Tesla introduced its refreshed Model Y in the U.S. in January 2025. That launch is now history: the 2026 lineup has different configurations and reported prices, and Tesla has also launched the six-seat Model Y L. Here’s how the 2025 refresh differs from the current lineup and what to check before buying.
When did the new Tesla Model Y arrive in the U.S.?
Tesla announced the refreshed Model Y in January 2025. Its launch announcement listed the Rear-Wheel Drive at $46,630 and the Launch Series Long Range All-Wheel Drive at $61,630. Those were launch-era prices, including destination and order fees but excluding taxes and other fees—not current quotes. Tesla said prices could change. Tesla’s January 2025 announcement also described estimated savings that relied on assumptions including estimated five-year fuel savings and a federal tax credit for eligible buyers. Do not treat those savings or the credit as currently available without confirming eligibility and current rules.
How much does the 2026 Tesla Model Y cost?
Cars.com reported the following prices for five regular U.S. 2026 Model Y configurations, including a $1,390 destination charge. These are a July 2026 reporting snapshot, not guaranteed live prices; Tesla’s order page is the place to verify current availability and price.

These figures were reported by Cars.com’s 2026 Model Y overview. Tesla’s live Model Y page should be checked for the current orderable trims, pricing, options and delivery estimates.

What to compare between trims
Choose by the configuration you can actually order, rather than assuming a feature or range figure applies across the lineup. Cars.com describes differences in wheels, suspension, interior equipment, screens and seating; Premium AWD has an available third row. Check the configurator for the exact vehicle’s range, acceleration, seating, included equipment and delivery timing. Wheel choice and other configuration details can affect advertised range.
- Base: Compare the lower reported prices with the equipment and seating you need.
- Premium: Check which interior and screen upgrades matter to you; Premium AWD is the regular Model Y configuration reported with an available third row.
- Performance: Compare its price and equipment with the Premium AWD rather than assuming the name alone tells you which features are included.
What’s different about the Model Y L?
The Model Y L is a distinct U.S. variant, not simply another name for the regular Model Y refresh. Reuters reported its U.S. launch on July 2, 2026, as a six-seat, long-wheelbase Model Y with a starting price of $61,990. That reported starting price is above the five regular configurations listed by Cars.com. The main practical distinction is its six-seat layout; shoppers who need that arrangement should compare it with the regular Model Y’s seating options and the Model Y L’s current configurator details.

On May 7, 2026, NHTSA said qualifying 2026 Tesla Model Y vehicles manufactured on or after November 12, 2025, passed its ADAS benchmark. The agency said they met four newly integrated tests—pedestrian automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, blind spot warning and blind spot intervention—and four original criteria: forward collision warning, crash imminent braking, dynamic brake support and lane departure warning.

NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison said, “By successfully passing these new tests, the 2026 Tesla Model Y demonstrates the lifesaving potential of driver assistance technologies and sets a high bar for the industry.” This result applies to the specified qualifying vehicles and tests; it is not a blanket safety rating for every Model Y year or driving situation. What should buyers verify before ordering?
- Confirm the exact trim, drivetrain, seating layout and included options in Tesla’s U.S. configurator.
- Check the live total, including destination and any applicable taxes or fees; reported prices and availability can change.
- Compare the configured vehicle’s range and delivery estimate, not a figure from a different wheel or trim combination.
- Check current tax-credit rules and your eligibility independently instead of relying on the estimated savings in Tesla’s 2025 launch announcement.
