On February 13, that outlet reported that Arcata police had received no reports of vandalized Teslas and corrected an earlier detail about flyers found on campus.

What Tesla owners in California were reportedly told
The incident began with four reports to the Arcata Police Department from local Tesla owners who found threatening notes on their vehicles, according to reporting by the Lost Coast Outpost. The messages reportedly told Tesla owners to trade in or sell their vehicles by February 12, 2025, or risk vandalism.
The Lost Coast Outpost also received an unsigned envelope containing a three-page statement and manifesto. The sender claimed that 10 students in Arcata and Seaside had delivered written warnings to 13 Tesla owners. The material was signed “SANE,” described as an abbreviation for “Students Against Nazi Extremism.”
According to the anonymous statement, Elon Musk was the political target of the protest. Its stated objective was to create enough social pressure and shame that buying or operating a Tesla would become burdensome. The document named four California cities:
- Arcata
- Rohnert Park
- Seaside
- Hayward
It claimed vandalism would begin on February 12. That was a claimed future action—not confirmation that the group existed as described or that the planned vandalism happened.
What was verified—and what was not
The most firmly documented part of the story is that Arcata police received four reports involving threatening notes. The other major claims came from anonymous materials and were not independently verified in the reporting reviewed.
| Claim or event | What the available reporting supports |
|---|---|
| Threatening notes in Arcata | Four Tesla owners reportedly contacted Arcata police between February 5 and 7, 2025. |
| A group called SANE | The name appeared on anonymous mailed materials; the group’s existence, membership, and organization were not independently confirmed. |
| 10 students warning 13 owners | This was the anonymous sender’s claim, not an independently verified count. |
| A coordinated February 12 vandalism campaign | The material described a planned action, but the reporting reviewed did not establish that it occurred. |
| Vandalized Teslas in Arcata after the warning | On February 13, the Lost Coast Outpost reported that Arcata police had received no reports of vandalized Teslas. |
The same February 13 update corrected an earlier university-police detail. Two flyers had reportedly been reported on campus, but the vehicles involved were not Teslas, and no Tesla vandalism had been reported there.

What happened in Seaside and Hayward?
Police in the other named cities did not report the same confirmed pattern at the time of the initial coverage. ABC7 reported that Hayward and Seaside police had not received reports of threats or vandalism as of its February 12 report. SFGATE reported that Seaside police took precautionary steps around a Tesla dealership and alerted drivers after learning about the claimed plan.
Those precautions should not be confused with confirmation that a coordinated attack occurred. They show that law enforcement treated the reported threat seriously enough to increase awareness, while the underlying anonymous claims remained unverified.
A separate Cybertruck incident occurred in Massachusetts
During the same period, Dr. Kumait Jaroje, a Worcester, Massachusetts, owner of a gold Tesla Cybertruck, reported a separate incident. CBS Boston reported that someone placed a profane sticker on the vehicle on February 7. Jaroje said he then received threats online and filed a police report; Worcester police were investigating.
Jaroje told CBS Boston that the harassment affected his family and business. He also said he attempted to trade in the Cybertruck but was told by a Tesla representative that Tesla was not accepting Cybertruck trade-ins at that time.
That account should not be presented as a universal Tesla trade-in policy. It was a statement about one owner’s reported experience at one point in time, and it was separate from the anonymous California materials.

That broader context does not prove that every Tesla-related incident had the same motive or came from the same people. The Associated Press also noted that Tesla’s sales weakness could have had multiple causes, including the timing of its model cycle and stronger competition. It would be inaccurate to attribute all sales changes to protests, threats, or vandalism without separate evidence.
On March 21, 2025, the FBI issued a public-service announcement saying that since January, incidents targeting Tesla vehicles, dealerships, storage lots, and charging stations had occurred in at least nine states. The FBI described incidents involving arson, gunfire, and vandalism. It said known incidents appeared to have been committed by lone offenders and that all known incidents had occurred at night.
The FBI announcement provides national context, but it does not connect the anonymous SANE materials to later incidents. The California warnings, the Worcester Cybertruck case, and subsequent nationwide attacks should be treated as separate events unless investigators establish a connection.

A House resolution introduced on April 1, 2025, cited attacks involving arson, gunfire, and vandalism in multiple states. Because it was a proposed resolution, its numerical and political assertions should be attributed to the resolution rather than treated as an independently verified national count.

