Not enough evidence shows that ending production has boosted Model S or Model X values or created collector demand. Tesla announced the decision in January 2026, and the last cars reportedly left its Fremont line in May. Those milestones establish that the models were discontinued; they do not establish a rise in asking prices, completed-sale values, or auction results.
What happened to Model S and Model X production?
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on the January 28, 2026 earnings call that production would end in the following quarter. TechCrunch quoted him saying, “It’s time to basically bring the Model S and X programs to an end with an honorable discharge, because we’re really moving into a future that is based on autonomy.” TechCrunch reported the announcement alongside Musk’s statement that Tesla would support existing owners “for as long as people have the vehicles.”
That broad statement describes an intention to support owners, not a defined warranty, parts-supply commitment, or service-level guarantee. Separately, Car and Driver reported on May 12, 2026 that the last Model S and Model X had rolled off Tesla’s Fremont, California production line. The announcement and the completion of production are different milestones.
Does discontinuation raise resale prices or create collector demand?
It can make a model more noticeable, but discontinuation alone is not evidence of appreciation. The available reporting does not provide a before-and-after series of Model S or Model X completed-sale prices, a measured collector premium, or quantified collector demand. Future appreciation and collector status therefore remain unknown—not established outcomes.

Be precise about what “price” means. A seller’s asking price, a dealer’s trade-in offer, an auction result, and a completed private sale are different measures. A single listing or asking-price report cannot show that owners are getting more when they sell.
Tesla’s sales reporting also makes it difficult to infer a separate trend: TechCrunch reported in April 2026 that Tesla grouped Model S and Model X with Cybertruck under “other models.” That combined category does not reveal model-specific S/X sales or buyer demand.

What does the available used-price reference show?
An Associated Press article contributed by Edmunds reported in September 2026 that US used 2026 Model S pricing started around $110,000 at publication, and noted that used versions remained available after Tesla stopped selling new Model S sedans from its website. That is a dated asking-price snapshot, not a completed-sale statistic, an average, a current quote, or evidence that discontinuation caused prices to rise. It says nothing comparable about Model X values.
Why might the cars have historical significance?
The Model S launched in 2012 and the Model X followed in 2015, according to TechCrunch’s January 2026 report. Their place in Tesla’s history may matter to some buyers, but age and historical significance do not by themselves make a vehicle scarce or collectible. The evidence here does not establish a collector market for either car, and the S and X should not be treated as one market: they are different body styles and buyer propositions.

How to assess an individual Model S or Model X
For a purchase or sale, compare like with like rather than relying on the discontinued label. Use current local listings and completed transactions where available, and check:
- Model year and configuration or trim
- Mileage and overall condition
- Geography and the difference between asking prices and completed-sale prices
- Ownership, maintenance, battery, and repair records
- Software features and other vehicle-specific entitlements
These are practical comparison points, not factors whose effects on value have been quantified by the reporting cited here. A specific vehicle’s price should be judged against relevant comparables, not a general prediction about collector value.

What does discontinuation mean for support and software features?
The owner-support statement reported by TechCrunch should not be confused with a guarantee about every repair, part, or feature. Buyers should verify support and included equipment for the particular vehicle they are considering.
Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Transfers page says its transfer program for customers taking delivery of a new Tesla by March 31, 2026 is no longer available. It also says a completed transfer stays with the receiving vehicle and cannot be reversed. The transfer terms may matter when assessing a particular car; confirm its current, vehicle-specific software entitlements with Tesla.
