The company’s headline product is a geared, in-wheel electric powertrain designed as a “drop-in” replacement for certain existing hub-motor systems. But Conifer is not primarily launching a consumer e-bike brand. Its larger ambition is to supply configurable electric motors and powertrains to vehicle manufacturers, equipment makers, HVAC companies, robotics firms, and other industrial customers.

That distinction matters. The funding is best understood as a commercialization bet on a rare-earth-free motor architecture and a software-oriented manufacturing process—not as the announcement of a motor that consumers can immediately buy for a passenger car or from Amazon.

Who invested in Conifer’s $20 million seed round?

TechCrunch reported that True Ventures, MaC Ventures, MFV Partners, and other deep-tech investors participated in the round. True Ventures partner Rohit Sharma joined Conifer’s board.

Conifer’s funding announcement also identified Voyager, Z21 Ventures, Silicon Valley Bank, and Higher Life Ventures among the participating investors. The investor group is consistent with a hardware and industrial-technology thesis: Conifer needs to develop physical products, manufacturing capability, and OEM relationships rather than simply scale a software application.

The company’s co-founders are Ankit Somani and Yateendra Deshpande. Conifer describes Somani’s background as including research and development work at Google data centers, while Deshpande’s experience includes powertrain work at Lucid and Apple, doctoral motor research, and teaching. MaC VC lists Somani as Conifer’s CEO.

What is Conifer’s “drop-in” electric hub motor?

Conifer describes its core platform as a compact axial-flux motor and powertrain system. Its initial mobility product is a geared in-wheel unit intended to fit into existing small-vehicle designs with less drivetrain re-engineering than a completely new propulsion system would require.

The company says its target applications include two-, three-, and four-wheel vehicles. TechCrunch also reported interest from lawnmower, tractor, and HVAC manufacturers. That points to a market covering electric scooters, utility vehicles, compact work equipment, and other machines where packaging and integration may matter more than the extreme power density demanded by a full-size passenger vehicle.

Conifer’s current published in-wheel specifications include:

  • Peak power: 2.5 kW, 5.5 kW, and 9 kW configurations
  • Peak torque: 120 to 190 Nm, depending on configuration
  • Wheel compatibility: a claimed range from 10-inch to 24-inch wheels
  • Range improvement: a company-claimed 15 percent increase

Those are published specifications and claims from Conifer, not independent comparative test results. The “drop-in” label should also be read as an integration goal, not a guarantee that every vehicle can accept the motor without changes. A real installation can still require compatible electronics, mounting hardware, brakes, wheel dimensions, suspension clearance, battery voltage, thermal management, and vehicle-control software.

Why Conifer is avoiding rare-earth magnets

Many high-performance permanent-magnet motors use neodymium or other rare-earth materials because they provide strong magnetic fields in a relatively compact package. The drawback is supply-chain concentration: mining, processing, and magnet production are distributed unevenly around the world, creating cost and availability risks for manufacturers.

Conifer says its motors use ferrite magnets or other abundant materials instead of relying on rare-earth magnets. Ferrite is generally less magnetically powerful than neodymium, so eliminating rare earths does not automatically make a motor more powerful, smaller, cheaper, or more efficient.

The engineering challenge is to recover system-level performance through the motor’s geometry, stator design, winding process, gearing, control software, and thermal design. In other words, the relevant comparison is not simply ferrite versus neodymium. It is the performance of the complete motor, inverter, gearbox, cooling system, and vehicle under a defined duty cycle.

Conifer presents the architecture as a way to reduce exposure to geographically concentrated materials and create a more localizable supply chain. That is a strategic advantage the company is pursuing, but its public material does not establish that its ferrite-based motors outperform every competing rare-earth motor in every application.

The manufacturing idea may be as important as the motor

Conifer’s pitch involves factory flexibility as much as motor design. The company says its manufacturing process is parameterized and software-driven, allowing one production line to make multiple motor sizes under 25 horsepower instead of requiring extensive application-specific tooling for each product.

In its funding materials, Conifer claims that its winding process can reduce winding costs by more than 90 percent and eliminate substantial stator-core scrap. Its website summarizes the broader manufacturing claims as:

  • zero rare-earth materials;
  • twice the torque per mass through its architecture and stator design; and
  • one-tenth the capital expenditure through a high-speed winding process that can support multiple SKUs on one line.

These figures are marketing claims from the company and should not be treated as independently verified benchmarks. Still, the underlying commercial logic is clear. A motor supplier that can adjust designs and produce multiple sizes on shared equipment may be able to serve moderate-volume OEM programs without building a separate factory setup for every customer.

That could be particularly useful in small mobility and industrial equipment, where customers may need application-specific packaging but may not order passenger-car-scale volumes.

Conifer is building more than a hub motor

The in-wheel powertrain is only one part of Conifer’s current product portfolio. The company’s website presents four main product groups.

High-thrust drone motors

Conifer lists 45 mm, 70 mm, and 105 mm drone-motor variants. Its published claims range from 3.8 kilograms to 40 kilograms of maximum thrust, with maximum efficiency figures from 88 percent to 93 percent.

As with the mobility specifications, the exact operating conditions, propeller combinations, test procedures, and independent validation are not provided in the public material summarized here. The figures are best used to describe the product range Conifer is presenting, not as a universal drone-performance ranking.

High-torque robot actuators

The company also lists integrated actuators for robotics. A representative actuator is specified at 7.5 Nm peak torque, 1.37 Nm rated torque, 404 watts of power, and a 77 mm outer diameter.

For robotics customers, the attraction of this kind of product is packaging: combining motor, gearing, sensing, and control functions into a compact actuator can simplify the design of a robot joint. Actual suitability would depend on continuous-duty performance, thermal limits, backlash, service life, control interfaces, and safety requirements.

