Fortune reported that Ottmann confirmed his termination to The New York Times, but neither Fortune nor Gizmodo reported a reason from Tesla. The available accounts establish the sequence of events—not that the criticism caused the firing.
Who was the Tesla manager?
Fortune described Jared Ottmann as an electric-vehicle battery-pack engineering manager who had worked at Tesla for nearly seven years. He became part of the story after publicly criticizing Musk’s jokes about Nazi leaders and the company’s silence in response.
What happened before Ottmann was fired?
Musk’s January 2025 gesture and jokes
On January 20, 2025, Musk made a gesture at Donald Trump’s inauguration that contemporary reports characterized as Nazi-style or as a stiff, right-armed salute. That description comes from the reporting; it does not establish Musk’s intent. Three days later, Musk posted jokes playing on the names of Nazi leaders Heinrich Himmler and Joseph Goebbels. Fortune described the posts as making light of criticism of his gesture.
Ottmann’s public criticism and reported internal complaints
Ottmann criticized Musk’s post on LinkedIn. Fortune reproduced his description of the joke as naming “genocidal a—holes” and his question, “What’s a mensch to do?” It also quoted him saying, “The silence from Tesla is deafening.” Fortune reported that he said the post had 308,000 likes; that was a time-specific figure in Ottmann’s post, not an independently audited count.

The reports differ on the history of Ottmann’s internal complaints. Fortune said he raised concerns with human resources, compliance and investor relations during the preceding week. Gizmodo said his LinkedIn post referred to concerns raised since 2022 with managers, human resources, legal compliance and investor relations. Those accounts should not be combined into a single definitive chronology.
What is known about the firing—and what is not?
Fortune reported that Ottmann’s employment ended within days of his LinkedIn post and that he confirmed his termination to The New York Times. Fortune also reported that he said private messages of support followed his complaints, but corporate action did not.

The reviewed reports do not give Tesla’s stated reason for ending his employment. Fortune relayed Ottmann’s confirmation through its account of The New York Times; Gizmodo also cited the Times. Neither report establishes a termination letter, Tesla’s motive, or whether Ottmann brought a legal claim. The close timing is part of the reporting, but by itself it does not prove that his criticism caused the firing.
How did Tesla and the ADL respond?
Gizmodo reported that Tesla did not respond to its request for comment. The reviewed coverage does not provide a public explanation from Tesla for Ottmann’s termination.

Fortune reported that Anti-Defamation League chief executive Jonathan Greenblatt criticized Musk’s jokes. The ADL statement, reproduced by Fortune, said: “Making inappropriate and highly offensive jokes that trivialize the Holocaust only serve to minimize the evil and inhumanity of Nazi crimes, denigrate the suffering of both victims and survivors and insult the memory of the six million Jews murdered in the Shoah.”
