Tesla’s worldwide deliveries fell in 2025, but “sales are plummeting” no longer describes its latest reported results: deliveries rose year over year in both the first and second quarters of 2026. That is a two-quarter improvement, not proof of a recovery everywhere. Tesla had not reported Q3 2026 figures as of October 4, 2026.
What happened to Tesla sales?
Tesla delivered 1,636,129 vehicles in 2025, a 9% decline from 2024, according to the Associated Press. That annual drop is the basis for the gloomy headline. The next two reported quarters moved in the opposite direction: Tesla deliveries rose 6% year over year in Q1 2026 and 25% in Q2.
These figures are deliveries, not a complete measure of retail registrations, revenue, or market share. Tesla cautions that deliveries alone should not be treated as an indicator of quarterly financial results; selling prices, costs, foreign exchange and other factors also matter.
Did Tesla sales recover in 2026?
Deliveries increased in both reported quarters, but the figures establish only a year-over-year rise in global deliveries for those periods—not a recovery in every market or in profitability.

The Q2 gain followed the Q1 increase, but Tesla did not provide country-level Q2 deliveries in the cited release. The global result therefore cannot show whether deliveries rose in any particular country. Q3 figures were not available by October 4, 2026.
Why did Tesla’s sales and revenue fall in 2025?
What Tesla reported
In its 2025 Form 10-K, Tesla said automotive sales revenue decreased by $6.66 billion, or 9%, year over year. The company attributed that decline to approximately 8% fewer cash deliveries and a lower average selling price, which it linked to sales mix and higher customer incentives, including attractive financing. These are Tesla’s stated financial drivers; they do not by themselves explain all changes in customer demand.

Tesla also reported that automotive regulatory-credit revenue fell by $770 million, or 28%, in 2025 following regulatory actions and other changes. Credit revenue is a separate factor from vehicle deliveries and selling prices.
What outside reporting highlighted
The Associated Press described the 2025 decline as unfolding amid a customer backlash over CEO Elon Musk’s politics, expiring U.S. tax breaks and stronger overseas competition. Those are reported contextual factors, not a quantified breakdown of how much each contributed. Tesla itself characterizes the worldwide vehicle market as highly competitive, with both established manufacturers and new entrants selling electric vehicles.

How did Tesla compare with BYD?
BYD overtook Tesla in annual EV volume in 2025, but the commonly cited figures are not identical measures. A CnEVPost compilation of company reports records 2,256,714 BYD battery-electric vehicle sales and 1,636,129 Tesla deliveries. The Associated Press likewise reported that BYD sold 2.26 million vehicles and became the leading EV maker by annual volume.
Read the comparison as an indication of relative scale, not as a perfectly matched tally: BYD’s figure is BEV sales, while Tesla’s is deliveries. Comparing different periods, vehicle categories, geographies or measures such as registrations and revenue can produce misleading conclusions.

What does the European data say?
The International Energy Agency’s 2026 manufacturing-and-trade analysis tracks the brand mix of electric cars imported into the EU from China. Chinese brands’ share of those imports rose from 50% in 2023 to more than 70% in 2025; Tesla’s share of Chinese-made electric cars in that import flow fell from 30% to 10% over the same period. These are import-origin and brand-mix figures, not Tesla’s total European market share.
The same analysis says EU electric-car production increased 30% in 2025 to nearly 3.2 million vehicles. That points to a broader and changing supply landscape, but it should not be combined with Tesla delivery totals or treated as a direct measure of the company’s regional sales.

How to read the next Tesla sales update
For a useful comparison, check four things before drawing a conclusion: the time period, the metric, the geography and the vehicle category. A global quarterly delivery increase, for example, does not establish that registrations or market share increased in Europe, China or North America.
Tesla’s Q2 2026 release puts the limitation directly: “Tesla vehicle deliveries and storage deployments represent only two measures of the Company’s financial performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results.” A delivery rebound is relevant, but it is not a substitute for financial results or a regional breakdown.
