Yes—the Tesla protest movement expanded from scattered local pickets into a coordinated national and international campaign. But the word rowdier needs an important qualification: the organized Tesla Takedown campaign repeatedly described itself as peaceful, while a separate wave of arson, gunfire, vandalism, and other attacks targeted Tesla vehicles and property.
Those are related parts of the same political climate, but the available evidence does not show that Tesla Takedown organizers directed or carried out the criminal attacks. The movement’s size is also easier to measure by its geographic reach and recurring events than by crowd totals. There is no authoritative nationwide attendance count.

What the headline means
The phrase “The Tesla protests are getting bigger—and rowdier” comes from March 2025 coverage of the Tesla Takedown movement. It works as a description of the campaign’s rapid expansion at that point, not as proof that every later demonstration was larger than every earlier one.

Musk had become deeply involved in the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, which was associated with federal workforce reductions and agency restructuring. For protesters opposed to those actions, Tesla was a more visible and practical target than an abstract political grievance: it was Musk’s best-known corporate asset, with showrooms, service centers, charging locations, vehicles, and a recognizable brand spread across the country.

That made the campaign both a political protest and a consumer pressure campaign. Organizers and supporters called for demonstrations outside Tesla facilities, boycotts, selling Tesla vehicles, and divesting Tesla stock. Their stated theory was that damaging Tesla’s reputation and business could reduce Musk’s wealth and political leverage. Fortune and NPR reported those objectives in March 2025, while Axios described Tesla Takedown as an early sign of grassroots backlash against Musk’s government role.
How a local protest campaign became a coordinated movement
The first demonstrations were comparatively sporadic. They grew through local organizing, social media, and the shared Tesla Takedown name rather than through one conventional national organization operating a single march.
By late February 2025, Axios reported demonstrations in at least 100 cities. The Associated Press reported more than 50 listed demonstrations during one weekend, with additional actions planned in the United States and in England, Spain, and Portugal. Those figures describe listed or reported events, not a verified national attendance total.
The clearest attempt at coordinated scale was the March 29, 2025 Global Day of Action. Organizers sought demonstrations at all 277 Tesla showrooms and service centers in the United States, along with parallel international events. CBS News and the AP described the effort as an attempt to surround Tesla’s U.S. retail and service footprint.
“All 277 locations” should not be read as “277 large crowds.” Some actions were likely small local gatherings, and event listings measure planned demonstrations rather than turnout. The defensible conclusion is that the campaign achieved unusually broad geographic coordination—not that it produced one uniformly large national crowd.
The tactics were familiar protest tactics
At most locations, demonstrations involved picketing outside a showroom or service center, chanting, carrying signs, talking with passing motorists, urging people not to buy Tesla vehicles, and calling for investors to sell Tesla stock. Those tactics are materially different from damaging vehicles, setting fires, firing weapons, or attacking employees and facilities.
The campaign’s decentralized structure also explains why events could look very different from one city to another. A local group might organize a brief sidewalk demonstration, while another arranged a larger action at a showroom or Supercharger site. A shared label created national visibility without producing a reliable system for counting attendance or assigning responsibility for every incident connected with Tesla.

Why Tesla became the target instead of Musk alone
Tesla is unusually exposed to backlash against its chief executive because Musk is not merely a rarely seen corporate manager. He is Tesla’s dominant public symbol. The company’s identity, media coverage, stock-market profile, and consumer reputation have been closely associated with him for years.
That association created a simple argument for protesters: buying a Tesla could be viewed as financially supporting Musk, while selling an existing Tesla or Tesla stock could be a way to oppose him. Whether that argument changes an individual’s purchasing decision is subjective, but it explains why the campaign focused on Tesla showrooms and vehicles rather than limiting demonstrations to government buildings.

