Tesla’s Biggest Competitors in 2024, Ranked by Competitive Impact

BYD was Tesla’s biggest overall rival in 2024, while Volkswagen Group, Ford, Hyundai-Kia, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, GM, Rivian, and Lucid competed in different markets and vehicle segments. Here’s why the ranking is not a simple EV-sales table.

BYD was Tesla’s biggest overall competitor in 2024. It sold 4,272,145 new-energy vehicles worldwide, although that figure includes both battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Tesla delivered 1,789,226 vehicles, virtually all of them fully electric. That difference makes BYD the strongest strategic rival, but not a clean pure-BEV sales comparison.

Volkswagen Group was the most significant traditional automaker challenger by global scale and brand reach. Ford was the clearest established U.S. rival, while Hyundai-Kia offered some of the broadest practical alternatives across crossovers, sedans, pickups, and three-row SUVs. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, Rivian, and Lucid also challenged Tesla in important segments, even when their 2024 electric-vehicle volumes were much smaller.

How Tesla’s competitors are ranked

This is a ranking of competitive importance, not a strict league table of battery-electric-vehicle sales. Automakers reported 2024 results using different categories:

  • Tesla reported vehicle deliveries that were effectively all-electric.
  • BYD reported new-energy-vehicle sales, including battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.
  • Volkswagen Group reported total group deliveries, with electric vehicles representing only part of that figure.
  • BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Kia, and others reported different combinations of BEV, electrified, brand, regional, or total-vehicle sales.

The ranking therefore weighs four factors: product overlap with Tesla, 2024 sales scale, geographic reach, and the competitor’s ability to pressure Tesla through manufacturing, pricing, technology, dealer coverage, or brand strength.

Rank Competitor Why it matters Most relevant Tesla overlap
1 BYD Largest overall electrified-vehicle rival with a broad, lower-cost portfolio Model 3 and Model Y; affordable and mid-market EVs
2 Volkswagen Group Massive global production, dealer, financing, and multi-brand footprint Model 3, Model Y, and premium Tesla models
3 Ford Strongest established U.S. challenger in crossovers, pickups, and commercial EVs Model Y, Cybertruck, and commercial vehicles
4 Hyundai-Kia Broad, practical EV range with strong body-style and fast-charging coverage Model 3, Model Y, Model X, and future compact EV competition
5 BMW Substantial premium BEV volume and a wide luxury lineup Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X
6 Mercedes-Benz Global luxury reach and competition at the upper end of the market Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y
7 General Motors Large U.S. incumbent with electric SUVs, pickups, and luxury models Model Y, Cybertruck, Model X, and mainstream EVs
8 Rivian Direct lifestyle-focused electric pickup and SUV rival Cybertruck and Model X
9 Lucid Focused premium-EV challenger emphasizing range and luxury Model S and Model X

The figures below refer to calendar-year 2024. Some companies published their results or annual reports in early 2025, but later developments are not used to rewrite this historical ranking.

1. BYD: Tesla’s biggest overall global rival

BYD was the most important competitor to Tesla in 2024 because it combined scale, aggressive pricing, a broad product range, and a growing international presence. The company reported 4,272,145 new-energy-vehicle sales during the year. That number includes both battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, so it should not be presented as a pure-EV total.

Tesla delivered 1,789,226 vehicles in 2024, including 1,704,093 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. BYD’s reported new-energy total was therefore much higher, but the categories are different. The available figures do not establish that BYD sold more pure battery-electric vehicles than Tesla.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BYD’s competitive threat came from its coverage of several price and vehicle categories. Its portfolio included compact cars, sedans, SUVs, affordable EVs, mid-market EVs, and plug-in hybrids. Tesla’s 2024 range was much more concentrated around the Model 3 and Model Y, with the Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck serving narrower segments.

That breadth gave BYD several advantages:

  • It could appeal to buyers who found Tesla’s lineup too expensive or too limited.
  • Its plug-in hybrids gave consumers an electrified option where charging access or EV range remained a concern.
  • It competed directly in China, Tesla’s most important manufacturing and sales markets outside the United States.
  • Its mix of affordable and premium products made it a broader market competitor than a single-model challenger.

