The application describes a wing that stows within the vehicle’s body profile and deploys into the airflow, but it does not name the Roadster or confirm that the design will reach production.
What Tesla’s spoiler patent describes
US 2026/0285418 A1, titled “Deployable and Active Rear Wing Assembly with Safety Features,” is a Tesla application published September 24, 2026. Its drawings and description show a multi-element rear wing: a main element paired with a smaller leading-edge slat. In the stowed position, the assembly nests into the vehicle’s body profile; when deployed, it extends into the airflow and can move to change its aerodynamic effect. Read the published patent record.
Electrek reports that Tesla filed the application on August 8, 2025, as a continuation of an earlier application, and identifies David Lemire and James Michael Arthur Crook as inventors. Those filing details are reported by Electrek; they should not be mistaken for evidence that the illustrated mechanism has been fitted to a car. Electrek’s report says the application claims up to 700 kg of downforce. That is a figure attributed to the patent claim, not an independently measured Roadster result or a confirmed production specification.
Does the patent show the new Roadster?
It may offer a clue, but it is not a confirmed Roadster reveal. The illustrated vehicle has sports-coupe proportions, and automotive coverage has compared it with Tesla’s second-generation Roadster concept. Car and Driver likewise treats the connection as an inference from the drawings, not an identification made by Tesla. Car and Driver’s coverage notes that the application does not name the Roadster.

Patent illustrations can show an example vehicle or mechanism without establishing its final shape, equipment, or production status. The drawings therefore support saying the car could be Roadster-related; they do not prove that they depict a production-intent Roadster.
What the drawings do—and do not—establish
- They show: a proposed rear wing assembly with a main element and smaller leading-edge slat, illustrated in stowed and deployed positions.
- They suggest: Tesla is exploring a way for the wing to sit within the body profile when not in use and extend into the airflow when deployed.
- They do not establish: that Tesla has built or tested this mechanism on a Roadster, selected it for production, or confirmed any Roadster performance figure.
The distinction matters for the reported downforce number, too: up to 700 kg is a claim in Tesla application US 2026/0285418 A1 as reported by Electrek in 2026, not a measured result from a finished vehicle.

Will the next Roadster have an active rear wing?
The application alone cannot answer that. It documents a proposed design, while the cited coverage does not establish that Tesla has adopted it for a production Roadster. Nor does the patent provide a confirmed list of Roadster wing options to compare.
Coverage had listed a Roadster event for October 1, 2026, but the available reporting does not verify what was shown there. A scheduled event is not evidence that Tesla unveiled this wing or confirmed production equipment.

Why the patent is still worth watching
The drawings make the Roadster connection plausible enough to attract attention, and the mechanism offers a concrete look at one possible active-aero approach: conceal the wing in the body when stowed, then expose it to the airflow when deployed. What remains unknown is whether the illustrated car is the Roadster, whether the design has been tested on one, and whether it will appear on a production vehicle.