The strategy also gave protesters several pressure points at once:
- Brand: make the Tesla name politically uncomfortable or commercially embarrassing.
- Sales: persuade prospective buyers to choose another electric vehicle.
- Ownership: encourage existing owners to sell or publicly distance themselves from Musk.
- Stock: urge investors to divest.
- Personal wealth: reduce the value of Musk’s most prominent corporate holding, as organizers and supporters described it.
Tesla’s own filings later acknowledged that negative perceptions connected with protests and criticism could harm its brand and business, including sales, and could make financing more difficult. That is important evidence that Tesla regarded the backlash as a material business risk. It is not, however, proof that protests caused a particular percentage of lost sales.
What “rowdier” means—and what it does not mean
The protests became more confrontational in political rhetoric, but the more serious escalation came from a separate series of criminal attacks on Tesla-related property.
On March 21, 2025, the FBI issued a public-service announcement warning about attacks on Tesla electric vehicles, dealerships, storage lots, and charging stations. The bureau said incidents had occurred since January in at least nine states and involved arson, gunfire, and vandalism. It described the known incidents as nighttime actions by lone offenders and warned that even rudimentary methods could be used to damage property.
The FBI later publicized an investigation into a Tesla charging-station fire in Lacey, Washington, on April 8, 2025. That case is a documented example of a criminal investigation; it does not establish the size, organization, or objectives of the protest movement.
The distinction matters:
| Activity | What the evidence supports | How it should be described |
|---|---|---|
| Peaceful demonstrations | Organizers promoted pickets, signs, chants, boycotts, and divestment. | A lawful protest campaign, subject to ordinary local rules. |
| Boycott or divestment | Supporters urged consumers and investors to stop financially supporting Tesla or Musk. | Consumer and financial pressure, not physical violence. |
| Vandalism, arson, or gunfire | The FBI documented attacks in multiple states, including damage to Tesla property. | Separate criminal conduct requiring attribution to specific suspects or cases. |
| Political accusations | Some officials and Musk used terrorism-related or criminal descriptions broadly. | Claims that must be attributed, not treated as neutral findings about every protester. |
Tesla Takedown’s campaign materials explicitly opposed violence, vandalism, and destruction of property. The Guardian reported that organizers worked to distance the movement from violent vandalism, and contemporary coverage noted that most demonstrations outside Tesla locations remained peaceful.

They changed the security environment around Tesla facilities and helped produce the “rowdier” public perception. But it would be inaccurate to collapse every protester, organizer, and criminal suspect into one group without evidence.
How politicians and Musk responded
The attacks brought federal attention and prompted aggressive political language. The FBI issued its nationwide warning. Senior political figures described attacks on Tesla property using terrorism-related language, and President Donald Trump vowed to treat vandalism and attacks against Tesla as domestic terrorism, according to NPR.
Musk also accused protesters of criminal conduct. During Tesla’s April 2025 earnings discussion, he called protesters “paid” without presenting evidence for that claim. That allegation should remain attributed rather than being presented as an established explanation for the demonstrations.

The political response sometimes merged two separate stories: a large wave of mostly peaceful public demonstrations and a smaller but dangerous series of criminal attacks. A careful account has to keep both facts in view without treating them as interchangeable.
Did the protests hurt Tesla’s sales?
Tesla had a difficult commercial period in early 2025. The Associated Press reported that the company’s first-quarter deliveries fell 13 percent year over year. NPR reported that first-quarter net income fell 71 percent and automotive revenue fell 20 percent year over year.
Those numbers show serious business pressure, but they do not isolate the effect of the protests. Tesla was dealing with several overlapping factors:
- an aging vehicle lineup at the time;
- stronger competition in the electric-vehicle market;
- changing consumer demand;
- pricing, financing, and broader economic conditions;
- Musk’s increasingly prominent political activity;
- negative brand perceptions; and
- attacks or threats affecting Tesla property and employees in some markets.
There is no clean public counterfactual showing what Tesla’s sales would have been if the protests had not occurred. Tesla’s filings and analysts treated the brand crisis as one factor among several. The accurate formulation is that the protests added reputational and commercial pressure during a weak sales period—not that the protests alone caused the sales decline.
The company’s own acknowledgment is still significant. Tesla executives said vandalism and hostility had affected the brand and employees in some markets, while the company’s 2025 Form 10-K expanded discussion of risks related to protests and negative perceptions. Corporate risk language does not quantify causation, but it demonstrates that Tesla considered the backlash consequential enough to disclose.

