Tesla’s 901.2 km Single-Charge Drive: What Happened and What It Means

In June 2017, Steven Peeters and Joeri Cools reportedly drove a Tesla Model S P100D 901.2 km (about 560 miles) on one charge in Belgium. The hypermiling attempt took 23 hours and 45 minutes on a roughly 26 km loop. It was a striking historical achievement—not a current Tesla range estimate or the electric-car single-charge record today.

What happened during the 901.2 km Tesla drive?

Automobile Propre reported that Belgian drivers Steven Peeters and Joeri Cools completed the drive in a Tesla Model S P100D in June 2017. They covered 901.2 km over 23 hours and 45 minutes, repeatedly driving a loop of about 26 km. Those event details come from the contemporary report; an official record certification for the drive has not been established.

The short loop and nearly day-long duration are important context. This was a sustained attempt to maximize distance from a charge, not a routine road trip under ordinary driving conditions. Calling it a “record-breaking” drive describes its historical framing, not a current overall record.

Is 901.2 km the current electric-car record?

No. Guinness World Records currently lists a longer single-charge electric-car journey: 1,338.69 km, achieved by Miko Marczyk in Toruń, Poland, on 11–12 September 2026. Guinness’s listing is an officially listed result; the 2017 Tesla distance is reported by Automobile Propre. The figures also come from different events, and the available sources do not establish a common test protocol for a direct performance comparison.

How far can a Tesla go on one charge in everyday driving?

Tesla defines range as “the estimated distance your Tesla vehicle can travel on a single charge.” The number displayed in kilometers is based on regulatory certification data, while real-world distance varies with speed, driving style, weather, terrain, and other energy use, according to Tesla’s range guidance.

That distinction explains why the 2017 result should not be treated as a typical range figure for a Model S—or as a promise that a Tesla will cover 900 km in normal use. A sustained hypermiling attempt on a short circuit is a different situation from everyday driving, and the event report does not provide a standardized range test that can be compared directly with certification estimates.

How does the drive compare with an earlier Tesla single-charge claim?

In a separate 2009 event, Tesla reported that Roadster owner Simon Hackett and co-driver Emilis Prelgauskas completed 501 km on a single charge during Australia’s Global Green Challenge. That older Roadster claim is a different vehicle and event; it is not part of the 2017 Model S drive.
