Tesla removed Steam gaming capability from newly delivered Model S and Model X vehicles in May 2024, according to customer notices reported at the time. That change does not establish that Steam stopped working in every older Model S or Model X: eligibility depended on the vehicle’s hardware and configuration. Tesla has not publicly explained the decision in the reports available.
What changed with Tesla Steam support?
Tesla introduced a native Steam Beta app for qualifying refreshed Model S and Model X vehicles in late 2022, as Electrek reported. In May 2024, Electrek reported that new Model S and Model X buyers were being told their vehicles would not be capable of playing Steam games after an update to the gaming computer.
The customer notice quoted by Electrek said: “Tesla is updating the gaming computer in your Model X and your vehicle is no longer capable of playing Steam games.” The notice describes the change for affected new vehicles; it does not by itself confirm the status of Steam on every previously delivered vehicle.
Does my Tesla still support Steam?
There is no reliable yes-or-no answer based only on the model name. Reports tied Steam availability to the vehicle’s gaming hardware and memory. Not a Tesla App reported that the feature had been included on newer refreshed Model S and Model X vehicles with 16 GB of RAM, while earlier 8 GB vehicles were not supported without a retrofit. Read its coverage of the reported hardware distinction.

Edmunds reported that Steam was not available on Cybertruck, Model 3, or Model Y, and that 2021 Model S and Model X vehicles lacked enough RAM for the platform. Edmunds’ coverage is a useful reminder that a Tesla with Arcade games is not necessarily a Steam-capable Tesla.
For an individual vehicle, check its exact model year, configuration, software, and feature eligibility in the Tesla app. Tesla says available upgrades and features depend on model, trim, model year, and order date, and directs owners to the app for current eligibility: Tesla upgrades and feature eligibility. A generic “Model S” or “Model X” label is not enough to establish support.

Why did Tesla remove Steam from Model S and Model X?
Tesla has not given a confirmed public reason in the reports covering the withdrawal. Cost, hardware simplification, or low usage could be suggested as possible explanations, but none is established as the reason. The reported customer notice says the gaming computer is being updated; it does not explain why.

Can I add Steam back to a Tesla?
A controller, game purchase, or software setting cannot replace a gaming computer that is not capable of running Steam. The reports do not establish a general retrofit or other method that restores Steam to affected vehicles. If the feature matters to you, verify the exact vehicle’s configuration and current eligibility before buying it rather than assuming a used Model S or Model X includes Steam.
