Tesla has been encouraging suppliers and automakers to build around parts of its 48-volt low-voltage approach. But the headline does not mean rivals received a complete, plug-and-play electrical system, free components, or a no-cost conversion recipe.
The clearest public move is Tesla’s Low-Voltage Connector Standard (LVCS), announced on October 27, 2024. Tesla says the initiative uses six connector types to cover more than 90% of typical electrical-device applications and is intended to simplify vehicle connectivity. It expands on the 48-volt architecture used in the Cybertruck.

What Tesla actually shared
Several different ideas are often compressed into the phrase “Tesla shared its 48-volt technology.” They are not the same thing.
1. A low-voltage electrical architecture
Moving selected vehicle loads from roughly 12 volts to approximately 48 volts affects much more than the battery. It can involve power distribution, voltage conversion, fuses, grounding, connectors, control electronics, diagnostics, software and component protection.

Tesla’s public service documentation identifies the Cybertruck as using a 48-volt “mid-voltage” architecture. That does not establish that every Tesla model uses the same system.
2. The LVCS connector initiative
In its 2024 announcement, Tesla invited suppliers and vehicle manufacturers to participate in LVCS. Tesla says the standard reduces the number of connector types needed for common electrical devices to six, covering more than 90% of typical applications.
A connector standard can make components easier to design and source, but it is not automatically a complete electrical standard. Interchangeability also depends on voltage ranges, pin assignments, current ratings, sealing, communications, software, diagnostics and safety validation.

A December 2023 Electrek report said Tesla had shared implementation documentation with major automakers, including Ford, to encourage suppliers to develop compatible parts.
The precise contents and distribution of those documents are not independently verifiable from Tesla’s public website in the available sources. The evidence supports describing this as reported private documentation-sharing—not as a confirmed public, downloadable release of Tesla’s entire electrical design.
4. Tesla’s patent pledge
Tesla’s broader patent policy says the company will not initiate patent litigation over qualifying electric-vehicle-related patent use when a party acts in good faith. That is a pledge against certain lawsuits, not a transfer of every design, trade secret, software system, supplier contract, manufacturing process or validation document.

Why 48 volts helps
The basic physics is straightforward:
P = V × I: electrical power equals voltage multiplied by current.- For the same power, a 48-volt circuit requires one-quarter the current of a 12-volt circuit.
- Resistive cable heating is approximately proportional to
I2R, so reducing current can sharply reduce cable losses when resistance is otherwise unchanged.
For example, a 1,200-watt load requires about 100 amps at 12 volts, but about 25 amps at 48 volts. That can allow smaller conductors or lower heat generation in appropriately designed circuits.

Tesla’s filings describe four-times-lower current and 16-times-lower heat generation for the same power compared with a typical automotive-voltage system. Those figures describe the relationship between voltage, current and resistive heating—not whole-vehicle test results. Tesla’s 2025 filing also links the architecture to lower harness mass and simpler electrical systems.
Why modern cars need more low-voltage power
Vehicle electrical loads have grown well beyond traditional lamps, radios and starter systems. Today’s cars may need substantial power for:
- electric steering and braking actuators;
- powered seats, windows, doors and tailgates;
- pumps, fans, compressors and thermal-management hardware;
- cameras, sensors, displays and computing systems;
- steer-by-wire and rear-wheel-steering systems; and
- zonal, software-defined electrical architectures.
Higher voltage can make it easier to distribute that power without adding large amounts of copper. It may also make high-power actuators more practical to package and help reduce harness complexity. However, those benefits come from the wider electrical architecture, not from voltage alone. Tesla separately describes the Cybertruck’s steer-by-wire system as using redundant controllers and motors; that redundancy is not created simply by changing 12 volts to 48 volts.
Why the industry stayed with 12 volts
There is nothing mysterious about the continued use of 12 volts. The automotive industry has spent decades building a huge ecosystem around it: batteries, motors, relays, fuses, lamps, sensors, connectors, test equipment, production tooling, repair procedures and technician knowledge.
Automakers cannot just replace a 12-volt battery with a 48-volt battery. Existing components may need redesigned motors or electronic controllers, different fuses, new protection strategies, revised connectors and updated diagnostics. Some legacy electronics will still need 5- or 12-volt rails, which means a 48-to-12-volt converter may remain part of the vehicle.

