Yes. Tesla has ended production of both the Model S and Model X. Elon Musk announced the wind-down on January 28, 2026; Tesla stopped accepting custom orders before the final build, and the company confirmed on May 10 that the last cars had left its Fremont, California, factory. Tesla’s current product pages now label both vehicles no longer in production.

That does not mean existing Model S and Model X vehicles have suddenly lost warranty coverage, service, software, or Supercharger access. It means that Tesla is no longer building new examples. Depending on country and configuration, a limited number of new inventory, demonstration, or pre-owned vehicles may still be available—but there is no normal factory-order program and Tesla has announced no direct successor.

The short version: production is over, ownership support is not

Question Current answer as of August 10, 2026
Has Tesla ended production? Yes. The final Model S and Model X vehicles were produced at Fremont in May 2026.
Can you place a normal custom order? No. Custom orders ended before final production.
Can you still buy a new one? Possibly, but only from remaining inventory or a demo vehicle. Availability is market-specific and changes quickly.
Can you buy one used? Yes, through Tesla’s pre-owned marketplace and independent sellers.
Will Tesla still service existing cars? Yes. Tesla continues to publish warranty, repair, maintenance, recall, and owner-support information for both models.
Is there a direct replacement? No direct Model S or Model X successor has been announced.

The important distinction is between ending a vehicle program and abandoning the vehicles already on the road. Tesla has done the former, not the latter.

What exactly did Tesla discontinue?

Several events that are often described as “the Model S and Model X being discontinued” happened at different times:

  • Production ended: Tesla no longer manufactures either model at Fremont.
  • Custom orders ended: Buyers can no longer configure a new car and send that order into a continuing production queue.
  • Inventory sales may continue temporarily: Completed vehicles can remain available after production stops. The number and configuration of those vehicles depends on country, state, delivery location, and whether a vehicle is new, a demo, or pre-owned.
  • Used sales continue: Owners and dealers can continue selling existing Model S and Model X vehicles.
  • Support continues: Warranty, service, software, recall, and charging systems do not automatically end when the factory line closes.
  • The nameplates have no announced successor: Tesla has not announced a new full-size luxury sedan to replace Model S or a three-row flagship SUV to replace Model X.

Tesla’s Model S page and Model X page still display information about the vehicles and may direct shoppers to inventory or pre-owned listings. That should not be confused with an active factory-order program.

Shutdown timeline

Date What happened Why it matters
January 28, 2026 Elon Musk announced during Tesla’s fourth-quarter 2025 earnings call that the company would wind down and stop Model S and Model X production in the following quarter. This was the announcement of the plan, not the date production ended. TechCrunch reported on the earnings-call announcement.
January 28, 2026 Tesla’s 2025 delivery figures grouped Model S and Model X into a broad Other Models category alongside other vehicles. The report does not provide an exact Model S/X sales total.
March 31–April 1, 2026 Reports said Tesla had stopped accepting custom orders and that only completed inventory remained. At this point, a shopper might still find a new car, but could no longer order a preferred configuration from the factory. Electrek covered the inventory-only phase.
May 9, 2026 Automotive reports said the final vehicles left the Fremont production line. This is the reported final-build date, rather than Tesla’s formal confirmation date. Car and Driver reported on the final production.
May 10, 2026 Tesla officially confirmed that the last Model S and Model X vehicles had been produced at Fremont. This is the clearest official confirmation that production had ended. Tesla’s official post is available here.
August 10, 2026 Tesla’s current product pages describe both vehicles as no longer in production. This is the current shopping status: no normal custom ordering, although remaining inventory or used vehicles may still appear.

This sequence explains why an older headline saying Tesla “will kill off” the models may now be stale. The announcement was in January, the order cutoff came later, and the actual production shutdown was confirmed in May.

Why did Tesla end the Model S and Model X?

Tesla’s stated reason: autonomy, AI, and Optimus

Musk described the decision as part of Tesla’s move away from conventional vehicle manufacturing and toward autonomy. He characterized the retirement as an “honorable discharge” and said the Fremont space used for Model S and Model X would be repurposed for production of Optimus humanoid robots.

Tesla’s stated strategic priorities now include:

  • Autonomous driving and robotaxi services.
  • Artificial-intelligence development.
  • Fleet-based transportation services.
  • Optimus humanoid robots.

Musk has discussed a long-term ambition of producing up to one million Optimus robots annually in the repurposed space. That is a forward-looking company target, not an achieved production result. The company’s official fourth-quarter 2025 webcast and its 2025 Form 10-K provide the broader context for Tesla’s autonomy and robotics strategy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optimus is not a vehicle replacement for either model. It replaces the intended use of part of the factory space, not the Model S’s luxury liftback-sedan role or the Model X’s three-row SUV role.

The commercial context is just as important

Tesla’s high-volume business is overwhelmingly concentrated in the Model 3 and Model Y. In 2025, Tesla reported 1,585,279 Model 3/Y deliveries compared with 50,850 vehicles in the combined Other Models category. That category included more than Model S and Model X—such as Cybertruck and other products—so 50,850 is not an exact S/X sales figure.

