The Tesla hazardous-waste case matching this headline was a California prosecutor-led enforcement action announced as settled on February 2, 2024—not a newly verified 2026 lawsuit. Prosecutors alleged that Tesla improperly handled and disposed of hazardous waste at company facilities. The settlement totaled $1.5 million and included employee training and third-party audits; it resolved the matter without establishing that every allegation was proven.
What did prosecutors allege?
A complaint filed in San Joaquin County accused Tesla of violating California rules for controlling, storing, managing and disposing of hazardous waste generated through vehicle servicing and manufacturing. The allegations involved Tesla service centers, energy facilities and a factory. They were claims in an enforcement action, not findings that each alleged violation had been proven.
Prosecutors cited examples of waste they said was at issue, including:
- Lubricating oils, brake cleaners and antifreeze
- Lead-acid and other batteries, plus aerosols
- Solvents, cleaners and electronic waste
- Paint waste and contaminated debris
How did the investigation proceed?
The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office said the prosecutor-led investigation began in 2018. Inspectors examined trash containers at Tesla service centers, according to the announcement. District attorneys representing 25 California counties participated in the enforcement action.

What did the 2024 settlement require?
On February 2, 2024, the San Joaquin and Orange County district attorneys’ offices announced a settlement totaling $1.5 million. The stated amount comprised $1.3 million in civil penalties and $200,000 to cover investigation costs. The announced terms also required employee training and third-party audits of waste disposal.
A settlement resolves an enforcement matter; it is not the same as a court ruling that every allegation was true. The figures and terms above describe this 2024 case.
