Short answer: Tesla’s energy business was its strongest major growth engine in 2025, but the claim needs a time limit. Tesla deployed a record 46.7 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy-storage products in 2025, up 48% year over year, while its broader Energy Generation and Storage segment reached roughly $12.8 billion in annual revenue. Energy also outpaced automotive and Services and Other in the third quarter of 2025.
That momentum was not continuous. In the first quarter of 2026, Energy Generation and Storage revenue fell 12% year over year, while automotive sales revenue rose 20% and Services and Other increased 42%. Tesla’s storage business is becoming a major growth and profit contributor—but “the fastest-growing part of Tesla” is not an accurate unconditional description.
What Tesla’s “energy storage business” includes
Tesla does not report a standalone income statement for Megapack or Powerwall. Instead, it reports an Energy Generation and Storage segment that includes:
- Megapack utility-scale battery systems;
- Powerwall residential batteries;
- solar-generation products and installations; and
- related services, software and energy-management activity.
That distinction matters. Segment revenue, gross profit and margin should not be described as though they came exclusively from battery storage. The available figures show the performance of Tesla’s broader energy segment, while deployment data cover storage products specifically.

The numbers behind the growth claim
Storage deployments grew sharply in 2025
Tesla deployed 46.7 GWh of energy-storage products in 2025, a record that represented approximately 48% year-over-year growth. The company also reported record quarterly deployments in the fourth quarter, driven largely by Megapack.
GWh is a physical-volume measure, not a revenue measure. More deployed battery capacity can coexist with lower revenue growth if average selling prices fall, product mix changes, foreign exchange moves against Tesla, or projects are recognized in a different quarter.
Energy led the major reported segments in Q3 2025
| Period | Energy Generation and Storage | Automotive | Services and Other | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q3 2025, year over year | +44% | +6% | +25% | Energy was the fastest-growing major reported segment |
| Q1 2026, year over year | −12% | Automotive sales +20% | +42% | Energy was not the fastest-growing segment |
| 2025 full year | Approximately $12.8 billion of revenue, up about 26.5% | Lower-growth vehicle business | Not directly comparable as a single product line | Energy was a major diversification driver |
The Q3 comparison comes from Tesla’s quarterly results. The Q1 figures come from Tesla’s Form 10-Q. Services and Other is a mixed category that includes used-vehicle sales, maintenance, collision repair, Supercharging and insurance, so it should not be treated as one product business.
Energy is also becoming an important profit contributor
Growth is more significant when it produces gross profit. In Q1 2026, Tesla reported:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- $952 million in Energy Generation and Storage gross profit;
- a segment gross margin of 39.5%; and
- a combined automotive and Services and Other gross margin of 18.9%.
Tesla also reported approximately $1.1 billion of total Energy gross profit in Q4 2025, described in the company’s update as a fifth consecutive quarterly record.
The 39.5% figure applies to the entire Energy Generation and Storage segment. It is not a disclosed Megapack margin or Powerwall margin. Tesla does not provide enough public detail to calculate the standalone profitability of each product reliably.

The crucial correction: Q1 2026 interrupted the story
In Q1 2026, Energy Generation and Storage revenue declined by $322 million, or 12%, year over year. Tesla attributed the reduction primarily to lower Megapack and Powerwall deployments.
At the same time, automotive sales revenue rose 20% and Services and Other revenue rose 42%. Energy gross margin nevertheless increased from 28.8% to 39.5%.

It can result from lower costs, cheaper materials, product mix, timing effects or other factors. It does not, by itself, demonstrate accelerating demand or a permanent improvement in product economics.
Tesla reported a sequential deployment rebound in Q2 2026, with 13.5 GWh deployed compared with 8.8 GWh in Q1. That supports the view that quarterly results are lumpy, but deployment volume alone does not establish Q2 revenue or profit growth. Tesla explicitly cautions that deployments are only one measure of financial performance.
Why Megapack is driving the energy story
Megapack is Tesla’s utility-scale battery system for utilities, renewable-energy developers, independent power producers and large commercial customers. It addresses a growing need: storing electricity when solar and wind generation is high, then releasing it when demand rises or generation falls.
Several factors support the product’s expansion:
- increasing grid demand and renewable-energy deployment;
- large electricity requirements from data centers and AI infrastructure;
- record Megapack deployments in late 2025;
- factory expansion in California and Shanghai; and
- planned Megapack 3 and Megablock production in Houston.
Tesla’s Q4 2025 update listed installed annual capacity of 40 GWh for Megapack in California and another 40 GWh in Shanghai. It also listed more than 6 GWh of annual Powerwall capacity in Nevada. Tesla planned up to 50 GWh of annual Houston capacity for Megapack 3 and Megablock in 2026.

