Tesla registered 19,390 new cars in Germany in 2025, down 48.4% from 2024, according to figures from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) reported by Reuters. That is a severe setback—and a reason to scrutinize Elon Musk’s impact on the brand. But registrations alone cannot prove that Musk caused the decline. Political backlash was one reported pressure, alongside stronger competition, an ageing lineup and buyers’ timing around the updated Model Y. The trend also reversed sharply in 2026: Tesla’s registrations through August were up 182.0% year over year.
What the German registration figures show
The clearest measure of Tesla’s 2025 performance in Germany is new registrations, rather than orders or deliveries. Reuters, citing KBA figures, reported 19,390 Tesla registrations for the full year, 48.4% fewer than in 2024. The figure confirms that Tesla had a deeply difficult year in this market; it does not identify why each buyer did or did not register a car.
A same-month comparison illustrates that Tesla’s decline did not simply mirror a shrinking electric-car market. In September 2025, Tesla’s German volume fell 9.4% year over year while battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations overall rose 31.9%, Reuters reported from KBA data. That is a useful snapshot, not a full-year comparison: it shows Tesla lagging the BEV market in that month, but cannot by itself explain the annual result.

Did Musk’s politics cause Tesla’s slump?
They may have contributed, but the available figures do not establish that they were the sole or decisive cause. Reuters described political backlash against Musk as one factor in Tesla’s German difficulties, while also pointing to competition and an ageing model lineup. That is a plausible explanation reported alongside the sales trend—not proof that a particular political action led to a particular registration loss.
To demonstrate a direct causal effect, the registration totals would need to be separated from other influences, such as product changes, prices, availability and buyer decisions. The cited reporting does not quantify how much of Tesla’s 2025 decline came from any one of those factors. It is fair to say Musk’s public profile created reputational risk for the brand; it is not accurate to present the registration data as a measurement of a boycott or its size.

What else may have weighed on Tesla in 2025?
More competition in a growing EV market
The September comparison matters because it puts Tesla’s result beside the wider German BEV market: registrations for the category rose 31.9% year over year even as Tesla’s fell 9.4%. That points to a brand-specific challenge in that month, with competing electric vehicles among the reported pressures. It does not show which rival brands gained Tesla’s would-be customers, or establish that the same pattern held for every month of 2025.
An ageing lineup and the Model Y changeover
Reuters also cited an ageing lineup. Product-cycle timing can complicate annual comparisons: when buyers anticipate an update, some may wait rather than register the outgoing model. Reuters reported that registrations in parts of Europe rose with the updated Model Y, but the cited reporting does not quantify how much German demand shifted because of the refresh. It is context for the timing of the decline, not a measured explanation for the whole-year fall.

Has Tesla recovered in Germany in 2026?
The latest figures in the cited material show a strong year-to-date rebound, not a continuation of the 2025 collapse. The KBA’s August 2026 brand release listed 32,258 Tesla registrations in Germany from January through August, up 182.0% against the comparable period in 2025. That is a year-to-date comparison, not a full-year result.
A secondary compilation of KBA data reports that Tesla registrations rose 268.7% year over year in September 2026. Because this figure comes from a secondary source rather than the original KBA release, it should be treated as provisional. Monthly changes can also be distorted by comparison effects: the VDA noted that shifts in factory-holiday timing affected the August 2026 market comparison. Neither a single month nor a sharp year-to-date increase, on its own, settles the question of Tesla’s long-term German demand.

The evidence supports a firm conclusion about the result: Tesla’s German new registrations plunged in 2025, and the brand underperformed the broader BEV market in the September comparison. It also supports scrutiny of Musk’s effect on Tesla’s reputation, because political backlash was cited as one pressure. It does not support the stronger claim that Musk alone caused the fall. Competition, product age and Model Y timing belong in the explanation, and the subsequent 2026 rebound means the 2025 result should not be described as an uninterrupted decline.
