The current U.S.-market Tesla Model S is rated for up to 410 miles of EPA-estimated range, while the faster Model S Plaid is rated for up to 368 miles. Those are Tesla-listed maximum figures, not guarantees that either car will travel that far at sustained highway speeds or in every temperature and wheel configuration.

The regular dual-motor Model S is the range choice. The tri-motor Plaid gives up advertised range in exchange for considerably stronger performance, with Tesla listing 3.1 seconds from 0–60 mph and 670 peak horsepower for the regular Model S versus 1.99 seconds and 1,020 peak horsepower for Plaid.

The current Model S range figures

For the U.S. market, Tesla currently lists these maximum EPA-estimated figures:

Configuration Tesla-listed range What it means
Model S dual-motor AWD Up to 410 miles The maximum-range Model S configuration
Model S Plaid tri-motor AWD Up to 368 miles Less range in exchange for much quicker acceleration and more power

The word up to matters. Tesla’s maximum range depends on the vehicle’s configuration, including its wheels and tires. The number is also an EPA estimate intended to let shoppers compare vehicles under a standardized test procedure. It is not a promise that a Model S will show 410 miles after every full charge or cover 410 miles on a fast highway trip.

These figures apply to the U.S. EPA rating system. Other markets may use WLTP or another regional testing standard, so a Model S advertised with a different number elsewhere should not be compared directly with the U.S. figures without accounting for the testing method.

Why 410 miles is not the same as 410 highway miles

The EPA determines EV range using dynamometer testing rather than by driving every vehicle on one open-road route. The testing includes city, highway, aggressive or high-speed, hot-weather, and cold-weather cycles. The results are adjusted for real-world factors and combined into a rating weighted 55% toward city driving and 45% toward highway driving.

That combined rating is useful for comparison, but it is not a personalized highway forecast. Sustained speed consumes more energy than the EPA number may suggest because aerodynamic drag rises rapidly as speed increases. A Model S driven at 75 or 80 mph for hours, especially into a headwind or over hilly terrain, will generally use more energy per mile than the combined EPA test implies.

Temperature and climate control create another major difference. EPA specifically cautions that cold weather, heating, air conditioning, and high-speed driving can significantly reduce EV range. The battery may also need energy for temperature management, while the cabin heater can be particularly demanding in cold conditions.

Wheel size can change the advertised range

The 410-mile figure belongs to the most efficient current configuration, not necessarily every Model S on the order page. Larger wheels and their associated tires can reduce efficiency through added weight, rolling resistance, and aerodynamic differences.

Current third-party specifications report approximately 380 miles for the regular Model S and approximately 309 miles for Plaid when equipped with 21-inch wheels. Treat those as configuration-specific reference figures rather than a universal penalty for every Model S. Tesla can change wheel, tire, and software ratings, so the live range figure shown for the exact vehicle on Tesla’s order page is the one to verify before buying.

If maximum range is the priority, choose the wheel configuration associated with the highest rating and confirm the tire equipment. If appearance, handling, or performance matters more, the larger wheels may still be worth choosing—but the range trade-off should be understood before placing the order.

3W Floor Mats & Cargo Liner Fit for Tesla Model S 2021-2025
  • ONE CAR ONE DESIGN: 3W floor mats are custom-designed for each vehicle using micrometer-level 3D scanning technology to fully cover the Model S's original floor. We extract the Model S's unique elements and draw inspiration from them and Tesla's brand concept to complete the mat's texture design. This allows for a perfect fit between the mats and your vehicle, seamlessly integrating with the Model S for a naturally perfect look.
  • HIGH-END MATERIALS: The floor liners use Volvo's TPS-SEBS TPE material, which is more eco-friendly and odorless than traditional TPE. It's also more durable, light-resistant, heat-resistant, and waterproof, can be easily washed with water and dry within minutes, making them very convenient.
  • EASY INSTALLATION: The floor mats can be easily installed and removed with a simple placement, and the fully covered anti-slip nails at the bottom prevent the mats from sliding and interfering with the brake and accelerator pedals, ensuring safer driving.
  • EASY TO CLEAN: Our floor liners are easy to clean. No matter with dust, dirt or sand on the mats, just take several minutes wash off it with water or damp towel.
  • INJECTION MOLDING PROCESS: We use injection molding to produce our floor mats, which is the same technique used to make LEGO blocks. This process allows for intricate details and perfect patterns, resulting in deep grooves and exclusive custom designs. Injection molding is the most advanced technique in the market, costing several times more than regular processes. As a result, the quality of our products is significantly superior.