Verdict: BYD is the best answer to the question of Tesla’s biggest competitor overall, provided the BEV-versus-NEV distinction is made clear.

2. Volkswagen Group: the biggest legacy-automaker challenge

Volkswagen Group was Tesla’s most consequential traditional automaker competitor by global scale and portfolio breadth. The group delivered 9,027,424 vehicles in 2024, including 8,693,208 passenger cars. Those totals include combustion-powered vehicles, hybrids, and EVs, so they are not comparable with Tesla’s delivery number as an electric-sales ranking.

Volkswagen’s importance came from its ability to compete across numerous markets and price levels. Its electric portfolio included products from Volkswagen, Škoda, CUPRA, Audi, Porsche, and other brands. Important volume EVs included the Volkswagen ID.4, Volkswagen ID.3, Škoda Enyaq, and CUPRA Born, while Audi and Porsche covered premium and performance segments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compared with Tesla, Volkswagen Group offered several structural advantages:

  • Portfolio breadth: buyers could choose mainstream hatchbacks, compact SUVs, premium sedans, luxury SUVs, performance cars, and commercial vehicles.
  • Retail infrastructure: established dealerships, service centers, financing operations, and regional distribution networks supported ownership in markets where Tesla’s direct-sales model had less reach.
  • Manufacturing scale: even a relatively small EV share of a roughly nine-million-vehicle business represents substantial industrial capacity.
  • Brand segmentation: Volkswagen could target different customers without relying on one Tesla-style brand identity.

The weakness was that Volkswagen’s EV performance and software execution were uneven across markets. Total group deliveries also declined from 2023. Nevertheless, the company remained strategically important because its existing infrastructure could support a much larger EV push.

Verdict: Volkswagen Group was Tesla’s biggest legacy-automaker challenger by global reach and product breadth, but not necessarily the second-largest seller of pure battery-electric vehicles.

3. Ford: Tesla’s clearest established U.S. challenger

Ford was particularly important in the United States, where it competed with Tesla in electric crossovers, pickups, and commercial vehicles. Ford reported 44,180 EV sales during the first half of 2024 and said its Ford-brand EV sales trailed only Tesla during that period. This is a U.S. and first-half comparison, not a global full-year EV ranking.

Ford’s key electric models were the Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, and E-Transit. The Mach-E was Ford’s closest direct alternative to the Model Y, while the F-150 Lightning challenged Tesla’s Cybertruck in the electric-pickup market. The E-Transit gave Ford an advantage in commercial-vehicle applications where Tesla had no directly comparable mass-market van in 2024.

Ford’s strongest competitive assets were its existing truck reputation, dealer network, U.S. manufacturing presence, and familiarity with fleet customers. The F-150 Lightning also benefited from the enormous recognition of the F-Series name. Ford described the Lightning as America’s best-selling electric pickup and the Mach-E as one of the country’s leading EVs; those are U.S.-market claims and should not be generalized into global leadership.

Ford did not match Tesla’s EV-only focus or charging-network recognition. Its mixed-powertrain strategy also meant that electric vehicles competed for investment and production capacity alongside gasoline and hybrid models. Even so, Ford was one of the most credible choices for an American buyer who wanted an electric truck, crossover, or work van backed by an established automaker.

Verdict: Ford belongs near the top of any U.S.-focused Tesla competitor list, particularly for shoppers comparing the Model Y with the Mustang Mach-E or the Cybertruck with the F-150 Lightning.

4. Hyundai-Kia: broad and practical EV competition

Hyundai and Kia formed one of Tesla’s strongest product competitors in 2024. The group offered a wider selection of body styles and vehicle configurations than Tesla, including the Hyundai IONIQ 5, Hyundai IONIQ 6, Kia EV3, and Kia EV9.

