No. Tesla’s follow-up recall for loose Model X roof trim requires a physical inspection and, if needed, hands-on repair or replacement. It is not an over-the-air software update. Owners of potentially affected vehicles should check the 17-digit VIN and request recall service through Tesla.
Why this recall needs an in-person repair
The recall concerns the front roof applique, the center spine applique, or both. If the trim was installed without primer at the urethane interface, its adhesion may weaken over time and the applique may separate from the roof. Tesla says: “If not properly secured, the front and spine applique can detach from the roof and fall off while driving.”
Because the fault is in the physical bond between the trim and roof, updating vehicle software cannot correct it. Tesla’s service bulletin describes a physical retention inspection followed by rework or replacement when indicated. It classifies the repair as “Cannot Perform” by mobile service and says recall work that cannot be completed by a customer-installed software update must be done at a Tesla-certified service center. Why Tesla issued a follow-up recall
Tesla’s earlier recall, initiated November 17, 2020, used a pull inspection with a maximum force of 60 N. In its 2024 recall report, Tesla said later review found that the force used, or the number and locations of the pulls, had not reliably identified every part at risk of separating. Which Model X vehicles may be affected?
Tesla lists Model X vehicles manufactured from September 17, 2015 through July 31, 2016. The dates are a screening guide, not confirmation that a particular vehicle has an open recall. The service bulletin covers Model X model year 2016, all regions, and Fremont-built vehicles; applicability must be confirmed by VIN and bulletin tracking. Tesla recall page · Tesla service bulletin
How to check your VIN and request service
- Find the 17-digit VIN. Check Tesla’s Model X recall page or use the Tesla VIN Recall Search. You can also check through Tesla’s recall information page, which links to recall resources.
- Request an appointment in the Tesla app. Go to Service > Request Service > Other > Something Else, then enter “Open Recall Repair – Model X Roof / Spine Applique.”
- Have Tesla inspect the trim. Tesla states that inspection should take less than 20 minutes. If the applique passes the retention test, no further action is needed. If it fails, Tesla will rework it with the proper primer and urethane process or replace it if necessary; Tesla estimates replacement at 45 minutes. These are Tesla’s stated time estimates, not independently verified labor times.

What to do if the trim moves or separates
Tesla says cabin noise or visible movement or separation may be noticed before an applique detaches. If you observe movement or separation while driving, pull over safely and contact Tesla Roadside. A detached applique could become a road hazard for following traffic and increase crash or injury risk. Tesla says it is not aware of accidents or injuries resulting from this condition. Do not treat an aftermarket trim purchase as a substitute for the recall repair. The bulletin identifies replacement assemblies, but the correct part depends on VIN and vehicle configuration; Tesla should confirm eligibility and applicable parts.
