Musk announced the switch on January 14, 2026, the outright-sale option ended February 14, and Tesla’s limited transfer promotion closed March 31. Tesla now lists FSD (Supervised) at $99 per month in the United States.
Some owners who purchased FSD outright may therefore have a vehicle-level advantage when selling—but subscriptions, transfer rights, and future autonomy are separate issues.

Tesla’s one-time Full Self-Driving purchase option is no longer available to new U.S. buyers. Elon Musk announced the change on January 14, 2026; Tesla ended new outright FSD purchases on February 14. As of August 12, 2026, Tesla’s U.S. support documentation lists Full Self-Driving (Supervised) only as a $99-per-month subscription.
That change may give some existing owners a meaningful vehicle-level advantage. A Tesla with FSD that was purchased outright may retain the package when the car is sold, allowing the next owner to use the included capability without taking out a new $99 monthly subscription. But this does not apply to every Tesla owner, does not guarantee a resale premium, and does not give the owner a right to move FSD to another Tesla. Tesla’s limited FSD Transfer Program ended on March 31, 2026.

What Tesla changed—and the dates that matter
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| January 14, 2026 | Elon Musk announced that Tesla would stop selling FSD outright and move to a subscription-only model. |
| February 14, 2026 | The one-time FSD purchase option ended for new purchases in the United States, according to contemporaneous reporting and Tesla’s subsequent support information. |
| March 31, 2026 | Tesla’s limited FSD Transfer Program ended. Some customers who took delivery of a new Tesla by that date may have qualified to move FSD from an existing vehicle, but the promotion is closed. |
| August 12, 2026 | Tesla’s current U.S. support position lists FSD (Supervised) at $99 per month and says it is available only through a subscription. |
The important distinction is between changing how new customers obtain FSD and removing FSD from vehicles that already have an outright-purchased package. Those are not the same thing. Tesla’s stated rules indicate that an outright-purchased package can remain associated with the vehicle, subject to the vehicle’s purchase history, account records, hardware, software, and regional availability.
Why some older Teslas may now be more attractive
Tesla distinguishes between a package purchased for the vehicle and access activated through a monthly subscription. That distinction becomes important when the car changes hands.
| How FSD was obtained | What a buyer should generally expect |
|---|---|
| FSD purchased outright and not transferred | Tesla says the buyer receives the vehicle with FSD. The package is treated as associated with the vehicle rather than as an active subscription belonging to the seller. |
| FSD activated through the seller’s subscription | The subscription is not a transferable asset. The buyer must subscribe through the buyer’s own Tesla Account. |
| FSD moved under Tesla’s 2026 transfer promotion | The promotion is closed. Do not assume a transfer right exists for a current purchase. |
| FSD obtained through a promotion or Luxe Package | Verify the exact package and its terms. Tesla’s support documentation indicates that purchase history can produce different outcomes. |
This creates a potential advantage for an owner selling a Tesla with a valid, outright-purchased FSD package. A comparable Tesla without the package gives its new owner only the option to pay $99 per month, assuming the feature is available for that vehicle and region. A vehicle that already includes the package may therefore be more appealing to a buyer who intends to use FSD for years.
That is an economic inference—not a guaranteed market rule. Tesla does not promise a particular resale premium for FSD, and buyers may value the package differently. Mileage, battery condition, accident history, warranty status, hardware generation, software support, model year, and local demand can outweigh the value of the driver-assistance package.
The advantage is vehicle-level access, not guaranteed transfer
The phrase “current owners have an advantage” can be misleading unless it is carefully limited. The strongest defensible advantage is this:
Some owners who purchased FSD outright may own a Tesla that carries access a future buyer can use without paying the current monthly subscription.
That does not mean the owner can automatically transfer FSD to a replacement vehicle. Tesla’s limited transfer promotion ended March 31, 2026, and the promotion cannot be treated as an ongoing general benefit. Tesla also says FSD cannot currently be transferred to another account or vehicle under that program.