Those are capacity figures, not proof of actual production. A factory can operate below nameplate capacity because of commissioning, supply constraints, labor, customer timing or manufacturing-ramp problems.
Utility projects also make revenue volatile. Contracts may be recognized as milestones are achieved, meaning a delayed interconnection, permitting issue or customer acceptance date can move a large amount of revenue from one quarter to another.
Why Powerwall matters
Powerwall serves a different market. It is a residential battery used for backup power, solar self-consumption, time shifting and, where available, virtual-power-plant participation.
Its economics depend heavily on local conditions:
- electricity prices and time-of-use rates;
- outage frequency and the value of backup power;
- utility export rules;
- installation and permitting costs;
- local incentives and tax-credit rules;
- financing costs; and
- the availability and terms of virtual-power-plant programs.
Tesla said its Powerwall network supported more than 89,000 virtual-power-plant events across more than one million installed units during 2025. The company also said those events helped homeowners save more than $1 billion in electricity costs. That savings estimate is Tesla’s figure and should be treated as a company-reported claim, not an independently audited industry measurement.

Powerwall’s distributed installed base may give Tesla value beyond hardware sales: connected batteries can provide grid services and help Tesla build an energy-management platform. But residential demand is more exposed than utility-scale demand to household financing, installer capacity, incentives and local regulation.

- Year-over-year revenue growth: indicates business scale, but is affected by pricing, mix and accounting timing.
- Storage deployments in GWh: shows physical volume, but is not a financial measure.
- Gross profit and gross margin: shows economic contribution, but is reported for the wider segment rather than individual products.
- Trailing-twelve-month performance: reduces the distortion caused by large, unevenly timed projects.
Sequential quarterly comparisons are particularly risky. A single Megapack project can materially change a quarter, while a factory ramp can temporarily restrict supply. Higher GWh can also come with lower average selling prices, and tariffs or battery-cell costs can pressure margins even when demand remains strong.
Is energy now more important than cars?
No—not by overall scale. Automotive remains Tesla’s largest business by revenue and manufacturing footprint. Energy storage has become disproportionately important as a source of growth and, increasingly, gross profit, but it has not overtaken the automotive business.
The more accurate interpretation is that Tesla is diversifying. The company’s energy segment can grow faster than vehicles from a smaller base, while potentially earning stronger segment margins. That makes energy strategically important without making Tesla primarily an energy company today.
What could limit future growth?
- Project timing: utility-scale contracts are large and lumpy, and milestone recognition can shift revenue between quarters.
- Pricing pressure: more GWh does not guarantee proportional revenue if average selling prices decline.
- Battery costs and tariffs: cells, raw materials, shipping and trade policy can affect margins.
- Manufacturing execution: planned capacity is valuable only if factories ramp successfully and customers can be supplied.
- Interconnection and permitting: grid projects can be delayed by approvals, site constraints and transmission availability.
- Residential policy exposure: Powerwall demand can change with incentives, tax credits, utility compensation and financing rates.
- Competition: utilities and homeowners can choose other battery suppliers, integrators and software platforms.
- Product mix: Megapack, Powerwall and solar have different sales cycles, costs and margins.
What this means for Tesla buyers
Tesla’s corporate energy growth does not prove that Powerwall is the best residential battery for every home. A homeowner should compare usable capacity, continuous and peak output, backup configuration, solar compatibility, warranty and throughput terms, installer availability, incentives, time-of-use savings and virtual-power-plant eligibility.
Powerwall may suit homeowners seeking an integrated Tesla solar-and-storage ecosystem, backup power or participation in a local grid program. It may be a poor fit where electricity is inexpensive, outages are rare, incentives are weak, installation support is limited or whole-home high-surge backup is required beyond the proposed system design. Current installed pricing is location-specific and should be checked through Tesla’s energy-products page and live quotation process rather than copied from a generic price guide.
Megapack is a commercial project product, not a consumer purchase. Utilities and developers need site control, engineering, permitting, grid-interconnection approval and project-specific commercial terms. Tesla provides a commercial contact path through its Megapack design page.

Verdict
Tesla’s energy-storage business was the company’s standout major growth story in 2025. Record deployments, strong Energy segment revenue growth, high reported segment margins and factory expansion all support that conclusion.
But the headline becomes misleading when it is treated as a permanent, quarter-by-quarter fact. Q1 2026 showed Energy revenue falling 12% while automotive sales and Services and Other grew. The best defensible description is narrower: Tesla’s Energy Generation and Storage segment is becoming one of its fastest-growing and most profitable major businesses, with storage volume showing strong structural momentum but significant quarterly volatility.
