Authorities described two separate Tesla arson incidents in March 2025: five vehicles were damaged or destroyed at a Las Vegas collision business on March 18, and a fire at the Kansas City Tesla Center the night before spread between two Cybertrucks. Kansas City had also seen a distinct fire-and-gunfire incident at the same Tesla Center in February. The cases have different defendants and legal statuses.
What happened to the Teslas in Las Vegas and Kansas City?
The March incidents occurred at different sites and on consecutive dates. The U.S. Department of Justice’s accounts describe incendiary devices and gunfire—not spontaneous vehicle fires. Investigative details below are allegations or statements attributed to authorities, not independent findings about the cases.
| Incident | Date and site | Damage and reported method | Legal status in the cited DOJ account |
|---|---|---|---|
| Las Vegas | March 18, 2025; a Tesla collision business | Five Tesla vehicles were damaged or destroyed. DOJ described Molotov cocktails, a .30-caliber AR-style firearm and “Resist” graffiti in its account of the investigation. | Paul Hyon Kim was charged by complaint. The sources cited here do not establish a later disposition. |
| Kansas City, March | Late March 17, 2025; the Kansas City Tesla Center | DOJ said fire spread from a gray Cybertruck to a second Cybertruck and damaged two charging stations. The complaint-based account listed sale prices of $105,485 and $107,485 for the trucks and about $550 for each charging station; those figures are not general market valuations. | Owen McIntire was charged by complaint. The cited DOJ account does not establish a later disposition. |
| Kansas City, February | February 13, 2025; the Kansas City Tesla Center | DOJ described fire and gunshot damage to a Cybertruck, bullet holes in a Model Y, and apparent ricochet damage to another Cybertruck. Its September 2026 account listed an $81,985 sale price for the fire-damaged Cybertruck. | Kevin Harkins pleaded guilty on September 25, 2026. DOJ said sentencing would be scheduled after a presentence investigation. |

How many Tesla vehicles were damaged?
DOJ reported five vehicles damaged or destroyed in Las Vegas and two Cybertrucks involved in the March Kansas City fire. Its February Kansas City account describes three vehicles with different kinds of damage: a fire- and gunshot-damaged Cybertruck, a Model Y with bullet holes and another Cybertruck with apparent ricochet damage. These are separate incidents and damage categories, so adding them into one unqualified total would obscure what each report actually counted.

Were the fires arson?
Authorities described the March events as deliberate arson attacks. In the Las Vegas case, DOJ said investigators described Molotov cocktails and firearm use at the collision business. In the March Kansas City case, the department said fire spread between two Cybertrucks and cited evidence including Molotov cocktails. Acting ATF Director Dan Driscoll said on April 18, 2025, in the Kansas City case: “ATF’s Special Agents and forensic experts recovered and analyzed key evidence—including Molotov cocktails—used in this deliberate and dangerous arson attack.”
The criminal complaints are allegations, not convictions. DOJ’s Las Vegas notice states: “A complaint is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.” That presumption applies to defendants charged by complaint in the March cases.

Were the Kansas City fires the same incident?
No. The February 13, 2025, case and the March 17, 2025, fire occurred at the same Tesla Center but on different dates and involved separate defendants. The September 2026 guilty plea by Kevin Harkins belongs to the February case; it does not establish the outcome of Owen McIntire’s separate March complaint.

In a public service announcement dated March 21, 2025, the FBI said incidents involving Tesla vehicles or dealerships had occurred in at least nine states since January 2025. That is the figure reported in that dated alert, not a current cumulative total. The FBI said known incidents had occurred at night and appeared to involve lone offenders; those were the agency’s observations at the time, not findings about every case or proof of a motive in the Las Vegas and Kansas City incidents. The alert also characterized graffiti in some incidents as expressing grievances against people perceived by perpetrators as racists, fascists or political opponents.
