Some Tesla owners are trying to keep the car while rejecting what they believe it now represents. In response to Elon Musk’s political activity and the backlash surrounding him, owners have covered Tesla logos with anti-Musk stickers, removed the badges entirely, or replaced them with Mazda, Honda, Audi, Rivian, Toyota, and other automakers’ emblems.
The point usually is not to fool anyone who looks closely. It is to make a visible distinction: this car may be a Tesla, but its owner does not want Tesla ownership interpreted as support for Musk.
A Tesla wearing a Mazda badge is usually making a statement
The most conspicuous examples are ordinary-looking Tesla vehicles carrying the branding of another automaker. Reports in early 2025 showed Teslas with Mazda, Honda, Audi, and Rivian badges, along with cars stripped of recognizable branding altogether. Other examples cited Toyota-style ornaments or more theatrical messages projected onto a Cybertruck.
These modifications are generally symbolic rather than serious attempts at deception. A Tesla’s shape, lighting, wheels, charging hardware, and interior remain recognizable. The substitute badge is instead a visual contradiction of the vehicle’s original identity—and, by extension, of the association some drivers now make between Tesla and Musk.

Fast Company described the practice on March 12, 2025, as a form of visual resistance. Electrek likewise reported examples of owners removing Tesla logos, installing other brands’ badges, and using projected messages to comment on the Cybertruck’s political and cultural symbolism.
That evidence supports a reported and visible trend, not a measurement of the Tesla fleet. The available coverage consists primarily of interviews, photographs, social-media posts, and individual accounts. It does not show that most Tesla owners—or even a statistically representative percentage—are disguising their cars.
The badge trend followed an earlier wave of stickers
Owners began using less permanent disclaimers before the rebadging examples appeared. In late 2024, sticker sellers reported increased demand for products such as “Anti Elon Tesla Club,” “I Bought This Before Elon Went Crazy,” and “Space Clown.” Other reported messages included “This is my last Tesla” and “Bought used, no $ to Musk.”
The Guardian reported that one Model 3 owner still liked her car but felt embarrassed driving it after the 2024 election. She used an “Anti Elon Tesla Club” magnet to make her position clear without changing the vehicle permanently.
Axios reported in December 2024 that one seller claimed to have sold approximately 18,000 stickers in 30 countries. That figure was the seller’s own claim, not an independently audited estimate of demand or of Tesla owners’ views. Amazon and Etsy were reported to carry similar products.
For owners who want a temporary or reversible signal, an anti-Elon Tesla bumper sticker is less invasive than removing factory adhesive or installing a substitute emblem. But no single slogan should be treated as representative of Tesla owners generally. Some buyers may be making a political statement; others may simply be clarifying that their purchase predates Musk’s more prominent political role.
Why keep the Tesla instead of selling it?
The practical explanation is as important as the cultural one: replacing a car is expensive.
Several owners interviewed by news organizations said they disliked the association with Musk but continued driving their Teslas because the vehicles remained useful, efficient, comfortable, or financially necessary. Some had bought the cars before Musk’s political profile became as central to the brand in the public conversation. Others could not afford to absorb the loss involved in selling and replacing a functioning vehicle.
The Los Angeles Times reported on owners who felt uncomfortable with what their cars appeared to represent but did not sell because of falling resale values or the cost of buying something else. One owner estimated that a vehicle purchased for roughly $90,000 was worth about $13,000; that was his personal estimate, not a standardized valuation.

KUOW reported a Seattle-area owner who sold a Tesla for nearly $12,000 less than the purchase price, as well as another owner who continued using a Model 3 because she needed reliable transportation for work. These accounts illustrate why rebadging can be an attractive compromise: it may allow an owner to retain the vehicle’s utility without displaying its most controversial branding.
They do not establish how widespread that financial calculation is across the country. Vehicle value depends on model, age, mileage, condition, local demand, financing, incentives, and the broader used-EV market.
Some owners are also worried about hostility or vandalism
Not every disclaimer is purely ideological. Some owners have described the modification as a way to signal that they do not endorse Musk and perhaps reduce the chance of being treated as a political proxy.
The FBI issued a public-safety alert on March 21, 2025, saying Tesla vehicles, dealerships, storage lots, and charging stations had been targeted in at least nine states since January. The alert referenced incidents involving arson, gunfire, and vandalism. The Guardian also reported protests, hostility, and owners’ attempts to distance themselves from Musk.
That context explains why a sticker or altered badge can feel more urgent than ordinary car personalization. However, there is no evidence in the available reporting that a disguise reliably prevents vandalism, harassment, or theft. A modified badge may communicate the owner’s views to one person and go unnoticed by another. It should be understood as a signal, not a proven safety measure.
What owners are changing
1. Stickers and magnets
Stickers and magnets are the simplest intervention. They can be placed near a Tesla emblem or on the rear of the car, where following drivers are likely to see them. Magnets are potentially easier to remove, although any product placed on automotive paint can trap dirt or leave residue if it is neglected or poorly removed.
Reported phrases include:
- “Anti Elon Tesla Club”
- “I Bought This Before We Knew Elon Was Crazy”
- “This is my last Tesla”
- “Bought used, no $ to Musk”
- “Space Clown”
The wording ranges from direct political criticism to a simple disclaimer that the owner’s purchase should not be read as an endorsement.

Some owners remove the Tesla emblem and model lettering without adding anything in their place. KUOW documented Seattle owner Jordan Schwartz removing the Tesla logos and “DUAL MOTOR” lettering from a Model Y. His explanation was that removing every symbol made the statement clearer.

