The allegations were disputed, and news reports in 2026 said the case was dismissed. The case does not establish that Tesla odometers overcount mileage generally or that the company deliberately manipulated them.
What the Tesla odometer lawsuit alleged
Nyree Hinton’s complaint concerned a used 2020 Tesla Model Y he bought in December 2022. According to the filing, the car showed 36,772 miles at purchase. Hinton alleged that the displayed mileage rose more quickly than his driving routine could account for, including periods when the vehicle was being repaired.
The complaint compared the car’s reported mileage with Hinton’s estimate that his normal use was about 20 miles per day. It alleged an average of 55.54 reported miles per day in one period and 72.35 miles per day in a later period. These are figures asserted in the complaint, not independent measurements or findings by a court.
Why the alleged mileage mattered for the warranty
Hinton alleged that the vehicle reached the 50,000-mile basic warranty limit around July 7, 2023, sooner than he expected based on his use. The complaint argued that a mileage discrepancy could shorten the time before warranty coverage tied to that limit ended. That is the plaintiff’s account of the potential impact; it is not a finding that Tesla intentionally reduced his coverage.

How the complaint said Tesla’s mileage system worked
The plaintiff’s technical theory was that Tesla’s system relied on energy use and driver-behavior information rather than simply counting actual distance traveled. The complaint offered that as an explanation for the mileage Hinton said he observed. It does not, by itself, prove how production Tesla odometers calculate or store mileage.
What Tesla argued in response
A February 2026 news report described Tesla’s motion seeking dismissal and disputing the allegations. As reported, Tesla argued that plaintiffs had drawn unsupported conclusions from a patent; Tesla said it concerned trip-planning software for optimizing charging stops, not odometer calculations.

The same report said Tesla pointed to an inspection comparison showing 68,490.65 miles on the front drive unit, 68,574 miles on the odometer, and 68,695.92 miles on the rear drive unit. Those figures were part of Tesla’s litigation argument as described by the report. They are not an independent determination that the odometer was accurate or inaccurate.
Was the lawsuit dismissed?
News reports in March and June 2026 said a judge dismissed Hinton’s proposed class action. The precise terms and procedural effect of the dismissal—including whether it was with prejudice or whether amendment or appeal was allowed—are not established here because the dismissal order was not located. The reported dismissal should not be treated as a ruling that resolves odometer accuracy across Tesla vehicles.

Does the case show that Tesla odometers add miles across the fleet?
No. The case centered on one owner’s allegations and Tesla’s response. The complaint’s daily mileage figures are not fleet-wide data, and the sources describing the dispute do not establish that Tesla odometers generally overcount, that miles are routinely added while cars are repaired, or that Tesla manipulated odometers.

- Odometer readings with dates, including photographs when practical.
- Trip distances and the readings before and after a drive.
- Service and repair visits, including dates and mileage recorded on work orders.
- Warranty documents and communications about mileage-related coverage.
These records can make it easier to explain a discrepancy to a service provider or discuss a specific warranty dispute with a qualified professional. They do not establish that the cause is odometer error or misconduct.
