The recall was not a finding that every affected Tesla hood would spontaneously open. The documented defect was that, after the hood had been opened and left unlatched, the vehicle might fail to detect its condition and fail to display a warning when the car was shifted into Drive. Tesla’s official remedy was a free over-the-air software update, not a consumer-purchased replacement hood latch.

What went wrong?
The affected system consisted of the front hood latch and the software that monitors the latch’s state. Tesla’s recall filing said that, after a customer opened the hood, the latch assembly could fail to detect that the hood remained unlatched. The car could then be placed in Drive without giving the driver the expected open-hood warning.

The filing identified the affected component as the hood-latch assembly, including part numbers 1500397-00-E and 1500397-00-F, supplied by Magna Closures (Kunshan) Co. Ltd. Tesla’s investigation identified latch-switch deformation as the condition involved in the reports it examined, although the filing did not describe the issue as a universal mechanical failure affecting every vehicle or every hood.
In practical terms, the risk was a combination of a physical condition and a detection failure:
- The hood could be left without the required fully latched condition after being opened.
- The vehicle might not recognize and report that condition.
- The driver could begin driving without realizing the hood was unlatched.
- The hood could then open fully and obstruct the view ahead.
Why can an unlatched hood cause a crash?
A hood that opens at speed can rise into the driver’s line of sight. Even if the hood remains attached to the vehicle, the resulting loss of forward visibility can make it difficult or impossible to see traffic, pedestrians, lane markings, or obstacles. NHTSA characterized the blocked view as an increased risk of a collision.
Tesla said it was not aware of crashes or injuries caused by this condition. As of July 20, 2024, Tesla’s NHTSA filing identified three U.S. warranty claims or field reports that might be related, but reported no known crashes, injuries, or deaths connected with the defect.

Which Tesla models are covered?
The amended NHTSA filing described this U.S. recall population:
- Model 3: Certain 2017–2024 vehicles manufactured from September 6, 2017, through July 15, 2024, when equipped with a hood latch produced in China.
- Model S: All delivered 2013–2024 vehicles in the stated recall population.
- Model X: All delivered 2016–2024 vehicles in the stated recall population.
- Model Y: All delivered 2020–2024 vehicles in the stated recall population.
Tesla’s owner-facing summary uses a narrower model-year presentation, identifying certain 2021–2024 Model 3 vehicles with the specified latch origin, along with 2021–2024 Model S, 2021–2024 Model X, and 2020–2024 Model Y vehicles. The difference is a reason not to determine eligibility from the model year alone. A vehicle identification number (VIN) check is the authoritative way to determine whether a particular car has an open recall.
How many vehicles were recalled?
The frequently reported “1.8 million” figure is a rounded description of the U.S. recall population, not a confirmed worldwide total. Tesla’s initial NHTSA Part 573 filing listed 1,850,363 potentially involved vehicles. Later NHTSA quarterly reporting tracked a population of 1,849,638 vehicles. Both figures refer to the U.S. campaign, and the later figure should not be treated as evidence that an additional global recall population has been counted.
How Tesla discovered the problem
Tesla told NHTSA that it began investigating unintended hood-opening complaints in China on March 25, 2024. The company began latch-hardware recovery and in-service inspection activity there on March 28, identified the condition by mid-April, and expanded its engineering investigation to Europe and North America on June 7.

The filing said occurrence rates were higher in China, although the reason for that difference was not known at the time of the filing. Tesla subsequently submitted the U.S. recall for the affected vehicle population.
What is the fix?
The documented fix is a software update that changes how the vehicle detects and reports an open-hood condition. Tesla says affected vehicles began receiving firmware release 2024.20.3 on June 18, 2024. Version 2024.20.3 or a later release addresses the recall condition by detecting the open-hood state and presenting a customer-facing notification.
Vehicles entering production beginning July 15, 2024, received software release 2024.20.100, which incorporated the remedy, according to the NHTSA filing.
This means the recall concerns the vehicle system, but the ordinary owner remedy is software-based. Owners should not assume they need to buy a replacement latch, hood strap, aftermarket restraint, or diagnostic device to complete the recall. Those items are not the official remedy described by Tesla or NHTSA.

What owners should do
Owner checklist
- Check the VIN. Use Tesla’s recall search or NHTSA’s vehicle-recall lookup. NHTSA also provides a lookup by license plate in its vehicle-safety resources.
- Check the installed software. On the vehicle touchscreen, open Controls > Software. The installed version is also shown at the bottom of the vehicle’s home screen in the Tesla mobile app.
- Confirm the version. Firmware 2024.20.3 or later addresses this condition, provided the vehicle is included in the relevant recall population.
- Allow the update to install. Tesla says an appointment is normally not required when the over-the-air update installs successfully.
- Contact Tesla if the update fails. If the download or installation fails and the problem persists, schedule a Tesla service appointment through Tesla’s normal service channel.
If the hood appears not to be fully latched, treat that as an immediate safety issue. Do not rely on the car to provide the warning covered by this recall. Stop in a safe location and have the hood properly checked before continuing to drive. The recall information does not authorize a generic repair or aftermarket restraint as a substitute for Tesla’s software remedy.
How to check a used Tesla
Anyone buying a used Model 3, Model S, Model X, or Model Y should check the vehicle’s VIN rather than relying on the seller’s model-year description or a claim that “all recalls were done.” Confirm that the recall is closed and inspect the car’s installed software version. If an open recall remains, the manufacturer is responsible for providing the recall remedy at no cost to the owner through its service channel.

What this recall does not mean
- It does not mean that every Tesla in the affected model range has a hood that will open while driving.
- It does not establish that every hood-latch assembly has a mechanical failure.
- It does not instruct ordinary owners to purchase or install a generic hood latch.
- It does not make an aftermarket strap, restraint, scanner, or repair accessory the official recall repair.
- It does not make the rounded 1.8-million figure a worldwide Tesla recall total.

Did the Tesla hood problem cause crashes or injuries?
Tesla reported no known crashes, injuries, or deaths related to the condition as of the information in the July 2024 recall filing. The safety risk was that an unlatched hood could open and obstruct forward visibility.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: This was a U.S. recall of about 1.85 million Teslas because the vehicle could fail to detect and warn about an unlatched front hood. A fully opened hood could block the driver’s view. Check the VIN and confirm firmware 2024.20.3 or later; the official remedy is a free Tesla over-the-air software update, with service help available if installation fails.