NEMA EC motors for HVAC and industry

Conifer’s stationary-motor portfolio includes NEMA EC motors aimed at HVAC and pumping, industrial automation, robotics, and medical equipment. A separate NEMA product page lists 1.5-horsepower, 5-horsepower, and 10-horsepower examples.

The company describes these motors as compatible with NEMA or IEC-frame mounting and lists 230/460-volt operation, IP55 protection, and PMSM-compatible variable-frequency-drive operation. The displayed examples carry claimed efficiencies ranging from 87.8 percent to 92.4 percent.

Conifer says the motors can fit existing frame or foot-mounting arrangements. That is another version of its drop-in strategy: rather than requiring an entire machine redesign, the motor is intended to occupy a familiar mechanical envelope. The published product positioning includes claims of reduced length and weight and IE8 efficiency positioning, but independent comparisons and full operating conditions are not included in the available public information.

Companies evaluating this part of the portfolio can look at the Conifer NEMA EC motors product line as a potential direct commercial or engineering lead. It should not be confused with a verified affiliate offer or a retail product recommendation.

What evidence exists that Conifer is ready for production?

Conifer’s funding announcement says the new capital will support production units for customers and expansion into stationary motor markets. Its current website reports more than 10 customers, annual capacity of 70,000 units, and 15,000 kilometers of customer field testing.

Those figures are reported by Conifer. The public page does not identify all of the customers or publish test protocols, comparative baselines, failure rates, warranty data, or independently audited results. A careful description is therefore that the company says it has more than 10 customers and reports 15,000 kilometers of field testing—not that those numbers independently prove commercial maturity.

The company also promotes a Conifer pilot program for stationary applications. It invites companies to evaluate its EC motors in their own operating environments, work directly with Conifer engineers, and potentially receive priority for future partnerships. The public information does not establish that the program is paid, affiliate-enabled, or open to individual consumers. It is a possible B2B route for HVAC, pumping, industrial, and equipment companies—not a consumer referral scheme.

Why use an in-wheel motor—and what are the trade-offs?

Hub motors can simplify a vehicle by putting propulsion at the wheel. Depending on the design, that can reduce or eliminate conventional drivetrain components such as axles, differentials, and some transmission hardware. It can also create more flexibility in vehicle packaging.

In-wheel designs are not automatically better, however. Engineers must consider:

  • Unsprung mass: placing the motor in the wheel can affect suspension response and ride quality.
  • Thermal management: the motor must reject heat in a compact, exposed location while meeting the vehicle’s duty cycle.
  • Wheel-size constraints: the motor, gearing, brakes, and wheel must fit together without compromising clearance.
  • Braking integration: mechanical and regenerative braking systems must work together safely.
  • Serviceability: a wheel-mounted powertrain can change how tires, brakes, suspension, and motor components are accessed.
  • Environmental exposure: sealing, impact protection, water resistance, and corrosion resistance matter in outdoor equipment.

Conifer’s public materials emphasize integration simplicity, range, and supply-chain resilience. Independent head-to-head testing against other hub motors or conventional drivetrains was not located in the available research, so the company’s claims should remain clearly attributed.

Is Conifer’s motor available as an e-bike conversion kit?

Not based on the public information reviewed for this article. Conifer’s product is positioned primarily for OEM specification and industrial integration, not as a confirmed retail kit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For readers trying to understand the consumer category that is closest to the technology Conifer is targeting, an electric bike hub motor conversion kit is the mainstream retail comparison. These kits typically combine a wheel containing a hub motor with a controller, wiring, display, and sometimes a battery or brake sensors. They can help explain the basic appeal of wheel-integrated propulsion, but a consumer conversion kit is not the same product as Conifer’s OEM powertrain and should not be presented as a Conifer motor.

That distinction is especially important for buyers: there is no evidence here that Conifer sells its motors through Amazon, that a generic e-bike kit uses Conifer technology, or that a retail conversion kit offers the same power, durability, controls, or integration characteristics as an industrial product.

What Conifer’s funding means for the electric-mobility market

The round gives Conifer room to cross the difficult gap between an interesting motor design and repeatable production. The next milestones to watch are production deliveries, named OEM customers, independently documented test results, field reliability, manufacturing yield, and evidence that the claimed cost and capital advantages hold at scale.

The company’s opportunity is probably narrower—and more credible—than a claim to reinvent every electric vehicle. Small electric vehicles, lawn equipment, tractors, drones, robots, HVAC systems, and industrial machines can have different priorities from passenger cars. A buyer in those markets may value easier integration, moderate-volume customization, motor efficiency, and reduced material risk more than maximum power density.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Conifer’s broader platform also creates a strategic question: can one manufacturing and software approach serve such different products as drone motors, robotic actuators, in-wheel powertrains, and NEMA-frame industrial motors without sacrificing application-specific performance? The $20 million round is intended to help answer that question commercially.

Bottom line

Conifer’s April 14, 2025, seed round is a bet on a less visible but important part of electrification: configurable motors for smaller vehicles and industrial systems.

The company says its axial-flux architecture, ferrite-based or otherwise rare-earth-free materials, modular powertrain design, and software-driven manufacturing can deliver a practical alternative to conventional motor platforms. Its published portfolio extends from geared in-wheel systems to drone motors, robot actuators, and NEMA EC motors for HVAC and industrial equipment.

Those claims still need to be measured against transparent, independent data. For now, the most accurate description is that Conifer is an OEM and industrial powertrain startup moving toward production—not a passenger-car supplier and not a consumer e-bike-kit brand.
