel oil during operation, and the fuel consumption rate is only ≤280g/ kw. h.Therefore, you do not need to refuel frequently, which is conducive to improving your work efficiency.
- DURABLE AND STURDY: The 196cc 4 stroke diesel engine is made of aluminum alloy, which is durable and not easy to rust. The base of the engine motor is very solid, which can make the machine more stable and not easy to shake during operation.
- RECOIL HAND START: The small diesel engine is equipped with a manual starter, which can easily start the machine by pulling it backward. The handle is ergonomically designed and can be positioned at any speed.
- GOOD HEAT DISSIPATION: The mini diesel motor is equipped with a forced air cooling system and heat dissipation holes, with a good heat dissipation effect. It can reduce the temperature of the motor in time.
Hackaday’s maker framing asks, “Need a water pump?” and its discussion includes the question, “Are there any simple oil engine designs out there?” Those lines convey the article’s practical appeal, but they do not show that this engine was validated for pumping water or that the proposal is a simple build.

Not on the information documented in these sources. A concept description and early CAD work are not equivalent to a complete set of engineering drawings, a parts list, fabrication instructions, or a tested build. Hackaday mentioned welding in a general small-engine fabrication context, but did not provide a validated process or complete tool list for this design. A workshop welder, by itself, is no route to a working engine.

- 🦼【Durable Material】- Made of high-quality aluminum alloy and cast iron, the mini diesel engine is corrosion-resistant and long-lasting. The efficient air filter provides clean air, preventing contaminated air containing impurities or particles from entering
Anyone assessing an open-source engine concept should look for evidence of maturity, accessible drawings and a bill of materials, the fabrication and fuel-system requirements, and measured performance from a running prototype. For this particular proposal, the cited records do not establish those build or test details.