- Do not handle a suspicious object unnecessarily. If a note is attached to a brick, package, or other potentially dangerous item, move away and contact local law enforcement. Do not confront anyone nearby.
- Preserve the threat. Photograph the note or message in place if doing so is safe. Keep the original paper, envelope, packaging, screenshots, usernames, timestamps, and relevant links.
- Report an immediate danger through emergency services. If someone is present, you believe an attack is imminent, or there is a suspicious device, use the appropriate emergency number. For non-immediate incidents, contact the local police department and request an incident number.
- Save nearby video quickly. Check the vehicle, home, business, parking lot, and neighboring cameras. Video may be overwritten, so export the relevant time period and keep an unedited copy.
- Tell the property owner or security team. If the car was parked at work, an apartment, a dealership, or a public facility, ask whether the site has surveillance and request preservation of footage.
- Avoid publicizing private identifying details. Sharing a threat can be useful for awareness, but publishing an address, license plate, routine, or family information can increase risk.
Police may ask for the exact wording, when and where the note was found, whether anyone saw the placement, and whether similar messages were sent to other owners. Keep the report number and provide updates if additional contact or damage occurs.

Using Sentry Mode to preserve evidence
Tesla’s owner documentation says Sentry Mode uses the vehicle’s cameras and sensors while the vehicle is locked and parked. Depending on the event and vehicle settings, it can trigger an alarm and save security-event footage. Tesla also says Dashcam must be enabled for Sentry Mode recording and that recorded footage requires a properly formatted USB drive.
A high-endurance USB drive for Tesla Sentry Mode can be useful for owners who want to preserve Sentry Mode or Dashcam clips, but storage is evidence capture—not prevention. Check the drive’s compatibility, formatting requirements, capacity, and endurance against the vehicle’s current manual and software instructions.
After an incident:
- Stop overwriting or deleting relevant clips.
- Copy the original files to another secure location.
- Keep the original files unchanged and make separate working copies if you need to trim clips.
- Record the vehicle’s date and time settings if they may be inaccurate.
- Give police the relevant time window and explain how the files were exported.
Tesla cautions that Sentry Mode cannot prevent every attack and that local camera, recording, and privacy laws may apply. An aftermarket dashcam or parking-monitoring camera is optional; Tesla vehicles already have integrated cameras and Sentry Mode, so an independent camera should not be described as necessary for Tesla owners.

Tesla’s claims guidance says vandalism or malicious mischief may fall under comprehensive coverage, subject to the specific policy, deductible, exclusions, and jurisdiction. Coverage is not automatic, and a claim may not be economically worthwhile if the repair cost is below or close to the deductible.

If the car is damaged:
- Photograph the entire vehicle and close-ups of every damaged area before cleaning or repairing it.
- Make a police report where appropriate and obtain the report or incident number.
- Preserve Sentry Mode, Dashcam, security-camera, and witness evidence.
- Contact the insurer and ask how the policy treats vandalism, malicious mischief, broken glass, towing, temporary transportation, and the deductible.
- Ask whether the insurer requires an inspection or approved repair estimate before work begins.
Review your comprehensive coverage for Tesla vandalism before an incident rather than assuming that every form of political harassment or vehicle damage will be covered. Availability, premiums, deductibles, and claim rules vary by state, insurer, and policy. Tesla’s guidance is not a substitute for reading the policy or confirming coverage with the insurer.

What this story does not establish
- It does not establish that all Tesla owners in California were threatened.
- It does not prove that SANE was a confirmed, organized group.
- It does not prove that 10 students warned 13 owners; that number came from anonymous materials.
- It does not prove that the threatened February 12 coordinated vandalism occurred.
- It does not connect the California notes to the Worcester Cybertruck incident or later attacks in other states.
- It does not show that Tesla owners were generally forced to sell or trade their vehicles.
- It does not establish a universal Tesla policy on Cybertruck trade-ins.
The defensible summary is narrower: Arcata police received four reports of threatening notes from Tesla owners in early February 2025; anonymous materials claimed responsibility and described a planned action in four California cities; and the available follow-up did not verify that the claimed coordinated vandalism took place.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. The available reporting documents four threatening-note reports in Arcata, but it does not show that Tesla owners were broadly forced to sell or trade their vehicles.
Were Tesla owners actually forced to sell their cars after receiving threats?
That was not established. “SANE,” its membership, and the claimed plan came from anonymous materials. On February 13, Arcata police reportedly had received no reports of vandalized Teslas.
Did the group SANE definitely vandalize Tesla vehicles?
Do not confront the person. Preserve notes, envelopes, screenshots, and video; contact emergency services if there is an immediate danger; otherwise report the incident to local police and keep the report number.
What should I do if someone threatens to vandalize my Tesla?
Vandalism or malicious mischief may fall under comprehensive coverage, but the result depends on the policy, deductible, exclusions, insurer, and location. Confirm the details with your insurer before assuming a claim will be covered.
Does comprehensive insurance cover Tesla vandalism?
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Arcata threats were real reports to police, but the alleged SANE organization and its planned February 12 vandalism campaign were not independently verified. Arcata police later reported no vandalized Teslas, and separate incidents elsewhere should not be merged into one proven conspiracy. Tesla owners who receive threats should preserve the evidence, contact police, save camera footage, and review comprehensive coverage rather than confront anyone or assume a claim will be covered.
