Apple’s next-generation CarPlay did launch in 2025—but Apple calls it CarPlay Ultra, not “CarPlay 2.0.” Apple announced the rollout on May 15, 2025, beginning with new Aston Martin vehicle orders in the United States and Canada. It is a limited, vehicle-specific system—not a universal software update for every car that already supports standard CarPlay.
What happened to CarPlay 2.0?
“CarPlay 2.0” was widely used by media and enthusiasts for Apple’s next-generation in-car platform. It was never Apple’s official product name. Apple now brands the system CarPlay Ultra.

Apple originally previewed the deeper CarPlay experience at WWDC in June 2022, promising integration across multiple vehicle displays rather than only the central infotainment screen. Previews involving Porsche and Aston Martin followed in 2023. After Apple removed earlier 2024 timing language from its CarPlay website in January 2025, the launch appeared delayed. The delay ultimately ended with the May 15, 2025 announcement.
That announcement was a genuine launch, but not a broad release across the CarPlay ecosystem. Initial availability was limited to eligible Aston Martin vehicles and the United States and Canada, with further expansion planned.

What is CarPlay Ultra?
Standard CarPlay projects selected iPhone apps and information onto a compatible vehicle’s infotainment display. CarPlay Ultra is designed to reach much further into the vehicle’s interface.
Depending on the automaker and vehicle, CarPlay Ultra can extend across:
- the central infotainment display;
- the digital instrument cluster; and
- other driver-facing screens.
It can show information such as speed, engine speed, fuel level, and temperature in the instrument cluster, alongside selected iPhone and vehicle information. It can also provide access to vehicle functions through onscreen controls, physical buttons, or Siri.
Vehicle controls and automaker customization
CarPlay Ultra is intended to control more than navigation, music, and messages. Supported implementations may include standard functions such as climate control and radio, as well as vehicle-specific features including audio configuration and performance settings.
Automakers retain control over the visual presentation. They can supply themes, colors, wallpapers, and design elements that reflect the brand’s identity. The result should be a unified Apple-powered experience, but it will not look or function identically in every vehicle.

The important distinction is that CarPlay Ultra requires substantial automaker integration. A large touchscreen, a digital gauge cluster, or ordinary CarPlay support is not enough on its own.
CarPlay Ultra release date and first vehicles
Apple announced that CarPlay Ultra began rolling out on May 15, 2025. The initial launch covered new Aston Martin vehicle orders in the United States and Canada.

That is a narrow example of upgrade eligibility, not evidence that all older Aston Martin vehicles—or existing cars from other brands—can be converted.
Apple said the system would expand globally over the following 12 months. That described the intended rollout, not a guarantee that every model or market would receive it.
Which automakers support CarPlay Ultra?
Confirmed initial availability: Aston Martin vehicles in the United States and Canada, subject to the specific vehicle and infotainment configuration.

In its launch announcement, Apple also said that Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis had newly committed to the technology and that additional automakers were working toward support. A commitment should not be read as blanket availability across every model, model year, country, or trim level.
Apple’s standard CarPlay vehicle list is not a CarPlay Ultra compatibility list. If a vehicle appears there, that confirms ordinary CarPlay compatibility only. Prospective buyers should look for a manufacturer announcement naming the exact model, model year, market, and infotainment system.
Which iPhones work with CarPlay Ultra?
For the initial rollout, Apple specified:
- iPhone 12 or later
- iOS 18.5 or later
Those were the requirements Apple cited for the launch. Compatibility can change as Apple and automakers update their systems, so owners should check the current Apple and manufacturer documentation rather than assume that every future iPhone or iOS release is supported automatically.
Can an existing CarPlay car be upgraded?
Usually, you should assume that eligibility is model-specific and hardware-dependent until the automaker says otherwise.
CarPlay Ultra may require a compatible central display, digital instrument cluster, vehicle-data connection, and software capable of exposing climate, audio, performance, and other controls. A car that already runs standard CarPlay may lack one or more of those components.

Apple’s launch announcement described a dealer-installed software update for certain existing Aston Martin vehicles equipped with the latest next-generation infotainment system. It did not announce a universal retrofit program for all CarPlay-equipped cars.
Before buying a vehicle—or assuming your current car qualifies—verify:
- the exact model and model year;
- the infotainment-system generation;
- the instrument-cluster and display hardware;
- your country or market;
- whether the automaker has announced an update path;
- whether installation is over the air or dealer-only; and
- whether the update is free, paid, or bundled with another service.
Do not treat a generic dealer statement that a brand “supports next-generation CarPlay” as confirmation for every vehicle in that brand’s range.

These are three related but separate developments:
- Standard CarPlay: the existing iPhone projection system available in many compatible vehicles.
- CarPlay Ultra: the deeper integration that can span the instrument cluster, vehicle controls, and multiple displays.
- CarPlay software updates: improvements delivered through iOS, which can change the interface and supported features without adding the vehicle hardware integration required for CarPlay Ultra.
Apple’s iOS 26 announcement included standard CarPlay improvements such as a compact incoming-call view, Tapbacks and pinned conversations in Messages, widgets, Live Activities, and a redesigned appearance. Apple said those improvements also come to CarPlay Ultra.

An iPhone update can deliver software features; only a participating automaker can provide the vehicle integration, supported displays, and access to car controls.

Is CarPlay Ultra a separate purchase?
Apple’s cited launch material does not identify CarPlay Ultra as a standalone app, subscription, aftermarket dongle, or universal downloadable upgrade. The practical purchase is a supported vehicle with compatible infotainment hardware, plus a compatible iPhone.
Apple has not announced a standalone consumer price or subscription for CarPlay Ultra in the cited material. Any vehicle premium or dealer-update charge depends on the automaker, model, market, and update policy.
Generic wireless CarPlay adapters cannot generally create CarPlay Ultra. They may add or improve ordinary CarPlay connectivity, but they cannot supply the automaker-level integration needed for an instrument cluster, vehicle controls, and brand-specific functions.

CarPlay Ultra may be valuable if you want iPhone navigation, communication, media, widgets, and vehicle information presented across the driver’s displays. But it should be treated as one feature in a vehicle purchase—not as a reason to overlook the car’s safety, reliability, ergonomics, operating costs, or native controls.
Before committing to a vehicle, ask the manufacturer or dealer:
- Is CarPlay Ultra enabled at delivery?
- Does the exact model and model year support it?
- Is the feature standard or optional?
- Are the instrument cluster and all relevant displays supported?
- Is a dealer installation required?
- Can the system be updated over the air?
- Is the update free, and does it remain available if the vehicle changes owners?
- Which functions remain available when the iPhone is disconnected?
- How are vehicle and iPhone data handled?
For buyers who only need phone-based navigation, music, calls, and messaging, ordinary CarPlay remains the more widely available option. Apple continues to publish a separate list of compatible standard-CarPlay vehicles.

Automakers control the final rollout. Apple provides the platform and framework, but the manufacturer decides which vehicles receive it, which displays and controls are exposed, whether older vehicles are updated, and where support is available. Apple’s developer documentation for automakers covers both standard CarPlay and CarPlay Ultra integration.
