Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive estimate that Tesla sold 589,160 vehicles in the United States in 2025, down 7.0% from 2024. The picture was not uniformly negative: Tesla’s estimated U.S. sales rose 7.5% year over year in Q3 2025, even as its share of the expanding U.S. electric-vehicle market fell. The latest verified U.S.-specific estimates available here cover 2025; Tesla’s later quarterly delivery releases report global totals, not U.S. sales.
How many Teslas were sold in the U.S. in 2025?
Kelley Blue Book (KBB), part of Cox Automotive, estimated 589,160 Tesla sales in the United States for calendar 2025, a 7.0% decrease from 2024. Its Q4 2025 report estimated 138,000 Tesla sales in the U.S. during that final quarter. These are third-party estimates, not a U.S.-only unit tally reported by Tesla. See the KBB/Cox Automotive Q4 2025 EV sales report.
Are Tesla sales going up or down?
It depends on the period. Tesla’s estimated U.S. sales declined for the full year 2025, while its Q3 2025 volume was higher than in Q3 2024. Comparing like periods avoids treating a single quarter as a reversal of the annual direction.
| Period | Estimated U.S. Tesla sales | Year-over-year change | Source and basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 full year | 589,160 | Down 7.0% | Kelley Blue Book/Cox Automotive estimate; Q4 2025 report |
| 2025 Q3 | 179,525 | Up 7.5% | Kelley Blue Book/Cox Automotive estimate; Q3 2025 report |
| 2025 Q4 | 138,000 | Not stated in the cited report summary | Kelley Blue Book/Cox Automotive estimate; Q4 2025 report |
The quarter and full-year figures answer different questions: Q3 provides a same-quarter comparison, while the annual total captures the direction across all four quarters. Neither by itself establishes what happened in 2026.

What was Tesla’s share of U.S. EV sales?
Tesla represented an estimated 41.0% of U.S. EV sales in Q3 2025, compared with 43.2% in Q3 2024, according to the matched-quarter values in KBB/Cox Automotive’s report. That is a 2.2 percentage-point decline. Share can decrease even when a company sells more vehicles if the overall market grows faster.
The same report estimated 437,599 U.S. EV sales in Q3 2025, equal to 10.5% of total vehicle sales. Cox described the quarter as unusually strong in the run-up to the scheduled expiration of federal EV incentives, with buyers bringing some purchases forward. That market-wide timing helps explain why Q3 is a poor basis for assuming a normal quarterly pace; it does not establish that incentives caused Tesla’s specific sales movement. See the KBB/Cox Automotive Q3 2025 EV sales report and Cox Automotive’s Q3 2025 commentary.

Cox’s estimates also placed the Model Y above 114,000 U.S. sales and the Model 3 above 53,000 in Q3 2025. Those are estimated model totals, not Tesla-reported figures, and the commentary characterized the lineup as centered on those two high-volume models alongside three more niche vehicles.
Why did Tesla sales fall in 2025?
The cited figures establish the decline, but they do not isolate one cause for Tesla’s U.S. unit sales. Price, incentives, product mix, competition and purchase timing can matter to demand, yet the available company and market reporting does not quantify each factor’s contribution to the U.S. result.

Tesla’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K said automotive sales revenue fell $6.66 billion, or 9%, compared with 2024. The company attributed the revenue decrease in part to an 8% decline in cash deliveries and lower average selling price, driven by vehicle mix and customer incentives. Those are company-level financial explanations, not a causal analysis of U.S. sales units: revenue is not unit volume, and global/company-wide explanations should not be presented as proof of why U.S. demand changed. Tesla’s reported delivery totals are global. For example, Tesla reported more than 480,000 vehicle deliveries worldwide in Q2 2026; that number cannot be treated as U.S. sales or allocated to the U.S. without a separate, credible geographic estimate. KBB/Cox estimates of U.S. sales and Tesla’s global delivery disclosures have different geographic and reporting bases.

Tesla also cautions against treating deliveries as a financial-performance result: “Tesla vehicle deliveries and storage deployments represent only two measures of the Company’s financial performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results,” which also depend on factors such as average selling price, costs and foreign exchange. The statement appeared in the company’s Q2 2026 production and delivery release.
What the latest data can—and cannot—show
As of October 8, 2026, the newest verified U.S.-specific Tesla estimates in the cited sources cover 2025, not Q3 2026. Tesla had scheduled its Q3 2026 financial results for October 21, 2026, after that date; the company’s global delivery figure would not in any case establish U.S. sales. The SEC-filed notice of Tesla’s Q3 2026 results schedule confirms the scheduled date.
Quick Recap
- Annual direction: KBB/Cox estimated U.S. Tesla sales fell 7.0% in 2025.
- Quarterly movement: estimated Q3 2025 sales rose 7.5% year over year, during a record-strength U.S. EV quarter.
- Competitive position: Tesla’s matched-quarter EV share slipped from 43.2% to 41.0% as the market expanded.
- Evidence boundary: the cited sources do not establish a U.S.-specific Tesla sales trend for 2026.
