Tesla’s Profits Fell More Than 70% in Q4 2024—But Revenue Rose

Tesla’s Q4 2024 GAAP profit fell approximately 73% to $2.128 billion, even as revenue and vehicle deliveries rose. A large Q4 2023 tax benefit amplified the decline, while lower prices and the Cybertruck ramp pressured margins.

Tesla’s GAAP net income attributable to common stockholders fell approximately 73% year over year in Q4 2024, from $7.928 billion to $2.128 billion. Yet Tesla’s revenue increased modestly to $25.707 billion, and the company delivered a record-at-the-time 495,570 vehicles. The sharp profit decline was real, but it was amplified by an unusually favorable tax benefit in Q4 2023 and accompanied by pressure on automotive margins.

Revenue rose, but profit conversion weakened

Tesla generated more revenue in the quarter, but each dollar of revenue produced substantially less profit. Total revenue increased 2% year over year, while operating income fell to $1.583 billion. Tesla’s operating margin was 6.2%, compared with the stronger profitability implied by the prior-year quarter.

Measure Q4 2024 Q4 2023 Year-over-year change
Revenue $25.707 billion $25.167 billion Up modestly
Net income attributable to common stockholders $2.128 billion $7.928 billion Down approximately 73%
Total gross profit $4.179 billion — —
GAAP gross margin 16.3% — —
Operating income $1.583 billion — —
Operating margin 6.2% — —

The result was therefore not a collapse in sales or a quarterly loss. Tesla remained profitable, but its reported GAAP earnings were dramatically lower than in the unusually strong comparison quarter.

The tax comparison made the decline look even more extreme

The biggest accounting factor behind the headline percentage was the unusually favorable tax result in Q4 2023. Tesla recognized a substantial tax benefit after releasing valuation allowances on U.S. deferred tax assets. That benefit lifted the prior-year quarter’s bottom line and created an exceptionally high comparison base.

For the full year, Tesla reported a $5.001 billion income-tax benefit in 2023, compared with a $1.837 billion income-tax provision in 2024. The difference does not make the 73% decline in reported net income disappear: Q4 2024 GAAP profit really was much lower. It does mean that the headline percentage should not be read as a 73% deterioration in Tesla’s ordinary operating business.

A useful distinction is the difference between reported net income and underlying operating performance. Taxes can move the amount ultimately attributable to shareholders without changing vehicle deliveries, factory output, or the company’s gross profit on every sale. Tesla’s Q4 result reflected both a weaker operating outcome and a much less favorable tax comparison.

Automotive revenue still dominated the business

Tesla reported $25.707 billion in total revenue for Q4 2024. Automotive revenue accounted for $19.798 billion of that total, made up of:

  • $18.659 billion from automotive sales;
  • $692 million from regulatory credits; and
  • $447 million from automotive leasing.

Energy generation and storage contributed $3.061 billion, while services and other revenue added $2.848 billion. The mix matters because revenue growth is not the same as profit growth. Different businesses have different margins, and a vehicle sold at a lower average price can add revenue while contributing less profit than an earlier sale.

Lower prices and the Cybertruck ramp pressured automotive margins

Tesla’s full-year automotive gross margin declined from 19.4% in 2023 to 18.4% in 2024. Tesla attributed the change primarily to lower average selling prices and the ramp-up of Cybertruck production. Those pressures were partly offset by lower combined vehicle costs, higher regulatory-credit revenue, and increased FSD (Supervised) revenue.

Lower average selling prices can support deliveries and make vehicles more accessible, but they also reduce the profit earned per vehicle unless manufacturing costs fall by a similar amount. That trade-off was central to Tesla’s 2024 results: the company could maintain or increase unit volume while giving up some margin.

A new vehicle ramp can also weigh on profitability before it reaches efficient scale. Production lines, labor, materials, logistics, and other costs associated with launching a model may be higher during the ramp than after the process has stabilized. Tesla specifically identified the Cybertruck ramp as one factor in the annual automotive-margin decline.

Regulatory credits helped, but did not explain the entire result

Tesla recognized $692 million in automotive regulatory-credit revenue in Q4 2024. For the full year, regulatory-credit revenue reached $2.763 billion, up from $1.790 billion in 2023.

