Model 3 vs. Model Y at a glance
Tesla describes the Model 3 as a sport sedan and the Model Y as an electric midsize SUV. The figures below are manufacturer specifications from Tesla’s U.S. product pages retrieved October 3, 2026; they are not independent test results. Trim names and specifications can change.

Which fits your everyday use?
Choose Model 3 for a sedan
The Model 3 is the more natural fit if you want a lower sport-sedan shape and its listed 24 cu ft of cargo space works for your regular loads. Its standard specification is 185.8 inches long and 56.7 inches high. Measure your own garage and parking space rather than relying on body-style labels alone.

Choose Model Y for SUV form and more cargo room
The Model Y’s standard specification lists 74 cu ft of cargo capacity, compared with 24 cu ft for the Model 3. The figure makes it a candidate if your routine involves bulkier items, but volume alone does not tell you whether a particular item fits: check the loading opening and the item’s dimensions. The standard Model Y is 188.7 inches long and 63.8 inches high.
The Model Y page also presents other configurations with different cargo figures, including 74.8 cu ft for the standard AWD listing and 76 cu ft for Premium and Performance. Do not treat these figures as interchangeable with the standard rear-wheel-drive specification.

Which Tesla is better for a family?
There is no universal family winner. Both standard configurations list five seats. Tesla’s Model Y page separately lists configurations with up to seven seats and a six-seat Model Y L; those are distinct offerings, and availability depends on market and exact configuration. Do not assume every Model Y seats seven. The Model 3 page lists five seats.
Start with how many people you regularly carry and the cargo that travels with them. If five seats are enough, compare how each vehicle’s shape and cargo capacity suit your usual trips. If you need more than five seats, verify that the specific Model Y configuration you can order locally has the seating you need.

Range and performance depend on the trim
The 321-mile EPA estimates apply to the standard rear-wheel-drive versions displayed on Tesla’s U.S. pages when retrieved October 3, 2026—not every Model 3 or Model Y. Tesla lists these other figures on those pages:
| Model and displayed configuration | EPA-estimated range | 0–60 mph | Listed cargo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model 3 Premium AWD | 346 mi | 4.2 sec | 24 cu ft |
| Model 3 Performance | 309 mi | 2.9 sec | 24 cu ft |
| Model Y standard AWD | 294 mi | 4.6 sec | 74.8 cu ft |
| Model Y Premium | 327 mi | not stated on the retrieved product page | 76 cu ft |
| Model Y Performance | 306 mi | not stated on the retrieved product page | 76 cu ft |
| Model Y L | 332 mi | not stated on the retrieved product page | 89 cu ft |
These are Tesla-published specifications retrieved October 3, 2026; Tesla calls the range figures “EPA est.” The product-page figures are estimates, not promises of real-world driving range. Results on a trip can differ, and the cited pages do not establish a comparative real-world range test.

For a like-for-like decision, compare the exact drivetrain and trim you are considering on Tesla’s current local pages. Tesla’s product pages also describe “miles added” in 15-minute charging claims as based on constant-speed data. Charging speed depends on conditions and charging equipment, so those claims are not a direct measure of how quickly your own trip will charge.
Price: compare local orders on equal terms
Tesla’s U.S. Model 3 page retrieved October 3, 2026 listed a starting price of $38,630, including destination and order fees but excluding taxes and other fees; Tesla says the price is subject to change. The retrieved Model Y page had multiple price presentations and fee qualifications, so it does not support a like-for-like price winner here.

The published dimensions offer a starting point, not a substitute for checking the places you park and drive. The standard Model Y is taller and has 1 inch more listed ground clearance than the standard Model 3; its overall length is 2.9 inches greater. Consider garage height, driveway slope, parking-space length, and local road conditions against your own measurements and routine.
Before choosing, make a short checklist:
- How many people do you carry on a typical trip, and do you need a verified six- or seven-seat configuration?
- What bulky items do you regularly load, and will they pass through the opening as well as fit inside?
- Which exact trim and drivetrain are you comparing, and what EPA estimate is listed for each?
- Will the vehicle fit your garage, driveway, and regular parking spaces?
- What are the current local order prices with destination, order fees, taxes, incentives, and financing assumptions separated?
- How will you charge at home or work, and what does your typical annual mileage look like?
These specifications do not establish which model will cost less to insure or own, retain value better, or deliver more real-world range for your driving. Those questions require information specific to your location, coverage, and use.
