The post and footage are not an official crash finding: the available material does not independently verify the system’s state, the cause, or the outcome.
What the video and post say happened
The Reddit post describes a new Tesla Model 3 on Full Self-Driving and says four dashcam angles show the car leaving a straight road in clear daylight before crashing into a ditch. It characterizes the steering as sudden and says the driver reported FSD was active. Those details are claims made in a user-generated post, not independently established facts. The material does not establish when or where the incident happened, the exact vehicle or software configuration, whether anyone was injured, or what caused the car to leave the road. A police report, vehicle telemetry or crash reconstruction would be needed to substantiate those details. A commenter’s suggestion that the car reacted to a shadow is speculation, not a confirmed explanation.
What “Full Self-Driving” means for the driver
NHTSA describes Tesla FSD as a Level 2 partial automation system. Such systems assist with certain driving tasks, but the driver must supervise them, remain attentive and intervene as needed. The driver remains responsible for driving and obeying traffic laws. The name “Full Self-Driving” does not mean the vehicle performs the entire driving task without supervision. NHTSA’s crash-reporting announcement similarly explains that Level 2 driver-assistance systems can combine functions such as lane centering and adaptive cruise control, while still requiring drivers to remain engaged and alert. What NHTSA is investigating—and what it does not prove
Reduced visibility: PE24031, upgraded to EA26002
NHTSA opened preliminary evaluation PE24031 on October 17, 2024, to examine FSD’s ability to detect and respond to reduced roadway visibility, including glare and airborne obscurants, and crashes reported in those conditions. The agency’s record discusses Tesla’s transition to a vision-only perception system and its approach to detecting degraded performance. It reports concern that the system might not detect or warn appropriately when camera performance is significantly degraded, and says the investigation was upgraded to engineering analysis EA26002. This is broader safety context; it does not identify the cause of the Reddit-posted crash. Read the PE24031 investigation record.

Traffic-signal and lane behavior: PE25012
A separate NHTSA record, PE25012, describes complaints and crash reports alleging traffic-signal and lane behavior while FSD was engaged, including reports of vehicles entering opposing lanes. NHTSA’s reporting order covers specified crashes on public roads involving vehicles equipped with certain driver-assistance or automated-driving systems. Reportable outcomes include specified injuries or fatalities, a tow-away, airbag deployment, or involvement of a vulnerable road user. The order is intended to help the agency identify potential safety issues; a crash report alone does not establish that an assistance system caused the crash. There is no incident-specific crash count, rate or injury figure established by the material available for this post. Tesla’s safety report describes the company’s methodology for calculating U.S. baselines using federal data and additional estimates, but that methodology does not independently verify what happened in this particular event.
