Tesla settled the wrongful-death lawsuit brought by Walter Huang’s family on April 8, 2024, one day before the case was scheduled to go to trial. The settlement amount and terms were not disclosed in contemporaneous reporting, and the agreement left no jury verdict on Tesla’s liability.
What happened in Walter Huang’s crash
Walter Huang, a 38-year-old Apple engineer and father of two, died on March 23, 2018, when his Tesla Model X struck a concrete highway barrier near Mountain View, California. The crash occurred at the U.S. 101 and State Route 85 interchange while Autopilot was engaged, according to contemporaneous reporting. That account also reported Huang was using a phone; that detail should not be treated as a court finding about fault.
Huang’s family sued Tesla in 2019, alleging negligence and wrongful death, including that Tesla overstated Autopilot’s capabilities. Tesla’s reported defense was that it warns drivers to remain alert and responsible for driving while Autopilot is active. Those were opposing positions in the lawsuit, not findings reached at trial. Why the case settled before trial
The parties settled on April 8, 2024, on the eve of the trial scheduled to begin the next day. A court filing seeking privacy quoted Tesla’s stated reason for settling as to “end years of litigation,” according to the Associated Press. The amount and other terms were not made public in the reporting. A settlement resolves the parties’ lawsuit; it is not, by itself, an admission of liability.

The planned jury proceeding therefore did not decide whether Tesla was legally responsible for Huang’s death. The case ended without a jury verdict on liability. (Associated Press; Reuters)
What the NTSB found—and what it did not decide
The National Transportation Safety Board investigated the crash as a transportation-safety matter. Reporting on its findings described multiple contributing factors: Huang’s distraction, limits in Tesla’s Autopilot design and operation, and California’s failure to replace a damaged crash attenuator. These findings offer safety context, but they are not a civil court’s determination of negligence in the lawsuit that settled.

Then-NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said the crash demonstrated the limitations of consumer advanced driver-assistance systems, adding that “There is not a vehicle currently available to US consumers that is self-driving. Period.” He emphasized that drivers must remain actively engaged even when such systems are on. (NTSB)

Huang’s family also pursued a separate claim involving the State of California over highway markings and the damaged crash barrier. A 2024 report said it was unclear how Tesla’s settlement would affect that separate case; the sources cited here do not establish its later outcome. It should not be confused with the settled Tesla lawsuit.

The Huang case attracted attention because it was a high-profile Autopilot wrongful-death suit set for trial. Georgetown Law autonomous-vehicle law instructor Ed Walters said he was surprised by the settlement and considered the crash facts “favorable” for Tesla. He also observed, “You could win in court, but lose in the trial of public opinion.” Those were Walters’ assessments, not established explanations for Tesla’s decision.
Separately, a 2024 Washington Post analysis of NHTSA data said Autopilot had been linked to more than 700 crashes since 2019 and at least 19 fatalities. That is a dated, attributed analysis—not a current count—and “linked” does not establish that Autopilot caused each crash. (The Washington Post)