The central economic problem is scale. The 2023 reporting on Tesla’s initiative identified the supplier ecosystem as the adoption challenge: 48-volt components can initially cost more than mature 12-volt equivalents if production volumes are low. A common specification only becomes economically powerful if enough automakers adopt it to justify supplier investment.
What “for free” really means
The headline should be read as shorthand for reducing barriers to adoption—not as a promise that competitors receive a finished system at zero cost.
Rivals still have to:
- engineer their own vehicle architecture and harnesses;
- source or develop compatible components;
- pay for tooling and production changes;
- perform reliability, functional-safety and cybersecurity validation;
- certify the vehicle and its systems;
- create diagnostic procedures and service training; and
- manage converters and compatibility with existing electronics.
Tesla is not necessarily supplying rivals’ parts, waiving every intellectual-property restriction or handing over all of its integration know-how. “Open source” is therefore an imprecise description unless referring to a specific publicly licensed specification or software project.

Why would Tesla help competitors?
The strongest explanation is ecosystem-building. Tesla cannot manufacture every connector, actuator, converter, fuse, harness and control module itself. If suppliers develop compatible 48-volt products for several automakers, production volumes can rise and prices may fall—including for Tesla.
A common approach could also speed up supplier development. Instead of each automaker creating an isolated specification, manufacturers could work from a shared set of requirements and build a larger market for compatible parts.
There is a network-effect precedent in Tesla’s charging strategy. In November 2022, Tesla opened its North American Charging System design, which later became associated with SAE J3400 standardization. LVCS is not the same as NACS and has not been shown to have equivalent adoption, but the strategic logic is similar: an interface can become more valuable when many companies use it.

Tesla may also believe its competitive advantage lies more in vehicle integration, software, manufacturing and speed of iteration than in keeping every connector design exclusive. Sharing technical foundations can advertise Tesla’s engineering direction and pressure traditional automakers to respond. That is a reasonable strategic interpretation, not a motive Tesla has explicitly confirmed.
What competitors can—and cannot—do
A rival could use the available specifications as a starting point for developing 48-volt hardware. It cannot assume that a Tesla component will drop directly into its vehicle.
Even two vehicles using 48 volts may differ in connector pinouts, voltage tolerances, communication protocols, current limits, grounding, redundancy, software and diagnostic behavior. A standard can reduce needless variation without making every part universally interchangeable.
The distinction matters especially for safety-critical systems. Steering, braking and other actuators require carefully engineered failure modes, redundancy and validation. The existence of an open connector or architecture document does not remove those obligations.

Service and safety
Although 48 volts remains below the high-voltage traction systems used in electric vehicles, it is not interchangeable with ordinary 12-volt service. Tesla warns that Cybertruck mid-voltage components require additional knowledge and care, and that service personnel may need applicable training. Risk depends on system design, current, stored energy, protection and procedure; 48 volts is neither automatically dangerous nor automatically safe.

Model-specific documentation is essential. Tesla’s April 17, 2025 service bulletin for certain 2024-and-newer Model 3 and 2025-and-newer Model Y vehicles specifies a nominal low-voltage accessory circuit of up to 16 volts DC. That is a practical warning against assuming that every Tesla has the Cybertruck’s 48-volt system. Check Tesla’s applicable service documentation before modifying a vehicle.
Transition costs
Migration affects electrical centers, harnesses, software, diagnostics, production processes, testing and repair procedures. It can also create a period in which both 12-volt and 48-volt component ecosystems must be supported.
Fragmentation
Even if many automakers adopt 48 volts, they may implement different connector families, communication systems and safety requirements. “48 volts” alone does not guarantee cross-brand interoperability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat this means for vehicle owners
Owners should not assume that:
- a 48-volt battery can replace a 12-volt battery;
- an existing 12-volt accessory is safe on a 48-volt circuit;
- all Tesla models use the Cybertruck’s electrical architecture;
- third-party modifications are supported; or
- service procedures are interchangeable between Tesla models.
Use the exact model, production period and circuit documentation for any accessory or repair. Tesla’s service bulletin specifically addresses low-voltage accessory limits and third-party modifications; it is not a general permission to experiment with vehicle wiring.
How to judge whether Tesla’s initiative succeeds
The important test is not whether Tesla published an invitation. It is whether the market responds.
- Supplier adoption: Are major suppliers producing compatible actuators, converters, fuses, connectors and control modules?
- Automaker adoption: Do rival production vehicles use comparable architectures?
- Interoperability: Do the standards work across brands, or only reduce Tesla’s own connector variety?
- Cost: Do initial 48-volt component premiums fall as volume increases?
- Service readiness: Can independent repairers and emergency responders work safely on the systems?
- Reliability: Do connectors, converters and actuators last for the vehicle’s service life?
- Consumer benefit: Does the change deliver lower weight, better packaging, lower repair costs, greater range or useful new functions?
48 volts is not 800 volts
Tesla’s low-voltage architecture should not be confused with an EV’s high-voltage propulsion system. The 48-volt system primarily serves vehicle electronics and actuators. An 800-volt system concerns high-power battery propulsion and charging. A vehicle can use both, because they solve different electrical problems.
