Tesla did not publish a complete list of affected employees, a global department-by-department reduction table, or a definition of how it assessed individual performance. A report published by TechCrunch on April 16 said Tesla management described the layoffs as largely connected to poor financial performance. People familiar with the cuts told the publication that some departments were reduced by about 20% and that high-performing employees were among those laid off.
That distinction matters. The available reporting does not show that Tesla publicly ranked its employees and then eliminated a specific performance category. It also does not establish that every department lost 20% of its staff. The evidence supports the narrower conclusion that sources reported reductions of approximately that size in some departments and said that strong performers were affected.

Tesla reported a year-over-year decline in vehicle deliveries for the first quarter of 2024. At the same time, the company had reduced prices on some vehicles as competition increased, putting pressure on revenue and margins. The Associated Press described the layoffs as following disappointing quarterly sales, while Reuters placed the cuts in the context of weaker demand and the company’s efforts to control costs.
The business environment made the reduction broader than a conventional performance-based purge. The reported inclusion of high performers suggests that Tesla was restructuring teams and spending priorities, rather than simply removing the lowest-rated employees.
Which parts of Tesla were affected?
Reuters reported that the reductions reached Tesla’s two largest markets—the United States and China—and extended across sales, technology, and engineering. The cuts therefore reached both commercial functions and technical operations.
California records provide additional evidence of layoffs at Tesla facilities, but they should not be mistaken for a complete worldwide count. Tesla filed California WARN notices in April 2024, and later reporting on company filings described approximately 600 additional cuts across manufacturing and engineering locations in the state, including senior-level positions.
Those figures answer different questions:
- More than 10%: Tesla’s official description of the announced global headcount reduction.
- About 20%: A figure sources gave TechCrunch for some departments, not for the company as a whole.
- Approximately 600 in California: A later filing-based figure reported for particular California manufacturing and engineering locations, not the full U.S. or global total.
WARN notices also have limits. They cover legally defined layoffs that meet applicable reporting thresholds and do not necessarily capture every termination, voluntary departure, contractor reduction, international layoff, or other change in staffing.

Two senior executives also left
The workforce reduction coincided with the departure of two prominent executives.
Tesla’s Form 8-K confirmed Baglino’s departure. He had been one of the company’s most senior engineering leaders and was closely associated with Tesla’s powertrain and energy operations.
TechCrunch and the Associated Press also reported that Rohan Patel left Tesla at roughly the same time. Patel was associated with public policy and business development. His departure, alongside Baglino’s, made the April 2024 event a leadership change as well as a headcount reduction.
What remains unknown
The public record does not answer several important questions:
- How many employees were ultimately affected worldwide?
- Which departments experienced reductions of approximately 20%?
- How did Tesla define “high performer” during the restructuring?
- How many employees described as high performers lost their jobs?
- How many reductions involved employees, contractors, voluntary departures, or positions left unfilled?
Those gaps make it inappropriate to describe the event as a documented purge of Tesla’s best employees. The more accurate account is that Tesla announced a global reduction exceeding 10%, while sources reported that some teams were cut by roughly one-fifth and that high-performing employees were not exempt.

That is general information, not a conclusion that Tesla violated employment law; the answer can depend on the employee’s location, job classification, notice documents, and circumstances.
