Seattle-based Recurrent raised a $16 million Series A in January 2024 to expand its reports and analytics on used-electric-vehicle batteries and real-world range. The round was led by ArcTern Ventures. Recurrent’s goal is to make battery information easier to compare across used EVs; the funding announcement did not establish that its score has become an industry-wide standard.
What Recurrent does for used-EV shoppers
Recurrent launched in 2020 as a Pioneer Square Labs spinout, founded by Scott Case and Kyle Rippey. Its first product was a battery-condition report for used electric cars. The underlying consumer question is straightforward: “How much battery life is left?” But mileage alone cannot answer it, and advertised range does not necessarily show how a particular vehicle performs in real-world use.
Recurrent describes its product as vehicle-specific range and battery information derived from driver data and analytics. The aim is to help shoppers and sellers understand a used EV’s expected range and performance in context. GeekWire reported in January 2024 that Recurrent scores appeared on Edmunds and Cars.com, alongside reports available to automotive businesses.
What the $16 million Series A means
GeekWire reported on January 8, 2024, that ArcTern Ventures led Recurrent’s $16 million Series A. Automotive Ventures, Goodyear Ventures, Wireframe Ventures, Pioneer Square Labs and other investors also participated. GeekWire put Recurrent’s cumulative funding at $19 million after the round. Recurrent’s current press page gives a rounded figure of roughly $20 million in venture funding; that is the company’s presentation, not an independently reconciled financing history.

The financing was intended to help scale Recurrent’s used-EV battery reports. It is evidence of investment in the business, not proof that automakers, regulators or the used-car industry had adopted one universal battery-scoring method.
“Common currency” is an ambition, not an established standard
Case, Recurrent’s co-founder and CEO, told GeekWire: “The auto industry needs a common currency for understanding and comparing used EV batteries, like the odometer was for used combustion vehicles.” The analogy captures the company’s ambition: give buyers and sellers a more consistent way to discuss battery condition, much as an odometer supplies a familiar reference for vehicle mileage.

- Catch Battery Problems Early: Featured in two videos by Project Farm, a popular YouTube channel with millions of subscribers, the ANCEL BA101 helps you quickly spot battery issues before they leave you stranded. It provides easy-to-understand readings for State of Health (SOH), State of Charge (SOC), voltage, current, CCA, plus cranking and charging system tests, so you can better understand your battery and help avoid unexpected breakdowns
- Know the Real Condition: Don’t let inaccurate readings lead to costly surprises. Built with high-quality copper crocodile clips and a precision smart chip, this battery tester is designed to deliver dependable results. For the most accurate test, enter the correct battery type, rating value (such as CCA/Ah), and temperature exactly as shown on your battery label, so you get a clearer picture of your battery’s true condition
- Fast, Clear, Hassle-Free Testing: The classic black-and-white screen, adjustable contrast, and white backlight make results easy to read in bright sunlight or low-light conditions. One-handed operation keeps testing simple, while direct power from your vehicle’s battery means no charging and no internal batteries to deal with. Multi-language support makes it easier for more users to test with confidence
- Protection When Mistakes Happen: Built-in 4-in-1 protection helps guard against reverse polarity, short circuits, overcurrent, and overvoltage for safer testing, especially in tight spaces where clamp slips or wiring mistakes can happen. The 3x reinforced ABS housing adds extra durability and helps protect both the tester and your battery during everyday use
- Built for More 12V Batteries: Supporting global standards including JIS, EN, DIN, SAE, BCI, GB, CA, MCA, and IEC, this tester works with 12V batteries used in cars, trucks, boats, RVs, ATVs, lawnmowers, golf carts, and motorbikes over 30Ah. Compatible with Flooded, AGM, GEL, and EFB batteries. Not for lithium batteries, non-12V batteries (6V/8V/24V), or motorcycles below 30Ah. For 6V testing, choose BA101 Plus. For 24V testing, choose BA101 PRO
That goal should not be confused with an existing industry-wide standard. The available descriptions characterize Recurrent’s product as analytics and reports. They do not establish that its score is a regulated test, a physical battery inspection, a warranty determination or a universal measurement accepted across the market. A report can inform a purchase decision without replacing an inspection or the vehicle maker’s warranty terms.
How Recurrent says its business model works
Recurrent’s media brief says individual drivers receive free insights about range and vehicle performance, while dealerships and wholesale auctions pay for bulk reports. The company says shopper information can appear through dealer and vehicle-shopping sites. It also says individual vehicle data is aggregated to train its models and describes a privacy approach; those are company statements about its own data practices.

This battery load tester's rapid and precise results will enable you to decide whether your car battery needs to be replaced or jump-started making it an excellent choice for auto shops, garages, and DIY users who frequently check batteries.
GeekWire’s January 2024 coverage gives a dated view of early scale: the company then reported more than 100 paying dealerships, online sales sites and vehicle auction houses. The same coverage cited about 25,000 participating EV drivers, roughly one million miles driven daily, and research spanning 65 makes and models. These figures describe the company as reported at that time, not current totals.
What the company has reported since the funding announcement
In a January 2026 retrospective, Recurrent said its five-year dataset covered more than 50,000 vehicles and over one billion miles of real-world driving and charging data. That is a company-reported cumulative milestone, not an independently audited figure in the cited sources. It is also a different kind of metric from GeekWire’s 2024 account, which described daily driving data and coverage across 65 makes and models; the figures should not be treated as one continuous series.

For readers asking “How much is my EV worth?”, Recurrent’s information may help make battery performance more legible in a shopping or selling context. It does not, by itself, establish a vehicle’s sale price or guarantee the performance of a particular battery.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a buyer should take from Recurrent’s reports
Recurrent’s stated value is translating vehicle and driver data into information that can help people evaluate used-EV range and battery performance. When considering any battery report, buyers should understand what it measures, how the information was gathered, and whether it reflects a long-term data history or a one-time assessment. Recurrent’s cited descriptions support its range-and-data analytics model, but do not provide a direct comparative evaluation against other named assessment services.

- Use a report as one input alongside the vehicle’s service history, a test drive and an independent inspection when appropriate.
- Ask what the reported score or range represents for that specific vehicle; do not assume it is a physical diagnosis of every battery fault.
- Check who receives the information and how the provider says it handles vehicle data.
- Review the automaker’s battery-warranty terms separately; a third-party score is not a warranty decision.