It did not disappear, although the evidence is stronger for persistence than for a verified nationwide resurgence.
Action Network listings documented recurring Tesla Takedown events in 2026. One listing identified a Week 78 event in Alhambra, California, on August 1, followed by a Week 79 event on August 8. The campaign continued to list actions at Tesla showrooms and Supercharger locations and continued to describe itself as peaceful. Other listings documented events or recurring organizing in Boston, San Francisco, and elsewhere. An Indivisible San Francisco listing showed a continuing local Tesla-related protest, and an Action Network listing from May 2026 documented organizing more than a year after the initial wave.
Those listings show that local networks remained active and that the campaign retained a usable political identity. They do not prove that 2026 attendance exceeded the March 2025 peak, or that the movement was growing nationally at a measurable rate. Planned events are not the same as turnout, and there is no authoritative nationwide database of Tesla Takedown attendance.
There were also later incidents of Tesla-related vandalism. In July 2026, Southern California reports described a man accused of spray-painting Tesla vehicles in Irvine parking garages, with police seeking to identify the suspect. Available reporting did not establish a connection between that case and an organized Tesla Takedown event. It is evidence that Tesla-related vandalism remained a live public-safety issue—not evidence of coordinated campaign activity.

For people attending a lawful demonstration
Anyone attending a protest should follow the event’s instructions and local rules, remain on lawful public routes or permitted property, avoid blocking driveways and traffic, and leave immediately if violence begins. Do not damage vehicles, buildings, charging equipment, signs, or other property, and do not confront employees or drivers.
The bottom line on Tesla Takedown
Tesla Takedown became bigger because it connected a national political grievance to a highly visible consumer brand. By late February 2025 it had reached at least 100 cities; by March 29 organizers were seeking actions at all 277 U.S. showrooms and service centers, with international demonstrations as well.

That criminal activity made the movement’s surroundings more dangerous, but the evidence does not show that campaign organizers ordered or carried out those attacks. The organized movement continued to present itself as peaceful, including in 2026 event listings.
Its business impact is equally real but difficult to quantify. Tesla’s sales and earnings weakened amid a combination of product-cycle, competitive, economic, political, and brand factors. The protests were part of that pressure, not a proven standalone explanation. The most defensible description of the movement in 2026 is therefore not “a verified nationwide explosion,” but a politically durable campaign that remained capable of recurring local demonstrations and continued to put Musk’s relationship with Tesla at the center of the debate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Tesla Takedown protests the same thing as the attacks on Tesla property?
No. Tesla Takedown organizers publicly described the campaign as peaceful and opposed vandalism and violence. Separately, the FBI documented arson, gunfire, and vandalism involving Tesla vehicles, dealerships, storage lots, and charging stations. Individual criminal cases should not be attributed to the protest movement without specific evidence.
How many people attended the Tesla protests?
There is no authoritative nationwide attendance total. Event listings and reports establish broad geographic reach, including demonstrations in at least 100 cities and a March 29 effort aimed at 277 U.S. Tesla showrooms and service centers, but planned locations do not equal turnout.
Did the protests cause Tesla’s 2025 sales decline?
The protests likely added reputational pressure, and Tesla disclosed brand and business risks connected with negative perceptions. However, Tesla’s sales and earnings were also affected by competition, its aging lineup, demand, financing, pricing, economic conditions, and Musk’s political activity. Available evidence does not isolate the protests’ contribution.
Were Tesla protests still happening in 2026?
Yes. Action Network and local organizing listings documented recurring Tesla Takedown events in places including Alhambra, Boston, and San Francisco through 2026. That supports continued local activity, but not a verified claim that national attendance was larger than the March 2025 peak.
The Bottom Line
Tesla Takedown grew into a widespread, coordinated protest campaign, but “rowdier” describes the dangerous criminal incidents that developed around it—not proof that peaceful organizers directed the violence. The movement remained locally active in 2026, while its precise effect on Tesla’s sales and value cannot be separated from the company’s broader product, competitive, economic, and political problems.