Tesla said annual demand for the credits in North America increased as other automakers scaled back their battery-electric-vehicle plans. Because the credits have negligible incremental costs, they can contribute heavily to automotive gross profit when Tesla sells them.

That makes regulatory credits an important part of Tesla’s automotive economics, but it would be inaccurate to say they alone caused—or prevented—the quarterly profit decline. Credit revenue supported gross profit, while lower pricing, product mix, the Cybertruck ramp, operating expenses, taxes, financing income, and other items affected the final result. Credit availability and pricing can also vary, so investors should not automatically treat a strong quarter of credit revenue as a permanent operating trend.

Record deliveries did not produce record GAAP profit

Tesla delivered 495,570 vehicles in Q4 2024, a record at the time, and deployed 11.0 gigawatt-hours of energy-storage products, also a quarterly record at the time. Those figures show why unit volume alone cannot explain the earnings result.

Tesla’s profit depends on more than the number of vehicles delivered. The important variables include:

  • the average selling price of each vehicle;
  • manufacturing and delivery costs;
  • the mix of models and options sold;
  • energy-storage and services revenue;
  • regulatory-credit sales;
  • operating expenses;
  • interest, financing, and other non-operating items; and
  • the tax expense or benefit recorded in the period.

The clearest summary of the quarter is therefore: record deliveries did not produce record GAAP profit. Tesla was growing volume, but it was converting that volume into less reported profit than it had in the prior-year quarter.

What the Q4 2024 report actually says about Tesla

The report presents a mixed picture rather than a single dramatic narrative:

  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
  • Demand and scale were not uniformly weak: vehicle deliveries and energy-storage deployments reached records at the time.
  • Revenue was resilient: total quarterly revenue rose from $25.167 billion to $25.707 billion.
  • Automotive profitability weakened: full-year automotive gross margin fell by one percentage point, with lower prices and the Cybertruck ramp among the cited causes.
  • Low-cost credit revenue was material: regulatory-credit sales provided meaningful support to automotive gross profit.
  • The tax comparison was unusually difficult: Q4 2023 benefited from a large deferred-tax-asset valuation-allowance release, while 2024 included a full-year tax provision.

In other words, Tesla’s Q4 2024 profit decline was real, but the 73% headline figure combines operating-margin pressure with a particularly favorable tax outcome in Q4 2023. The quarter was a warning about profit conversion and pricing power—not evidence that Tesla had stopped selling vehicles or had become unprofitable.

When these results were released

Tesla released these results on January 29, 2025, covering the quarter ended December 31, 2024. They should be identified as Tesla’s Q4 2024 earnings, not as the company’s latest quarterly report. Tesla subsequently released its Q4 and full-year 2025 results on January 28, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Tesla lose money in the fourth quarter of 2024?

No. Tesla remained profitable in Q4 2024. Net income attributable to common stockholders was $2.128 billion, although that was approximately 73% below the $7.928 billion reported in Q4 2023.

Did Tesla’s revenue collapse along with its profit?

No. Tesla’s revenue increased modestly from $25.167 billion in Q4 2023 to $25.707 billion in Q4 2024. The major decline was in profit, not reported sales.

Why was Tesla’s year-over-year profit decline so large?

The comparison was unusually difficult because Q4 2023 included a substantial tax benefit tied to the release of valuation allowances on U.S. deferred tax assets. Tesla’s full-year 2023 income-tax benefit was $5.001 billion, compared with a $1.837 billion income-tax provision in 2024.

How could Tesla’s profit fall while deliveries reached a record?

Tesla delivered 495,570 vehicles and deployed 11.0 GWh of energy-storage products in Q4 2024, both records at the time. However, earnings also depend on pricing, manufacturing costs, product mix, regulatory credits, expenses, financing items, and taxes.

The Bottom Line

Tesla’s Q4 2024 GAAP net income attributable to common stockholders fell approximately 73% to $2.128 billion, even though revenue rose to $25.707 billion and deliveries reached a record at the time. The decline reflected weaker profit conversion—including lower vehicle pricing, the Cybertruck ramp, and margin pressure—alongside a much tougher tax comparison after Q4 2023’s large deferred-tax benefit. Tesla remained profitable; the quarter showed that record volume does not automatically produce record earnings.