A blank vehicle can look cleaner and less overtly political than one carrying an anti-Musk slogan, but it does not eliminate every way to identify the car. The body design may still make the model obvious, and removing a badge can leave adhesive, paint differences, or holes if the particular emblem uses pins or other attachment hardware.
3. A different automaker’s badge
Replacing a Tesla emblem with a Mazda, Honda, Audi, Rivian, Toyota, or another automaker’s logo is the most visually absurd version of the trend. The mismatch is part of the joke and part of the message. It says that the owner is rejecting the original branding rather than trying to create a convincing counterfeit vehicle.
If you are considering a replacement car emblem, verify the dimensions, curvature, attachment method, and placement for the specific Tesla model and model year. A generic badge may not fit the body panel, and installing another company’s trademark can create additional questions about confusion, resale disclosure, or local law.
4. Projected messages
One Cybertruck owner reportedly used projected messages on the tailgate, including pleas not to graffiti the vehicle and self-deprecating commentary about its appearance. That is a more elaborate form of expression than a badge or sticker and should not be treated as typical of the broader trend.
How Tesla badge removal works on a Model Y
Tesla’s official service documentation provides a useful reference, but its scope matters. The relevant manual is for the 2020–2024 Model Y, and the version cited in the research dossier was updated January 30, 2025. It covers the front hood badge—not every Tesla badge, body panel, model, or model year.
For that Model Y procedure, Tesla specifies approximately 60 centimeters of monofilament line. The line is worked behind the badge with a sawing motion to separate the emblem from the hood. After removal, Tesla specifies IPA wipes for adhesive residue. Tesla also states that a removed badge cannot be reinstalled; restoration requires a new part.
A basic car badge removal tool or monofilament badge-removal line can be relevant to that procedure, but it does not make the job risk-free. Owner discussions also commonly mention a hairdryer, heat gun, and dental floss. Those are informal owner suggestions, not equivalent to Tesla-approved instructions. Excessive heat can damage paint or trim, and aggressive sawing or prying can scratch the panel.

Check the applicable Tesla service information for the exact model, year, badge location, and attachment method.
- Protect the surrounding paint. Work in a clean area and avoid inserting a hard tool between the emblem and the body panel.
- Use the specified line carefully. For the cited 2020–2024 Model Y front badge procedure, Tesla calls for about 60 cm of monofilament line and a sawing motion.
- Remove adhesive residue gently. Tesla identifies IPA wipes for this task. IPA wipes for car adhesive belong alongside—not instead of—the official procedure.
- Inspect before applying anything new. Check for paint damage, remaining adhesive, holes, alignment features, or a visible outline of the original badge.
- Do not assume the original badge can go back on. Tesla says the removed badge must be replaced with a new part if restoration is required.
Do not generalize this procedure to a Model 3, Model S, Model X, Cybertruck, a newer Model Y, or a different badge position without checking the relevant service information. Badge geometry, adhesive, alignment pins, and panel materials may differ.

Removing Tesla branding from your own vehicle is not the same question as installing another automaker’s trademark. The available reporting documents the practice but does not establish a universal rule governing rebadging.
Depending on the jurisdiction and how the vehicle is represented, another company’s emblem could raise trademark, consumer-confusion, or resale-disclosure questions. A private visual joke is different from advertising the car for sale as a genuine vehicle made by the substitute brand. Anyone planning to sell, trade, insure, or commercially display the vehicle should check the rules that apply locally and disclose modifications accurately.

There is also a practical resale issue. A replacement badge is unlikely to restore value and could make a future buyer wonder whether the panel was repaired, repainted, or modified. Keep the original parts and photograph the vehicle before modification if you proceed.

The geographic picture is also limited. The strongest reporting is concentrated in the United States, especially liberal-leaning areas, with additional international coverage. The Guardian, Axios, Fast Company, Electrek, the Los Angeles Times, and KUOW provide corroborating accounts of a visible cultural reaction, but they do not constitute one national survey.
Why this matters beyond the joke
The altered badges turn an abstract brand dispute into something visible on the road. They allow owners to separate the practical object—the vehicle they bought, rely on, or cannot afford to replace—from the public identity associated with its most famous executive.
That separation is the central theme running through the reporting. Owners can still value an EV’s efficiency, comfort, range, or usefulness while objecting to Musk’s political conduct. Stickers, blank panels, and mismatched badges do not erase the Tesla underneath. They announce that the owner does not want the car to speak for them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Tesla owners actually disguising their cars?
Yes, some owners have removed Tesla badges, left their cars unbadged, or installed badges associated with Mazda, Honda, Audi, Rivian, Toyota, and other automakers. The practice is documented, but the available reporting does not establish how many owners are doing it.
Why would someone keep a Tesla but hide the branding?
Reported reasons include rejecting Elon Musk’s political identity, avoiding perceived association with him, concerns about hostility toward Tesla vehicles, and the financial difficulty of selling or replacing a functioning car.
Does rebadging make a Tesla impossible to recognize?
Usually not. The replacement badge is generally symbolic or tongue-in-cheek. The vehicle’s shape and other features can still identify it as a Tesla.
Can every Tesla badge be removed using the Model Y instructions?
No. Tesla’s cited instructions apply to the front hood badge on the 2020–2024 Model Y. Other models, model years, and badge locations may use different adhesives, geometry, or attachment systems.
Does Tesla say a removed badge can be reused?
For the cited Model Y procedure, Tesla says a removed badge cannot be reinstalled and must be replaced with a new part if restoration is needed.

Disguised Teslas are best understood as a brand-identity backlash made physical. Some owners are trying to preserve the usefulness of their cars while deleting or contradicting the Tesla-Musk association. The trend is real and repeatedly documented, but it remains a qualitative cultural story—not evidence that a particular share of Tesla owners has turned against the brand or that rebadging guarantees safety.