In practical terms, an owner selling an older FSD-equipped Tesla may be able to pass along the vehicle’s included package, while an owner replacing that Tesla with a new one cannot assume the package follows them. Anyone considering a trade-in, private sale, or replacement should confirm the current terms with Tesla before assigning value to FSD.
How to verify FSD on a used Tesla
Do not rely on a listing title, a seller’s verbal claim, or a screenshot showing that FSD was recently active. The buyer needs to establish whether the vehicle has an outright-purchased package or merely had subscription access.
- Open the vehicle’s software screen. Ask the seller to show
Controls > Softwareon the Tesla’s center display. Tesla directs owners to this screen to identify whether the vehicle lists Full Self-Driving Capability. - Look for the exact package wording. A listing that says “FSD,” “FSD capable,” or “autopilot included” may not explain whether the package was purchased outright, included in a promotion, or activated through a subscription.
- Ask how the package was obtained. Request the purchase history, original order documentation, or Tesla account information that establishes whether FSD was bought outright. Treat a subscription as temporary access tied to the seller’s account.
- Confirm that the package was not transferred. An outright purchase that was moved to another vehicle may no longer remain on the Tesla being sold. The 2026 transfer promotion is closed, so any claimed transfer exception should be confirmed directly with Tesla.
- Check the vehicle’s hardware and software. Tesla says feature availability can vary by vehicle configuration, hardware, software version, region, model, trim, and model year. Having a package listed does not mean every FSD function is available in every location or on every Tesla.
- Get the status confirmed before paying more. If FSD is part of the negotiated price, make the package status a documented condition of the transaction. A seller’s subscription should not be valued as though it were permanent vehicle equipment.
If you are shopping for a used Tesla with verified Full Self-Driving Capability, compare the vehicle’s documented package status with the price difference against a similar Tesla without it. The word “verified” matters: a listing description alone is not enough to establish that an outright-purchased package will remain available after delivery.
Red flags in a used-car listing
- “FSD available” without a screenshot of
Controls > Software. - “FSD included” where the seller cannot explain whether it was purchased or subscribed to.
- A claim that FSD will transfer to the buyer’s Tesla Account.
- A claim that Tesla will transfer FSD to a replacement vehicle because the seller is an existing owner.
- A price premium based on future unsupervised autonomy rather than the vehicle’s current documented features.
What $99 per month costs over time
At Tesla’s current U.S. subscription price, the basic arithmetic looks like this:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Ownership period | Subscription cost at $99/month |
|---|---|
| One month | $99 |
| One year | $1,188 |
| Five years | $5,940 |
Reports surrounding Musk’s January announcement described the previous U.S. one-time FSD price as approximately $8,000. Dividing that historical price by $99 produces a simple break-even point of about 80.8 months, or 6.7 years.
That calculation is only an illustration. It does not account for:
- future subscription-price changes;
- taxes or financing costs;
- resale value;
- the possibility of selling or replacing the vehicle;
- months when the owner does not use FSD;
- changes to feature availability;
- differences between a specific vehicle’s hardware and Tesla’s current software requirements.
For a short-term owner or an occasional user, the subscription may cost less than an $8,000 purchase simply because the owner is not paying for years of unused access. For a long-term owner who uses the system continuously, a vehicle with an existing outright-purchased package could be financially attractive—provided the package is genuinely attached to the vehicle and the car itself is worth buying.