What independent highway tests have found

Independent testing shows why the EPA number should not be converted into a single guaranteed real-world figure.

In one Car and Driver 75-mph highway test, an earlier Model S Plaid traveled 280 miles. The vehicle had a then-claimed EPA range of 348 miles, so the test result was roughly 80% of its advertised figure under that particular combination of vehicle, wheels, weather, route, traffic, and testing procedure.

That is a useful reality check, but it is not a universal formula for the current Plaid. Tesla now lists 368 miles for the current U.S. Plaid, and a different model year, battery configuration, wheel package, ambient temperature, or route could produce a different result. It would be inaccurate to claim that every current Plaid delivers exactly 80% of its EPA rating on the highway.

Car and Driver also previously recorded 320 miles at a 75-mph average in a 2020 Model S Long Range Plus. That older result cannot be combined with today’s range figure as though it were a current test. It is historical context showing how battery version, model year, efficiency changes, wheels, and conditions can materially affect results.

The factors that affect Model S range most

Highway speed

Speed is one of the clearest range variables. Driving faster increases aerodynamic drag, so a steady high-speed trip can use substantially more energy per mile than mixed driving. The EPA test includes a high-speed cycle, but the combined rating still represents a weighted estimate rather than a promise at a particular cruising speed.

Cold and hot weather

Cold weather can reduce range through both battery-temperature management and cabin heating. Hot weather can also require energy for cooling and air conditioning. The effect varies with the severity of the conditions, the length of the trip, the starting battery temperature, and whether the cabin is preconditioned.

Tesla recommends preconditioning the vehicle while it is plugged in. Heating or cooling the cabin before departure uses electricity from the charger instead of drawing as much energy from the battery once the trip begins.

Heating and air conditioning

Climate control is powered by the battery, so using the heater or air conditioner continuously can reduce the miles available. Tesla also describes Range Mode as a way to limit energy use by climate control and other systems, although the feature’s availability and behavior can vary by software version and vehicle configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Range Mode is not a way to turn the 368-mile Plaid into a 410-mile Model S. It is an efficiency setting that may help conserve energy under suitable conditions.

Terrain, wind, traffic, and payload

Uphill travel, headwinds, heavy cargo, roof-mounted equipment, aggressive acceleration, and stop-and-go traffic all affect consumption. Regenerative braking can recover some energy during deceleration, but it cannot eliminate the energy required to climb a hill or push through air at speed. A downhill section may improve the displayed estimate temporarily, while a long climb can reduce it quickly.

Battery age and degradation

A Model S battery does not retain its original usable capacity forever. Tesla’s owner material explains that the maximum displayed range available at a full charge can gradually decline as the battery degrades.

However, the displayed rated range is not a battery-health diagnostic by itself. It can be affected by calibration, software behavior, temperature, wheel configuration, and driving history. A lower displayed number does not automatically prove a serious battery problem, and a high displayed number does not guarantee the same road range as a new battery.

How to plan a long Model S trip

For a real journey, the car’s live trip estimate is more useful than multiplying the EPA figure by an arbitrary percentage. Tesla’s navigation system can account for the selected route and charging stops, while a headline range number cannot account for elevation, wind, weather, traffic, or your chosen speed.

  1. Enter the complete destination in the vehicle navigation. Let the car calculate the route and predicted battery state of charge at the destination and at charging stops.
  2. Use the live estimate rather than the maximum range figure. If conditions deteriorate, such as a sudden temperature drop or strong headwind, reassess the remaining range and charging plan.
  3. Keep a meaningful charging buffer. Do not plan to arrive at a remote charger with no margin for a detour, a full station, a cold battery, or an inaccurate weather forecast. The appropriate buffer depends on the route and conditions, so a fixed number of miles is not right for every trip.
  4. Precondition while plugged in. Heating or cooling the cabin and preparing the battery before departure can reduce the energy drawn from the battery during the opening part of the trip.
  5. Expect charging power to vary. Tesla says Supercharging performance depends on factors including battery size and age, state of charge, battery temperature, vehicle configuration, and the particular Supercharger site.
  6. Allow for charging taper. Charging is generally fastest when the battery is warmer and at a lower state of charge. Power typically tapers as the battery approaches a high state of charge, so a stop long enough to reach the next safe charger can be more practical than waiting for a full battery at every Supercharger.

Tesla says the Model S can add up to 200 miles in 15 minutes under favorable Supercharger conditions. That is an up to claim, not a guaranteed result at every stop. A cold battery, high state of charge, an occupied or power-limited site, or a different vehicle configuration can make the actual session slower.

