What the jury decided
On August 1, 2025, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida found Tesla 33% at fault and driver George McGee 67% at fault. Tesla’s FY2025 filing says the jury awarded $129 million in total compensatory damages and $200 million in punitive damages. The verdict was a finding of shared responsibility, not a finding that Autopilot alone caused the crash.
The case, Benavides v. Tesla, Inc., was product-liability litigation. It began in Florida state court in 2021 and was removed to federal court that May, according to the court docket.
Why reports cite $200 million and $243 million
The figures describe different things. Tesla’s FY2025 filing identifies $200 million as punitive damages, separate from $129 million in total compensatory damages. The Associated Press reported that Tesla’s 33% share of the compensatory award was $43 million. Adding that reported share to the punitive award yields the widely reported $243 million verdict allocation against Tesla.

The $243 million is the reported allocation of the verdict, not necessarily the final collectible amount. Contemporary coverage discussed a dispute over how a damages cap could apply; the reviewed filings do not settle the ultimate amount payable.
What happened in the crash, and what each side argued
Naibel Benavides Leon was killed and Dillon Angulo was seriously injured in the 2019 crash, according to the Associated Press. McGee was driving a Tesla using Autopilot. The plaintiffs argued that Tesla’s technology and the way it could be used contributed to the collision. Tesla argued the driver was responsible and called the verdict wrong. Those were opposing trial positions; the jury’s decision was to assign fault to both Tesla and McGee.

McGee testified, “I trusted the technology too much,” the Associated Press reported. After the verdict, Tesla said: “Today’s verdict is wrong,” adding that it believed the decision would set back automotive safety and efforts to develop lifesaving technology. Both statements reflect the speakers’ positions, rather than additional jury findings.
What happens next
Tesla said it would appeal. Its FY2025 filing records that it filed a post-trial motion on September 15, 2025, seeking judgment as a matter of law or, alternatively, a new trial or an amended or reduced judgment. The reviewed filing does not establish how the court ruled on that motion or what happened with any appeal. The verdict’s later procedural status and the final amount, if any, payable therefore remain unresolved in these sources.

Why the verdict drew attention—and what it does not decide
The Associated Press described the trial as unusual because similar cases had often been dismissed or settled before reaching a jury. The verdict may influence how future claims are viewed, but it does not establish Tesla’s liability in other crashes or create a universal ruling about Autopilot. Each case depends on its facts and the legal record.
