Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIn the original PC version of Assetto Corsa, change camera views during a driving session by pressing F1 through F6: F1 is cockpit, F2 automatic, F3 TV/trackside, F5 exterior free camera, and F6 onboard cameras. These are default bindings, not fixed controls—check the controls menu if your function keys do nothing.
Default camera controls in Assetto Corsa
In the original Assetto Corsa on PC, press F1 through F6 during a driving session or replay to switch between the main camera types. These are the default keyboard shortcuts; you can change them in the game’s controls or key-bindings menu.

| Key | Default camera | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| F1 | Driver/cockpit view | Places you inside the car. Repeated presses may cycle through available driver-facing positions. |
| F2 | Automatic camera | Lets the game select an automated camera view, useful for observing a session. |
| F3 | TV/trackside camera | Shows broadcast-style or fixed views around the circuit, particularly useful for replays and spectating. |
| F5 | Exterior free camera | Detaches the viewpoint from the normal driving camera so you can move around or orbit the car. |
| F6 | Onboard camera | Cycles through the onboard cameras provided by the current car. |
| F8 | Screenshot | Does not change the view; it captures a screenshot. |
To change views, start a race, practice session, hot-lap session, or replay, then press the relevant function key. Camera shortcuts may not respond from the main menu.
How to change the cockpit view and field of view
Press F1 to enter the standard driver or cockpit view. If you need a wider or narrower perspective, use Ctrl + numeric-keypad Plus or Ctrl + numeric-keypad Minus. This field-of-view shortcut applies specifically to the driver view, not automatically to every camera mode.
#1 Best Overall
- Immersive Gaming Experience: Perfect for PlayStation 5, PS4 and PC gaming titles, the Driving Force simulates the feeling of driving a real car with precision steering and pressure-sensitive pedals
- Premium Control: The Driving Force feedback racing wheel provides a detailed simulation of driving a real car, with helical gearing delivering smooth, quiet steering and a hand-stitched leather cover
- Customizable Pedals: These pressure-sensitive nonlinear brake pedals provide a responsive, accurate braking feel on a sturdy base - with adjustable pedal faces for finer control
- 900-Degree Rotation: Lock-to-lock rotation of the Driving Force means you can turn the wheel around two and a half times, hand over hand on wide turns - just like a real F1 race car
- Up Your Game: Take your racing simulation to the next level with Driving Force accessories like the Driving Force Shifter or desk and rig mounts
A wider field of view shows more of the surroundings but can make the cockpit and cars appear smaller or create a distorted-looking perspective. A narrower field of view gives a more zoomed-in view and may make distant objects easier to judge. Adjust it gradually while stationary, then check the result on track.
If you use VR, the keyboard guide includes Ctrl + Space as an Oculus VR recenter command. Depending on the setup, recentering can also be assigned through the left-look and right-look controls. VR camera behavior can depend on the headset and configuration, so use the active bindings shown by your installation if the shortcut does not work.
Using the F5 exterior free camera
F5 is the usual base-game choice for photographs, replay shots, and views outside the car. The official keyboard layout describes mouse movement, mouse buttons, and the mouse wheel as the controls for manipulating this camera. Select the car and enter a replay or active session, press F5, then use the mouse to reposition the viewpoint and change its distance.
Some PC installations and community tools provide more extensive free-camera behavior. Community documentation commonly describes F5 as a camera that follows the selected car and F7 as a static free camera. However, F7 is not a universally reliable camera shortcut across every screen or installation: the official keyboard reference lists it in a showroom context, while community configurations use it for free-camera functions in other contexts. Check the in-game binding before relying on it.

Optional configuration entries such as allow_free_camera=1 and camera_onboard_free have been documented in Assetto Corsa’s PC system/cfg directory. Treat these as community-supported troubleshooting or customization steps, not requirements for ordinary camera switching. Back up the configuration file before editing it, and undo the change if it causes unexpected camera or session behavior.
What to do if the camera keys do nothing
- Confirm the game. Make sure you are playing the original Assetto Corsa, not Assetto Corsa Competizione. They are separate games and their camera controls should not be mixed.
- Test during a session. Enter a race, practice session, hot lap, or replay and try F1, F2, F3, F5, and F6. Do not test only from the main menu.
- Check the function layer. Compact keyboards and some laptops require holding Fn while pressing a function key. If your keyboard has an F-lock or function-mode key, check its current state.
- Open the controls menu. Look for the camera, view, or keyboard bindings and verify which commands are assigned. The defaults can be rebound, so another command—or no command—may be assigned to F1 through F6.
- Check the input device and conflicts. A keyboard, controller, wheel, VR device, or third-party utility may have its own bindings. Assetto Corsa supports several input types, but that does not mean every device uses the same layout.
- Inspect Content Manager separately. If you launch the game through Content Manager, check its Assetto Corsa controls and view bindings as well as the base game’s settings. Content Manager and Custom Shaders Patch can expose additional camera controls that are not part of the basic keyboard shortcut list.
- Use configuration edits only last. If the normal bindings and keyboard function layer are correct, back up your PC configuration files before investigating optional free-camera settings or developer-camera tools.
Content Manager and advanced camera editing
Content Manager is optional for changing the standard camera. You do not need it to press F1 for cockpit view, F3 for trackside view, or F5 for the exterior free camera. On PC, however, it may offer a more convenient place to inspect or reassign camera and view commands, along with camera-editor features used by mod users.
There is also a difference between selecting a camera and editing its underlying position. For example, the car-specific dash_cam.ini file defines the dashboard-camera position and exposure used when cycling the F1 driver cameras. Depending on the car, this file may be in the car’s data directory or packed inside data.acd. Editing it is an advanced modding task and is unnecessary if you simply want to change views.
Before modifying car data, make a backup and remember that mod updates may overwrite your changes. Not every car supplies the same number of onboard or driver-facing camera positions.

Assetto Corsa versus Assetto Corsa Competizione
This guide covers the original Assetto Corsa, the Kunos Simulazioni racing simulation published by 505 Games. It does not provide the controls for Assetto Corsa Competizione, which is a separate title with different menus, content, and community camera instructions.
In particular, do not assume that an ACC guide mentioning F7 or Ctrl+F7 applies to the original game. If the title screen or launcher says Competizione, open that game’s own control settings instead of applying the shortcuts in this article.
Do you need a racing wheel to change the camera?
No. A keyboard, controller, or other supported input device is enough to change the view. A wheel is an optional driving upgrade, not a camera-control requirement. Assetto Corsa supports keyboards, gamepads, steering wheels, professional devices, motion systems, VR, triple monitors, and TrackIR.
If you already want a more authentic driving setup, a USB racing wheel and pedals for PC can also give you convenient spare buttons for camera changes. Check the current model’s PC compatibility and map a wheel button in Assetto Corsa’s controls; do not buy one solely to access F1–F6.