Tesla’s navigation and charging system may recommend the charge level needed for the next Supercharger. Tesla also says the vehicle can adjust charging behavior or limits in some high-use situations. Software labels and behavior can change, so follow the instructions shown in the car rather than assuming every Model S has identical charging menus.

Useful ownership equipment for road trips

Accessories cannot increase the Model S’s EPA range, but they can make ownership easier. If you are preparing the car for daily use, Tesla Model S all-weather floor mats can protect the interior from water, mud, and road debris. Check the exact model year, body style, and fitment before buying; a mat made for another Tesla model or a different Model S generation may not fit correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For public or destination Level 2 charging, a Tesla Model S J1772 charging adapter may be useful when the station uses a J1772 connector. Confirm that the adapter is compatible with your vehicle, region, and intended charging equipment, and check whether the required adapter is already included with the car or charging setup.

An optional portable tire inflator for Tesla Model S can also be a sensible road-trip tool for checking and correcting tire pressure when you are away from home. It does not guarantee a range improvement and should not replace following the vehicle’s recommended tire-pressure specification. Correct tire pressure supports predictable handling and efficiency; it is not a substitute for planning around weather, speed, and charging stops.

Which Model S is best for range?

Choose the regular dual-motor Model S if minimizing charging stops and maximizing distance between charges are more important than outright acceleration. Its current maximum rating is 410 miles, which is 42 miles higher than the Plaid’s advertised maximum.

Choose Plaid if its performance is the primary reason to buy the car. The Plaid’s 1.99-second Tesla-listed 0–60 mph time and 1,020 peak horsepower are its defining advantages, but its 368-mile maximum rating—and potentially lower configuration-specific rating with larger wheels—make it the less efficient choice for long-distance range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For either version, selecting the efficient wheel package, moderating highway speed, preconditioning while plugged in, and using the car’s route estimate will matter more on a particular trip than the number printed in a marketing headline.

How the Model S range story has changed

Older Model S versions were advertised with considerably lower range figures than the current 410-mile maximum. Battery capacity, software, efficiency improvements, wheel packages, and performance configurations have changed across model years.

That is why an older used Model S should be evaluated using its exact model year, battery version, wheel size, current displayed range, and charging behavior. A historical 2020 Long Range Plus result or an earlier Plaid test can provide context, but neither is a direct forecast for a current Model S.

Source context: The current U.S. figures and performance claims come from Tesla’s Model S listing. EPA range methodology and range caveats come from EPA guidance. The highway benchmarks come from Car and Driver tests of older Model S configurations, and Tesla’s owner and charging material supplies the battery, preconditioning, Range Mode, and Supercharging qualifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Tesla Model S really travel 410 miles on the highway?

It can be rated for up to 410 miles under the U.S. EPA test system, but 410 miles is not a guaranteed highway distance. Sustained speed, wind, terrain, temperature, climate control, wheel size, traffic, payload, and battery age can all reduce the actual result. Use the car’s live navigation estimate for a specific trip.

Which Tesla Model S has the longest range?

The current regular dual-motor Model S has the longest advertised range, at up to 410 miles EPA-estimated in its maximum-range configuration. The tri-motor Model S Plaid is rated for up to 368 miles because it prioritizes performance.

Do 21-inch wheels reduce Model S range?

Yes, the larger wheel-and-tire package can reduce the official range. Current third-party specifications report approximately 380 miles for the regular Model S and 309 miles for Plaid with 21-inch wheels. Verify the exact figure on Tesla’s live order page because wheel and tire ratings can change.

How quickly can a Model S charge?

Tesla says Model S can add up to 200 miles in 15 minutes at a Supercharger under favorable conditions. Actual charging speed varies with state of charge, battery temperature, battery age and size, vehicle configuration, and the specific charging site. Charging power also tapers as the battery fills.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the Model S displayed range prove the battery is healthy?

No. Tesla says the maximum displayed range at a full charge can gradually decline as the battery degrades, but the displayed rated range alone is not a definitive battery-health test. It can also reflect calibration, temperature, software, and configuration factors.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The current U.S. Model S is rated for up to 410 miles, while Model S Plaid is rated for up to 368 miles. The regular Model S is the clear range winner; Plaid is the performance winner. In real road-trip conditions, plan around the live route estimate and charging stops—not the maximum EPA number—especially when driving quickly, using climate control, traveling in cold weather, or choosing larger wheels.