Kia sold 3,089,457 vehicles globally in 2024 and identified the EV3 and its broader EV lineup as important growth products. Hyundai reported record global sales and continued developing both battery-electric and hydrogen-fuel-cell vehicles. Those total-sales figures should not be mistaken for BEV totals, but they demonstrate the group’s global distribution and manufacturing reach.

Hyundai-Kia’s threat to Tesla was less about matching Tesla’s total delivery count and more about giving buyers meaningful alternatives:

  • The IONIQ 5 offered crossover practicality, distinctive styling, and a high-speed charging architecture.
  • The IONIQ 6 competed in the electric sedan category occupied by the Model 3, but with a different emphasis on aerodynamics, design, and cabin presentation.
  • The Kia EV3 expanded the group’s presence into the compact-EV segment.
  • The Kia EV9 gave buyers a three-row electric SUV option, a body style Tesla’s 2024 lineup covered only at a much higher price through the Model X.

Hyundai and Kia also appealed to shoppers who preferred conventional controls, familiar dealer service, and more variation in interior design. Tesla retained advantages in software integration, brand recognition among EV-first buyers, and the perceived convenience of its charging ecosystem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: Hyundai-Kia was a major product and technology competitor, especially for buyers who wanted more body styles, fast charging, or traditional automaker support.

5. BMW: a meaningful premium BEV competitor

BMW Group delivered 426,536 battery-electric vehicles in 2024. BEVs represented 17.4% of its total automobile deliveries. Its electric lineup included the i4, i5, i7, iX, iX1, and iX2, with the iX1 identified as the BMW brand’s most successful BEV model during the reporting year.

BMW competed with Tesla at several price points. The i4 overlapped with the Model 3, the iX and iX1 competed in SUV categories associated with the Model Y, and the i5, i7, and larger iX addressed customers considering the Model S or Model X. BMW’s performance credentials also made it relevant to drivers who wanted an electric car without abandoning a conventional luxury-performance brand.

BMW’s advantages included brand heritage, a mature dealer and service network, product variety, and the ability to sell gasoline, hybrid, and electric vehicles to different customers. Tesla’s counteradvantages were its EV-only identity, more unified software experience, and stronger association with the modern electric-car category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BMW’s BEV volume was far below Tesla’s total deliveries, but raw volume understates the importance of a competitor in a premium segment. A BMW buyer may be cross-shopping the same high-value sedan or SUV purchase as a Tesla buyer, even if the companies’ total sales are very different.

Verdict: BMW was one of Tesla’s strongest premium competitors in 2024, though not a volume peer across the entire EV market.

6. Mercedes-Benz: upper-end luxury competition

Mercedes-Benz remained an important competitor at the premium and luxury end of the EV market. Mercedes-Benz Cars sold 1,983,400 vehicles in 2024, while Mercedes-Benz Vans sold 405,600. The company reported 19,500 electric vans during the year. Mercedes also said that slower EV adoption in core markets reduced battery-electric passenger-car sales.

Mercedes competed most directly with Tesla’s Model S and Model X through its luxury electric cars and SUVs. Depending on market and pricing, its electric vehicles also overlapped with the Model 3 and Model Y. The EQ range gave Mercedes an EV presence while allowing it to use its established luxury design language, customer relationships, and worldwide retail network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its electric vans were strategically relevant as well, although they did not compete directly with Tesla’s passenger vehicles. They demonstrated how a legacy manufacturer could apply electrification across commercial as well as consumer categories.

Mercedes-Benz’s 2024 EV momentum was weaker than Tesla’s in absolute volume, and its reported figures do not support calling it a BEV sales leader. Its importance was instead tied to the broader competitive pressure from established luxury brands with deep customer loyalty and global service operations.

Verdict: Mercedes-Benz was a significant premium and technology competitor, but it should not be portrayed as one of 2024’s electric-volume leaders.

7. General Motors: a major U.S. incumbent expanding its EV range

General Motors challenged Tesla through Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC electric vehicles. Its 2024 lineup included the Chevrolet Equinox EV, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, Cadillac Lyriq, and GMC Hummer EV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GM’s competitive importance came from U.S. scale and expertise in trucks, SUVs, fleet sales, and mainstream vehicle brands. The company could place EVs in familiar nameplates and serve buyers who already used Chevrolet, Cadillac, or GMC dealers. The Equinox EV was described by GM as an important fourth-quarter sales driver, while the Lyriq addressed the luxury-electric SUV market and the Silverado EV and Hummer EV covered electric-truck niches.

