Tesla’s European sales collapse was real, brand-specific and unusually severe—but the available data cannot assign all of it to Elon Musk’s politics. Tesla registrations fell while battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales across the European Union rose. The most defensible explanation combines reputational backlash around Musk, an aging and temporarily narrow lineup during the Model Y changeover, and stronger competition from European and Chinese manufacturers.
How far did Tesla sales fall?
The decline began in early 2025 and was visible across several major markets. ACEA data reported by The Guardian show that Tesla registrations in the EU, United Kingdom and EFTA countries fell from 14,228 in April 2024 to 7,261 in April 2025—a 49% year-over-year drop.

The full-year figures are ACEA-based totals reported by CnEVPost. “Europe” is a wider regional measure than the EU-only figure, so those rows should not be treated as interchangeable.

Was the European EV market itself collapsing?
No. The market backdrop moved in the opposite direction. EU BEV sales increased 27.8% year over year in April 2025, even as Tesla’s registrations in the EU, UK and EFTA fell 49%.
For the first half of 2025, ACEA recorded 869,271 new BEVs in the EU, giving them a 15.6% share of new-car registrations. Total EU car registrations were down 1.9% in that period, but electric sales grew. That general softness in the car market therefore cannot explain the scale of Tesla’s decline by itself.

The market strengthened further in the first half of 2026. ACEA reported 1,220,890 new EU BEVs and a 20.7% BEV share, up from 15.6% a year earlier; total EU registrations were up 5.7% year to date. These figures rule out the idea that Europeans broadly stopped buying electric cars.

The timing and the divergence from the wider BEV market are consistent with a reputational effect. Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, told The Guardian that the numbers “suggests the brand damage caused by Elon Musk’s political interventions may be lasting.”
Musk offered a different interpretation at the Qatar Economic Forum, saying Europe was Tesla’s weakest market and that the company had “lost some sales paths on the [political] left” while gaining them “on the right.” That is his characterization of the shift, not an independent estimate of the political effect.

No cited source provides a controlled percentage of lost Tesla sales caused by Musk’s political activity. The evidence supports calling politics a plausible contributor, not calculating a precise “Musk effect.”

The Model Y transition disrupted supply and choice
Tesla was changing over to the refreshed Model Y, its highest-volume model in many European markets. Reporting described buyer reception during the transition as lukewarm. A product changeover can temporarily reduce available configurations, delay purchases and make an outgoing model less attractive, even without a change in brand sentiment.

Tesla’s lineup was narrow and aging
Tesla offered fewer body styles and powertrain choices than many established rivals. Analysts also pointed to the absence of a hybrid model at a time when some European buyers remained unwilling to switch fully to battery power. Buyers considering an electric car could choose among more brands and formats, while Tesla depended heavily on a small number of models.
BYD and other manufacturers expanded the alternatives
Competition intensified from Chinese brands such as BYD and from European, Japanese and Korean manufacturers. BYD’s 2025 European registrations reached 187,657, up 268.6% from the previous year, while Tesla’s European registrations fell 26.9%. BYD did not need to take every lost Tesla sale for the competitive pressure to matter: more available models give fleet managers and private buyers additional reasons to compare beyond Tesla.
How should the competing explanations be weighed?

What is the fairest conclusion?
Europe did not abandon electric vehicles; it became a more competitive BEV market in which Tesla underperformed. Musk’s political activity likely increased reputational resistance among some buyers, especially because Tesla’s identity is closely tied to its CEO. But the sales data alone cannot show that politics caused the entire collapse.
The 2025 result is better understood as a combination of brand damage, a disruptive Model Y refresh, a limited product range and fast-rising competition. The first-half 2026 market figures confirm that European EV demand continued recovering. Tesla-specific European results after that period are not established by the cited data and would be needed to judge whether the brand decline was permanent.