Tesla also documents an official one-month FSD (Supervised) gift card option. That is a way to consider a limited period of access before committing to ongoing use, but it is not the same as permanent vehicle-level FSD. Availability and terms should be checked with Tesla at the time of purchase.
FSD is still supervised driver assistance
The commercial change should not be confused with a change in Tesla’s technical or legal description of the system. Tesla currently calls the product Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Tesla says it can perform tasks including lane changes, route following, turns, intersection navigation, and parking assistance, but it requires an attentive driver and does not make the vehicle autonomous.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration likewise distinguishes driver-assistance systems from fully automated vehicles and says currently available automated features are not fully automated. The driver remains responsible for monitoring the road, the vehicle, and the system’s actions.
Therefore, buying a used Tesla with an outright-purchased FSD package does not guarantee future unsupervised driving. It does not guarantee that Tesla will enable every future capability on that vehicle, either. Hardware, software, geography, regulation, and Tesla’s product decisions can all affect what the vehicle can do.
How Tesla’s safety comparisons should be read
Tesla publishes a Vehicle Safety Report that includes comparisons involving vehicles operating with and without FSD. Those figures require careful interpretation. Tesla’s methodology counts a collision as occurring with FSD engaged when FSD was active at any point within five seconds before the collision event.
Recommended Free Tools
That is a company-reported comparison, not an independently validated causal finding. It does not by itself prove that FSD caused or prevented a particular collision, and it should not be used as a reason to treat the system as autonomous. Driver behavior, road type, weather, vehicle choice, supervision, and other factors can affect comparisons.
Who benefits—and who should be cautious?
If you already purchased FSD outright
Check the vehicle’s current software screen and purchase records. The package may make the vehicle more attractive to a future buyer, but do not assume it can be transferred to your next Tesla. If you are selling, document exactly what Tesla shows as included with the vehicle.

If you only subscribe to FSD
Do not describe the subscription as a permanent feature of the car. A buyer of the vehicle will generally need to subscribe through the buyer’s own Tesla Account.
If you are buying used
Value FSD only after verifying the package, its purchase history, and the vehicle’s hardware and regional eligibility. A Tesla without included FSD may still be the better deal if the seller is demanding a large premium for a package you will rarely use.
If you plan to replace your Tesla
Assume that FSD stays with the current vehicle unless Tesla confirms otherwise for your exact transaction. The March 31, 2026 transfer-program deadline has passed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bottom line
Tesla has moved new U.S. FSD access from an outright purchase to a $99-per-month subscription. That makes some older Teslas with legitimately purchased, vehicle-level FSD more valuable in comparison with otherwise similar cars that offer only subscription access. The advantage is real enough to verify—but too conditional to justify a blanket claim that every current owner has a rare asset.
Before paying a premium, confirm the vehicle’s Controls > Software screen, establish whether FSD was purchased or merely subscribed to, check the vehicle’s hardware and region, and ignore claims about automatic transfer or future autonomy unless Tesla confirms them in writing.

Does FSD stay with a Tesla when it is sold?
Possibly. If FSD was purchased outright and remains associated with the vehicle, Tesla says the buyer receives the vehicle with FSD. If the seller only subscribed, the buyer must subscribe through the buyer’s own Tesla Account.
Can I transfer FSD to my next Tesla?
No. Tesla’s limited FSD Transfer Program ended March 31, 2026. Owners should not assume they can move an older vehicle’s FSD package to a replacement Tesla.
How much does Tesla FSD cost over several years?
At $99 per month, the subscription costs $1,188 for one year and $5,940 for five years, before taxes or price changes. Compared with the historically reported $8,000 purchase price, the simple break-even point was about 80.8 months, or 6.7 years.
How can I verify FSD on a used Tesla?
Ask the seller to show the vehicle’s Controls > Software screen, confirm that Full Self-Driving Capability is listed, establish whether it was purchased outright or obtained through a subscription or promotion, and verify the vehicle’s hardware, software, region, and model-year eligibility.
Is Tesla FSD autonomous?
No. Tesla describes the product as Full Self-Driving (Supervised), and both Tesla and NHTSA state that currently available systems require driver supervision and are not fully automated.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Some Tesla owners who purchased FSD outright may now have a vehicle-level benefit that new buyers can obtain only through a $99-per-month subscription. But subscriptions do not transfer, Tesla’s transfer promotion ended March 31, 2026, and no resale premium or future autonomous capability is guaranteed. Verify the exact vehicle record before treating FSD as part of the car’s value.