GM’s lineup gave it potential overlap with the Model Y, Model X, and Cybertruck. Its eventual mainstream strength depended on execution at the model level rather than on one unified EV range. GM’s 2024 sales release established its U.S. market importance, but not a global BEV ranking, so its position here is intentionally U.S.-centric.

Its user-friendly design makes tire changes quick and stress-free, embodying the excellence of a true tesla tire repair kit.

Verdict: GM was a major incumbent competitor with the products and customer base to challenge Tesla in American crossovers, luxury SUVs, and electric pickups, even though its EV rollout was more gradual and model-specific.

8. Rivian: a focused electric pickup and SUV rival

Rivian was not a volume peer of Tesla in 2024, but it was one of the most direct electric-only competitors in specific vehicle categories. The R1T pickup and R1S SUV overlapped with the Tesla Cybertruck and Model X in premium, lifestyle, and adventure-oriented positioning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rivian differentiated itself through off-road capability, outdoor-oriented design, generous utility features, and a brand identity built around electric adventure vehicles. Tesla offered stronger overall scale and a broader charging-network reputation, while Rivian remained focused on a much narrower product portfolio.

The company’s 2024 Form 10-K documented its manufacturing operations and the financial pressure associated with scaling production and deliveries. That constraint is important: Rivian had direct product relevance but substantially less ability than BYD, Volkswagen, Ford, or Hyundai-Kia to pressure Tesla across the mass market.

Verdict: Rivian was a focused niche competitor, not one of Tesla’s biggest competitors by sales.

9. Lucid: a technology-focused luxury-EV rival

Lucid competed most directly with Tesla’s Model S through the Lucid Air sedan. Its planned Lucid Gravity SUV also targeted the type of luxury utility market represented by the Model X as it approached market launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lucid’s appeal centered on luxury, range, power, efficiency, and interior design. Those attributes made it a meaningful technology and product competitor even though its production base was small and its overall market impact was far below that of Tesla, BYD, Volkswagen Group, Ford, or Hyundai-Kia.

Lucid’s position also illustrates why a competitor does not need high volume to matter in every comparison. A buyer seeking a premium electric sedan with long range might reasonably compare the Air with the Model S, regardless of the enormous difference in company scale.

Verdict: Lucid was a focused premium-EV rival whose importance was segment-specific rather than volume-based.

Which competitor is the biggest in each market?

Globally

BYD is the strongest overall answer because its 2024 new-energy sales were more than twice Tesla’s reported deliveries, even though BYD’s figure included plug-in hybrids. Volkswagen Group is the most powerful traditional automaker challenger because of its global brands, factories, dealers, and total scale.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the United States

Ford was the clearest established direct rival, especially for electric crossovers and pickups. General Motors was also highly significant because of its Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC coverage. Rivian was more directly electric-only in its product identity, but much smaller in volume and market reach.

In premium vehicles

BMW and Mercedes-Benz represented the strongest established luxury competition, while Lucid was the most focused high-end EV challenger. The right comparison depends on the vehicle: a Model 3 buyer may look at the BMW i4, while a Model S buyer may consider the BMW i7, Mercedes EQ models, or Lucid Air.

For the broadest range of body styles

Hyundai-Kia and Volkswagen Group had the clearest advantage. Their lineups extended across compact cars, sedans, crossovers, larger SUVs, and, in Kia’s case, a three-row electric SUV. Tesla’s 2024 lineup was comparatively concentrated around the Model 3 and Model Y.

