Tesla’s US seven-seat Model Y is a Premium AWD configuration with two additional seats in the rear cargo area. Notebookcheck reported its January 2026 launch price as $2,500 more than the five-seat version; that is a dated launch figure, not a verified current quote. Tesla’s Model Y page now describes Premium as seating “up to seven” and lists a 16-inch center touchscreen. Check Tesla’s live configurator for current price, order availability and delivery timing.
What the US seven-seat Model Y adds
The US configuration described in launch coverage adds two seats behind the second row, in the rear cargo area of the standard-length Model Y. Notebookcheck reported that it was offered on Premium AWD and that the seats were intended for children. The reporting does not establish adult-level comfort, and Tesla’s current seating specification does not provide dimensions or comfort details for those seats. It is more accurate to think of the layout as occasional child seating than as a full-size third row.
This is not the Model Y L. Notebookcheck distinguished the US configuration from the longer and taller Model Y L it reported was then available to Chinese customers. The US option adds seats to the standard Model Y layout; it does not make that vehicle the longer model.
What the launch price and “free” upgrades mean
Notebookcheck reported a $2,500 launch premium for the seven-seat option over the five-seat version on Premium AWD. That figure describes the price reported at launch on January 13, 2026; it should not be treated as an October 2026 quote. Tesla’s retrieved product-page information confirms the “up to seven seats” specification but does not establish the current US option price, ordering status or delivery estimate. Verify all three in Tesla’s Model Y configurator before placing an order.

The “free” black headliner and 16-inch screen in the launch headline referred to equipment Notebookcheck said was standard on Premium at launch, rather than separately priced upgrades. It did not mean the seven-seat vehicle itself had no added cost. Tesla’s current Model Y page lists Premium with a 16-inch center touchscreen; the current configuration and price should be checked directly with Tesla.
Cabin features: what applies to which row
Tesla’s April 1, 2025 refresh announcement describes redesigned seats, powered second-row recline and an 8-inch rear touchscreen with climate controls, gaming and streaming functions. These are refresh details for the cabin and second row. The announcement does not establish that the two additional rear seats have the same amenities, so do not assume the third row gets a dedicated screen, climate controls or powered adjustment.

Tesla also said the refreshed Model Y reduced road noise by 22%, impact noise by 20% and wind noise by 20% compared with its predecessor, and delivered 5% more range with the same battery energy. Those are Tesla’s product claims, not independent test results. The company also described the new roof-glass coatings as reflecting seven times more solar energy; that, too, is a Tesla claim. These statements provide context about the refresh, not a separate test of the seven-seat configuration.
Five seats or seven: what to weigh
| Consideration | Five-seat Model Y | Seven-seat Model Y |
|---|---|---|
| Seating capacity | Five | Up to seven, according to Tesla’s current Model Y page |
| Additional rear seats | None | Two seats in the rear cargo area; launch coverage described them as child seats |
| Reported launch eligibility | Not limited to the seven-seat option’s reported eligibility | Premium AWD, according to Notebookcheck’s January 2026 launch report |
| Reported launch price difference | Baseline for the comparison | $2,500 extra over five seats, as reported at launch by Notebookcheck; current price not established |
The extra seats are most relevant if you regularly need to carry children beyond the usual five occupants and can accept that the added seats occupy the rear cargo area. If you need adult-capable third-row space or dependable cargo capacity with all seats in use, the available information does not establish that this layout will meet those needs. Compare the live configuration and inspect the vehicle in person before committing.

Helix wheels and wheel-cover alternatives
Notebookcheck reported that optional 20-inch graphite Helix wheels cost a further $2,000 at launch. That price is also dated, not a current quote. The report mentioned an Amazon “Tesla Model Y wheel cover hubcap kit” as a similar-look alternative, but it does not establish that any particular listing fits every model year, trim or wheel size. Confirm the exact wheel dimensions and listing fitment before buying. A wheel-cover kit is not equivalent to Tesla’s factory wheel package.
