Tesla announced the redesigned Model Y for the U.S., Canada, and Mexico on January 23, 2025. Its first North American version was an all-wheel-drive Launch Series starting at $59,990, with deliveries beginning in March 2025. The price covered a specific, well-equipped launch edition—not every redesigned Model Y and not the lineup’s permanent base price.
What the $59,990 Launch Series included
The redesigned Model Y’s headline price referred to a specific five-seat, all-wheel-drive Launch Series. Tesla listed it with a 320-mile EPA-estimated range and its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) package.

That equipment explains why the launch version cost considerably more than the outgoing entry-level Model Y. At the time of the announcement, the older rear-wheel-drive Model Y was reported to start at $44,990 and offer a 337-mile EPA-estimated range. In other words, the new Launch Series was not simply a $15,000 price increase for an equivalent base model: it bundled all-wheel drive and software that Tesla had typically priced at $8,000 when purchased separately.
Buyers should still compare the actual equipment and pricing of the trim available in their market. Tesla’s $59,990 figure was a January 2025 starting price for the Launch Series, not a promise that every redesigned Model Y would cost $60,000 or include Full Self-Driving.

Deliveries began in March 2025
Tesla’s announcement said the redesigned Model Y would arrive in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico in March 2025. Tesla subsequently confirmed that North American deliveries began that month. The vehicle was being produced at all four of Tesla’s factories, with additional versions expected to follow and offer options similar to those available on the previous Model Y.
The changeover was not operationally simple. Tesla’s first-quarter 2025 filing said the company reconfigured Model Y production lines at all four factories. The work caused several weeks of lost production during the quarter, while the new vehicle’s manufacturing ramp continued. Tesla attributed part of the year-over-year decline in combined Model 3 and Model Y deliveries to that factory transition.
What changed on the redesigned Model Y?
Tesla described the redesign as a comprehensive update rather than a minor styling refresh. The company focused on exterior aerodynamics, cabin quietness, ride comfort, efficiency, and everyday usability.

Exterior: a new front and rear design
The nose is lower and now incorporates a cross-car front lightbar. The treatment draws on the design language used by the Cybertruck and Cybercab. At the back, Tesla added a full-width rear lightbar and redesigned the tailgate, spoiler, rear fascia, diffuser, and wheels.
Tesla says the revised exterior improves aerodynamic efficiency and high-speed stability. Those are manufacturer claims; the company’s stated design goals should not be confused with independent instrumented testing.

Quieter cabin and improved efficiency
Tesla claims the redesigned Model Y produces 22% less road noise, 20% less impact noise, and 20% less wind noise than the previous vehicle. It also claims 5% more range using the same battery energy.
The company attributes those improvements to several detailed changes, including acoustic glass, lower-friction lubrication fluid, optimized gear grinding, reduced brake drag, and tires with lower rolling resistance. These figures describe Tesla’s comparison and have not been presented here as independent test results. Real-world range and noise levels can vary with speed, temperature, tires, road surface, payload, and driving conditions.

The cabin received revised materials and trim, redesigned seats, improved first-row comfort and ventilation, powered second-row recline, and wraparound multicolor ambient lighting.
A new 8-inch touchscreen for rear passengers handles climate controls, gaming, streaming, dual Bluetooth connectivity, and rear USB charging. Tesla also added customizable steering-wheel switches. These changes address some of the practical complaints about the outgoing Model Y, particularly for passengers who spend time in the second row.
Chassis and ride changes
Tesla revised the chassis with a stiffer body structure, new suspension geometry and kinematics, and damping technology borrowed from the upgraded Model 3. Tesla says the result is a quieter, more comfortable ride while preserving the Model Y’s handling character.

Again, that is Tesla’s description of the engineering result. Whether a particular driver notices a major improvement depends on the vehicle’s wheels and tires, road quality, driving style, and comparison vehicle.
Is this the “Juniper” Model Y?
“Juniper” became a widely used informal label for the refreshed Model Y, but Tesla’s official consumer materials call the vehicle the New Model Y. For buyers checking parts, accessories, or ordering information, the important distinction is the production year and the vehicle configuration—not the unofficial nickname.
Current pricing: why the original headline is now historical
The accurate way to read the January 2025 headline is: Tesla announced a redesigned Model Y for North America, with March deliveries and a $59,990 Launch Series starting price.
It is no longer accurate to say that the redesigned Model Y is merely “coming,” or that $59,990 remains the universal starting price. Tesla later changed and expanded the lineup. For example, the U.S. Model Y Performance launched at $59,130 in October 2025. By 2026, Tesla’s U.S. Model Y page listed a Model Y L Premium Launch Series at $63,630 including destination and order fees, but excluding taxes and other fees. That model is a longer-wheelbase variant and should not be treated as the same vehicle as the five-seat 2025 Launch Series.
Prices, availability, destination charges, incentives, software features, and trim names can change by country and over time. Anyone shopping now should use Tesla’s current regional configurator rather than rely on the January 2025 announcement price.

Accessory warning: 2025-plus floor mats are not automatically interchangeable
The redesign makes fitment especially important for owners buying interior protection. Tesla’s own accessory listing identifies its carpet interior mats as compatible with Model Y vehicles produced in 2025 and later. Independent accessory listings also distinguish refreshed 2025-and-newer Model Y fitment from older Model Y fitment.
If you are shopping for 2025 Tesla Model Y floor mats, confirm that the listing explicitly states compatibility with the redesigned 2025-plus vehicle and your seating or wheel configuration. Do not assume that mats made for the 2020–2024 Model Y will fit correctly. Check the seller’s fitment notes, return policy, and whether the product covers the exact rows and cargo areas you need.
Floor mats were not part of the $59,990 Launch Series price, and no specific aftermarket brand is being recommended here as independently tested. The useful distinction is simply model-year fitment: older Model Y accessories may not match the redesigned cabin.

The New Model Y was strategically important because the Model 3 and Model Y represented Tesla’s core volume vehicles. But introducing the redesign temporarily disrupted that volume. Reworking production lines at four factories created a transition period in which Tesla had to balance outgoing inventory, factory downtime, and the gradual ramp-up of the new vehicle.

Bottom line for shoppers
The $60,000 figure was real, but it described a dated, well-equipped Launch Series announced in January 2025. That version included all-wheel drive, a 320-mile EPA-estimated range, and Full Self-Driving (Supervised), which made it materially different from the cheaper outgoing rear-wheel-drive Model Y.
The redesigned vehicle did reach North America in March 2025 and brought substantial exterior, cabin, chassis, noise, and efficiency changes. For a current purchase, however, compare the exact trim, fees, software, wheel choice, and production year shown by Tesla today. If buying accessories, treat 2025-plus fitment as a separate requirement rather than assuming older Model Y parts will carry over.
