Tesla Says Semi Megachargers Can Deliver Up to 1.2 MW

Tesla advertises up to 1.2 MW Megacharging for the Semi, but that is a maximum company specification—not an independently verified session or a guaranteed rate.

Tesla says its Megacharger can deliver up to 1.2 megawatts (MW) to a Semi and charge the truck to 60% in 30 minutes. Those are manufacturer claims, not evidence that a Semi has been independently documented charging at 1.2 MW. The rate is a maximum capability: battery state and temperature, plus whether another truck is charging at the same site, can affect actual speed.

What Tesla’s 1.2 MW figure means

Tesla Support describes Megacharger as capable of providing up to 1.2 MW, and says it can charge a Semi battery to up to 60% in 30 minutes. Tesla does not publish an independently measured session showing that a truck reached or sustained 1.2 MW, so the figure should be read as a company-stated peak capability—not a verified record or a rate guaranteed for every stop. Tesla’s Semi charging guidance says charging speed depends on battery level and temperature and on whether another truck is charging at the same Megacharger.

Tesla’s product page lists up to 500 miles of estimated range for the Semi. That is also a manufacturer estimate, not a promise of range under every load, route, weather condition, or operating pattern. Tesla’s Semi page identifies the range as estimated.

How the charger’s shared capacity affects fleets

Tesla’s UK business specification lists Megacharger cabinet output at up to 1,200 kW, shared by two posts, while listing each post at up to 1.2 MW. These ratings describe different parts of the system: a post’s maximum rating is not the same as the cabinet’s combined output when two posts draw power. The business page lists a 180–1,000 VDC cabinet output range; the post is listed for 0–1,000 VDC, up to 1,500 A continuous current, and a 3 m cable. Those are Tesla-listed specifications on a UK page; regional configurations and availability should be confirmed with Tesla. Tesla’s business charging specifications also list MCS 3.2, ISO 15118-2, and OCPI capability for the product.

  • Seamless Integration: Designed exclusively for Tesla Model S/X, this wireless charger fits perfectly into your vehicle's aesthetics, offering a sleek and integrated look.
  • MagSafe Compatibility: Featuring MagSafe technology, the charger ensures a strong, secure connection to your phone, providing convenience and ease of use.
  • Universal Qi Charging: Compatible with all Qi-enabled smartphones including iPhone and Android devices.

  • Easy Installation: Set up is straightforward and hassle-free, allowing you to start using the charger right out of the box. No tools required – installs in under 2 minutes

The distinction matters when planning simultaneous truck charging. A fleet cannot infer that two trucks will each receive 1.2 MW at once from the post rating when Tesla lists the cabinet’s total output as shared. The truck’s actual charging rate can also be lower than the charger’s rating because of vehicle and site conditions.

Megacharger and Basecharger serve different use cases

Product Tesla-listed maximum output What the rating indicates
Megacharger Up to 1.2 MW per post; cabinet up to 1,200 kW shared by two posts High-power charging for Semi operations where short stops and route charging matter.
Basecharger Up to 120 kW A lower-power business charging option, more suited to longer dwell times than a rapid route stop.

Tesla’s UK business listing specifies Basecharger at up to 150 A continuous current, 180–1,000 VDC, and a 6 m cable. These are charger ratings, not a guarantee of the rate any truck will receive. Tesla lists MCS 3.2 for its Megacharger and Basecharger products; that should be understood as Tesla’s product specification, not a broader statement about every charging network or truck. The Tesla business page provides the listed product details.

  • 12V AUX INCLUDED: Includes the required 12V AUX power adapter in the box, so both charging pucks get the power they need without extra parts, guesswork, or hunting for a compatible adapter.

How Semi drivers find and use a Megacharger

Tesla says Semi drivers can find stations on the truck’s touchscreen or in the Tesla app. When a driver inserts the Megacharger handle, charging starts automatically; payment is handled by the fleet manager through Tesla for Business. Site hours and stall availability can vary, and reservations are not supported. Check current site information before routing a truck. Tesla’s support page describes the charging process and access guidance.

The Semi is not compatible with passenger-vehicle Superchargers or Wall Connectors, according to Tesla. Tesla also says Megacharger sites currently support Tesla Semi trucks only, so a passenger charger or an unspecified adapter is not an alternative. Tesla’s charging FAQ covers these compatibility limits.

Why a peak rating does not settle fleet deployment

A 1.2 MW post rating alone does not show whether a depot or route can supply that power reliably. Tesla’s California Energy Commission filing discusses utility capacity, grid upgrades, permitting, and project schedules as factors affecting high-power truck charging sites. In that 2024 filing, Tesla reported 300- and 500-mile Semi versions and energy use of less than 2 kWh per mile; these are Tesla-submitted figures, not independent test results. Tesla’s 2024 comments filed with the California Energy Commission provide that context.

For a fleet, practical planning therefore needs to account for truck-to-charger compatibility, cabinet sharing, route and stop duration, site power, utility connection timing, and access to operating sites—not just the highest number on a charger specification. The available Tesla materials do not establish a full independent lifecycle-cost comparison between charging options.

Network plans are not proof that sites are open

Tesla’s Q4 2025 investor deck shows planned Semi Megacharger network sites for 2026 and says Semi production was beginning in 2026. These are company plans, not confirmation that every marked location is open or that production has reached any particular volume. Drivers should use current site information on the Semi touchscreen or Tesla app rather than treating a planning map as a live availability list. Tesla’s Q4 2025 investor deck identifies the network sites as planned.

Charging limits and day-to-day guidance

Tesla recommends charging to a limit set by the fleet and says charging slows above 90%. That guidance is separate from the headline 30-minute figure: the latter is an “up to 60%” claim, while the rate can vary with battery conditions and shared site use. Fleet operators should use Tesla’s current vehicle and site guidance for their route and operating needs. Tesla’s Semi support page covers charging limits and rate variation.
