Tesla’s latest figures do not prove that its worst problems are still ahead. They show a more mixed picture: the company reported higher revenue in Q2 2026 and strong Q3 delivery volume, but Q2 net income was lower year over year, automotive and energy storage margins weakened, and Tesla expects substantially higher capital spending in 2026. Q3 deliveries alone cannot tell investors whether profits improved; the company’s Q3 financial results were still due on October 21, 2026, as of October 5.
What do Tesla’s latest delivery figures show?
Tesla reported 486,532 vehicle deliveries and 13.7 GWh of energy storage deployments in Q3 2026. Those are company-reported volume measures, not a complete picture of revenue or profit. Tesla cautioned that deliveries and storage deployments are only two measures of financial performance: average selling prices, costs, foreign-exchange movements and other factors also affect quarterly results. Did Tesla’s business improve in Q2 2026?
Revenue rose, but net income did not rise with it. Tesla reported Q2 revenue of $28.24 billion, up 26% year over year, and net income attributable to common stockholders of $1.11 billion, down $58 million from Q2 2025. The figures point to stronger top-line performance alongside slightly lower reported earnings; they do not, by themselves, establish why earnings changed or whether the improvement will continue. Where were margins under pressure?
Tesla’s Q2 2026 gross-margin figures were lower year over year in both automotive and energy generation and storage. The comparisons below are for the same quarter in each year, as reported by Tesla. (Tesla, Q2 2026 Form 10-Q.)

The automotive margin eased by 0.3 percentage points. The energy generation and storage margin fell by 9.9 percentage points. These comparisons identify pressure in the reported margins, but the figures alone do not isolate its causes or show what future quarters will deliver.
What happened to Tesla’s automotive sales in 2025?
For full-year 2025, Tesla reported that automotive sales revenue declined by $6.66 billion, or 9%, compared with 2024. The company attributed the decrease to about 8% fewer cash deliveries and lower average selling prices. This is a measure of automotive sales revenue, not the change in Tesla’s total company revenue. Why is Tesla’s 2026 spending plan important?
In its Q2 2026 filing, Tesla projected 2026 capital expenditures above $25 billion. It said the spending would support AI initiatives, compute infrastructure and data centers, manufacturing and research-and-development facilities, company-operated AI-enabled assets, and its retail, service and charging footprint. This is management’s current forecast, not a report of money already spent. It is higher than the above-$20-billion estimate in the 2025 annual filing. That plan raises the stakes for execution. Tesla says it is investing heavily in research and development to accelerate AI, software and fleet-based profits for further revenue growth, and that this will negatively affect profitability during this phase. The eventual returns from those investments are not established by the available disclosures. Higher spending could build capabilities and future revenue streams, but the outcome depends on whether products and services scale successfully enough to justify the cost.

What could make Tesla’s challenges harder?
Tesla’s filings identify several factors that can affect demand, prices, costs and operating margins. They are risks the company says may matter, not proof that any one outcome is inevitable:
- Demand and affordability: demand can be cyclical, and affordability can affect customers’ ability or willingness to buy.
- Competition and interest rates: competitive pressure and borrowing costs can influence orders and pricing.
- Trade policy and tariffs: policy changes can affect costs and the conditions under which Tesla sells or sources products.
- Suppliers: supplier availability can affect manufacturing and delivery execution.
- New products and manufacturing: the company’s plans depend on executing product launches and production effectively.
Tesla identifies these uncertainties in its Q2 2026 filing and 2025 annual filing. Their importance to results can change over time; the filings do not establish which risk will dominate.

What should readers look for in Tesla’s Q3 financial results?
The Q3 financial report, scheduled for October 21, 2026 as of October 5, is the next evidence needed to judge whether the delivery volume translated into stronger financial performance. The useful comparisons are not just the vehicle and storage totals, but also the financial measures Tesla itself says affect results:
- Revenue and average selling prices, to see how reported volume translated into sales.
- Automotive and energy generation and storage gross margins, to assess the profitability of those businesses.
- Costs and foreign-exchange movements, which Tesla identifies as factors in quarterly results.
- Capital spending and management’s updated outlook, to compare investment plans with the company’s reported results.
Until those results are available, the fairest conclusion is that Tesla has material challenges to manage, but the claim that its “real struggles have only just begun” remains a forecast, not a demonstrated fact. The evidence supports scrutiny of margins, earnings and investment execution—not a verdict based on deliveries alone.
