The company said it had built its first validation Cybertruck with in-house dry-cathode 4680 cells and described the achievement as a potential cost-reduction milestone “once ramped.” Tesla has not quantified the savings in the cited updates.
What Tesla announced
On its Q2 2024 earnings call, Tesla said it had built its first validation Cybertruck using dry-cathode cells made on mass-production equipment. The company also said at the time that it was on track for a Q4 production launch. That was a forecast, not confirmation that the launch happened or that customer Cybertrucks received the cells. Notebookcheck’s July 2024 report covered the prototype milestone and quoted Tesla’s remarks.
A validation vehicle is used to assess a design or manufacturing process; it does not, by itself, establish a regular production rollout. Tesla’s Q2 2024 update deck called the work “a major cost reduction milestone once ramped,” making the anticipated savings conditional on scaling production.
What “dry-cathode 4680” means
4680 describes a cylindrical cell format. The manufacturing distinction in this announcement is how the electrode is made. Conventional wet coating uses a solvent-based process and requires an energy-intensive drying stage. Dry coating is intended to avoid solvent use and that drying step, with the potential to reduce factory energy use, footprint, and process costs.

- PULL-BACK ACTION: Internal die-cast drive gears and tension spring deliver authentic pull-back power — simply pull rearward and release to zoom forward, no batteries required.
- WORKING LED LIGHTS: Functional LED lights add a realistic touch to this detailed model truck, bringing it to life (batteries required for lights).
- OPENING DOORS: Fully functional doors open and close, revealing a detailed interior that enhances the authenticity of this collectible model.
- GREAT FOR COLLECTORS & KIDS: This 1:36 scale metal die-cast Cybertruck model makes an impressive display piece or an exciting toy for play.
Those are reasons the method may lower manufacturing costs—not proof that Tesla has already made a Cybertruck battery cheaper. The cited material gives no verified cost per cell, yield comparison, or realized savings figure for the prototype.
Wet coating and dry coating compared
| Factor | Conventional wet coating | Dry coating |
|---|---|---|
| Solvent and drying | Uses solvent and an energy-intensive electrode-drying step, as summarized in the 2024 report. | Designed to avoid solvent use and the electrode-drying step, as summarized in the 2024 report. |
| Potential manufacturing effect | Requires energy and factory space for the conventional process steps. | Potentially reduces process energy, factory footprint, and manufacturing costs; Tesla described savings as conditional on ramping. |
| Scale-up, yield, and cost per cell | A current matched comparison is not stated in the cited sources. | Current Cybertruck-specific yield and cost-per-cell figures are not stated in the cited sources. |
Why a prototype does not settle the production question
Dry coating is not only a chemistry or equipment change: manufacturers also have to make the process work consistently at production speed and scale. Reuters’ December 2023 report described Tesla’s difficulty scaling dry cathode coating. It estimated Austin output at enough cells for about 24,000 Cybertrucks per year, based on Reuters’ calculations using public data and unpublished figures from sources—not on an official Tesla production metric. The estimate is historical, not a current output rate. Reuters’ account, published via Investing.com, also quoted a battery consultant describing Tesla’s effort as an attempt to commercialize dry coating for large EV batteries at mass scale; that was a 2023 assessment, not a statement of the industry’s position today.

That context helps distinguish three separate milestones: building a validation vehicle, starting a production ramp, and delivering vehicles to customers with the cells. The 2024 announcement established the first of those. The cited material does not establish the latter two for Cybertruck.
What Tesla has said since
Tesla’s Q4 2025 update, published January 28, 2026, says the company produces dry-electrode 4680 cells with both anode and cathode made in Austin and has begun producing 4680 battery packs for certain Model Ys. The update does not identify Cybertruck as an application of those dry-electrode cells, so it does not confirm a Cybertruck rollout. Tesla lists 40 GWh of installed annual capacity for Texas 4680 production; installed capacity is not the same as current production, and it cannot be converted into Cybertruck output without additional supported assumptions. Tesla’s Q4 2025 update is the company’s latest cited production context here.

Keep the tax-credit claim separate
Tesla’s Q1 2025 update said it launched an IRA-compliant 4680 cell, making Cybertruck eligible for a $7,500 consumer tax credit. That was Tesla’s statement in April 2025; it is separate from the prospective manufacturing savings associated with dry-cathode coating. Tax-credit rules and an individual buyer’s eligibility can change, so buyers should check current requirements rather than treat the historical company statement as a guarantee. Tesla’s Q1 2025 update contains the company’s announcement.

The cited company updates do not establish that Tesla subsequently delivered customer Cybertrucks with dry-cathode 4680 cells, nor do they disclose realized Cybertruck battery-cost savings. The 2024 milestone showed that Tesla had built a validation vehicle; the later update reports dry-electrode cell and Model Y pack production without naming Cybertruck.
