The car was a Dallara Super Formula SF23—not a Formula 1 championship car—and the available account does not include telemetry or an official investigation explaining why the turn came too soon.
What happened at the autonomous race event?
Victor Tangermann’s April 29, 2024 report for Futurism says an autonomous car struck a wall after turning too early. The report also describes other cars spinning or running off track. It presents a rough early demonstration, not a controlled safety study.
Automotive journalist Tim Stevens separately described a four-car circuit race in a Threads post, as reproduced by Futurism. Stevens said the leading Polimove car spun, another car passed it, officials showed a yellow flag, and the remaining cars appeared confused about passing before the race stalled. That is Stevens’s account, not an official event finding.
Why did the car hit the wall?
The report’s explanation is limited to the car turning too early. It does not provide telemetry, a software diagnosis, or an official incident investigation. Without those details, it is not possible to say whether the immediate cause involved perception, planning, control, or another factor.

Were these Formula 1 cars?
No. The headline description “Formula 1 car” is imprecise: Futurism identifies the vehicles as Dallara Super Formula SF23 machines and describes the event as Formula 1-style. The report does not identify them as cars competing in the Formula 1 championship.
According to Futurism, eight teams competed at the purpose-built Yas Marina Circuit using identical cars, while supplying their own software engineers and AI algorithms. The outlet reported that the cars had seven Sony cameras providing a 360-degree view from the cockpit area and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines producing around 550 horsepower. Those equipment and engine details are attributed to Futurism; they were not independently confirmed against Dallara or the event organizer in the available reporting.

What does the incident show about autonomous racing?
It shows that the reported event included significant execution problems, but it does not establish a general measure of autonomous-vehicle safety or capability. A race car on a circuit operates in a different setting from a road-going self-driving vehicle, and the report does not describe a controlled protocol that would let readers treat the event as a safety test.
The cars were described as identical, but each team brought its own software team. The reporting provides no team-by-team results sufficient to rank their systems or isolate which approach performed best.

What did the event’s technical director predict?
Futurism quotes Giovanni Pau, identified as technical director of the Autonomous Robotics Research Center, telling The Race: “Look at it in a year, or a year and a half from now,” and “I’m not sure it will be the same.” This is a prediction about possible future progress, not evidence that performance improved on that schedule.

The available reporting does not include an official organizer or manufacturer confirmation of the crash details, a formal investigation, or a later performance dataset. The account therefore supports a narrow conclusion: a secondary news report said a car hit a wall after turning too early, but the technical cause and broader implications remain unverified.