Why a pure sales ranking would be misleading

A simple list sorted by the largest reported number would produce a distorted result. Volkswagen Group’s 9,027,424 deliveries included combustion vehicles, while BYD’s 4,272,145 new-energy vehicles included plug-in hybrids. Tesla’s 1,789,226 deliveries were effectively all-electric. BMW’s 426,536 figure was BEV-specific, but Ford’s cited figure covered only the first half of the year and was a U.S. brand comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are useful figures, but they answer different questions:

  • Total deliveries show the size of an automaker’s overall industrial and retail operation.
  • BEV deliveries show pure-electric sales more directly.
  • NEV deliveries show broader electrified-vehicle scale, but may include plug-in hybrids.
  • Regional figures show competitive strength in a particular market, not worldwide leadership.
  • Product overlap shows whether a company is actually competing for the same buyer, even when its sales are smaller.

For that reason, BYD can reasonably be called Tesla’s biggest overall competitor without claiming that it sold more pure battery-electric cars. Volkswagen Group can be called the biggest legacy-automaker challenger without calling it the second-largest pure-BEV seller. Ford can be called Tesla’s clearest U.S. challenger without turning a first-half U.S. comparison into a global annual ranking.

The practical answer for car shoppers

Someone comparing a Tesla with alternatives should begin with the vehicle category rather than the manufacturer’s total sales:

  1. For a Model 3 alternative: consider the Hyundai IONIQ 6, BMW i4, Lucid Air, and relevant Volkswagen, BYD, or Mercedes-Benz models available in the buyer’s market.
  2. For a Model Y alternative: compare the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai IONIQ 5, BMW iX1 or iX, Volkswagen ID.4, Kia EV3, and GM’s electric crossovers.
  3. For a Model X alternative: look at the Kia EV9, BMW iX, Mercedes-Benz electric SUVs, Cadillac Lyriq, and Rivian R1S.
  4. For a Cybertruck alternative: the Ford F-150 Lightning, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Hummer EV, and Rivian R1T are more direct comparisons than ordinary electric sedans.
  5. For lower-cost electrification: BYD’s broader EV and plug-in-hybrid range is the most important competitive reference, subject to availability in the buyer’s country.

Availability, price, incentives, charging standards, warranty terms, and service coverage vary by country and sometimes by state or province. A model that is a strong Tesla alternative in China, Europe, or the United States may not be sold in another market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did BYD sell more electric vehicles than Tesla in 2024?

BYD reported 4,272,145 new-energy-vehicle sales, compared with Tesla’s 1,789,226 deliveries. However, BYD’s figure included plug-in hybrids as well as battery-electric vehicles. The available figures therefore show that BYD sold more new-energy vehicles, but they do not by themselves prove that BYD sold more pure BEVs than Tesla.

Who was Tesla’s biggest competitor in the United States in 2024?

Ford was the clearest established U.S. competitor because its Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, and E-Transit covered electric crossovers, pickups, and commercial vehicles. General Motors was also a major U.S. challenger through Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC EVs, while Rivian competed directly in electric pickups and SUVs at a smaller scale.

Was Volkswagen Group the second-largest pure-EV competitor to Tesla?

Not based on the reported figures used here. Volkswagen Group delivered 9,027,424 vehicles in total, including combustion-powered vehicles and hybrids. It was Tesla’s largest traditional automaker challenger by global scale and portfolio breadth, but its total deliveries should not be treated as a pure-BEV sales figure.

Why are BMW and Mercedes-Benz included if their EV sales were much lower than Tesla’s?

They compete with Tesla in valuable premium and luxury segments. BMW reported 426,536 BEV deliveries in 2024, while Mercedes-Benz remained relevant through its luxury electric cars and vans. Segment overlap, brand strength, and customer consideration can matter even when a company’s total EV volume is smaller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: BYD was Tesla’s biggest overall competitor in 2024, but its 4.27 million figure included plug-in hybrids. Volkswagen Group was the largest legacy-automaker threat by global scale and portfolio breadth. Ford was the strongest established U.S. challenger, Hyundai-Kia offered some of the broadest practical alternatives, and BMW, Mercedes-Benz, GM, Rivian, and Lucid applied pressure in premium, regional, or vehicle-specific segments. This is a competitive-relevance ranking—not a strict pure-BEV sales table.