Tesla stopped reporting Model S and Model X separately, making precise recent sales impossible to determine from the company’s official delivery releases. The broader reporting category combines the two flagships with other vehicles, as discussed in TechCrunch’s analysis of the final days. The relevant conclusion is not that Tesla sold exactly 50,850 Model S/X vehicles. It is that the combined group had become small compared with Model 3/Y.

That is a dramatic change from the models’ earlier position. The combined Model S and Model X line once delivered roughly 100,000 vehicles annually, and Tesla reported record combined quarterly deliveries in 2017. Tesla’s 2017 delivery report illustrates how much more significant the two nameplates were during Tesla’s earlier growth phase.

The Model S and Model X were also expensive, low-volume vehicles competing in crowded premium segments. Tesla’s 2025 filing describes Model S and Model X as competing primarily with premium sedans and premium SUVs, while Model 3 and Model Y address smaller and more mainstream segments.

The most defensible explanation is a combination of factors

  1. Low strategic importance in Tesla’s sales mix: The flagship models no longer drove volume comparable to Model 3 and Model Y.
  2. Older product programs: Both lines had been on the market for many years, and Tesla had not announced a clean-sheet successor.
  3. Factory and capital allocation: Ending low-volume production frees space and manufacturing attention for Tesla’s other priorities.
  4. Luxury-market pressure: Buyers now have more premium electric sedans and SUVs to choose from, including newer products from Lucid, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Rivian, Kia, and Hyundai.
  5. Strategic conviction: Tesla believes autonomy, fleet services, software, and robotics could offer more growth than another conventional luxury vehicle generation.

The first four points are supported by observable sales, product, and market context. Whether Optimus or robotaxis will ultimately be more profitable or strategically superior remains an unproven Tesla thesis.

The strange timing: Tesla refreshed both cars before ending them

The shutdown can feel abrupt because Tesla updated the Model S and Model X shortly before ending the programs. Tesla’s 2025–2026 refresh announcement described improvements including:

  • Quieter cabins and revised insulation.
  • Updated noise reduction.
  • New wheel designs.
  • Interior ambient lighting.
  • A revised user interface.
  • A front-fascia camera.
  • A blind-spot indicator.
  • Adaptive headlights.
  • Revised tires and aerodynamic improvements.
  • More consistent performance in hot and cold conditions.
  • Additional shoulder room for Model X’s third row.

This was a refresh, not a new generation. The underlying Model S and Model X programs remained long-running designs. The timing raises reasonable questions about whether Tesla intended the refresh to keep the flagships competitive temporarily, use existing parts and production plans, preserve their image as Tesla’s technological showcase, or prepare a final run before closing the line. Tesla has not publicly supplied a detailed explanation for the sequence, so it is better treated as a strategic contradiction than as proof that the refresh was pointless.

What were the final Model S and Model X like?

Tesla’s final model pages list the following headline specifications. These figures describe the final versions represented on those pages, not necessarily every 2026 vehicle remaining in inventory. Wheel choice, software, seating layout, market, and delivery date can affect the result.

Final Model S specifications

  • Dual-motor range: 410 miles EPA-estimated.
  • Dual-motor 0–60 mph: 3.1 seconds.
  • Model S Plaid 0–60 mph: 1.99 seconds.
  • Battery and drive-unit warranty: Eight years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first.

See Tesla’s final Model S product page for the equipment and availability Tesla currently lists.

Final Model X specifications

  • Dual-motor range: 352 miles EPA-estimated.
  • Dual-motor 0–60 mph: 3.8 seconds.
  • Model X Plaid 0–60 mph: 2.5 seconds.
  • Seating: Up to seven in the standard configuration, depending on interior choice.
  • Towing: Up to 5,000 pounds.
  • Battery and drive-unit warranty: Eight years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first.

See Tesla’s final Model X product page for current information. A particular remaining vehicle may not have the exact seating, wheel, or software configuration shown on the page.

What happened to the final-run Signature Edition?

Tesla’s current Model S and Model X pages confirm that a limited-release Signature Edition was used to mark the end of the two nameplates. Several automotive outlets reported that the run consisted of 250 Model S vehicles and 100 Model X vehicles, with a reported price of approximately $159,420 per vehicle and special exterior and interior treatment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those quantities and the reported price should be attributed to secondary reporting rather than treated as independently verified Tesla specifications. Reports from Jalopnik, Electrive, and Autoblog covered the final vehicles and Signature Edition details.

An invite-only delivery event associated with the final run was also reported as postponed. That event is much less important than the production fact: the cars had already been built, and Tesla had formally confirmed that the programs were over. Buyers should not assume that a final-run badge automatically makes a vehicle a collector’s car; sustained collector demand has not been established.

Can you still buy a new Model S or Model X?

Possibly, but only from remaining inventory. Tesla is no longer accepting ordinary custom orders for either vehicle. A car appearing on Tesla’s website may be a completed new vehicle, a demonstration vehicle, or a pre-owned vehicle, and availability can vary by country, state, configuration, and delivery location.

Do not treat any inventory estimate from early April as current. A third-party report estimated that roughly 600 new vehicles remained globally at that time, but inventory is a moving target and that figure is now stale. The only reliable way to establish availability is to check Tesla’s live inventory for the relevant market on a specified date.

Checklist for buying remaining inventory

Before paying a premium for a final Model S or Model X, verify the following in writing:

  1. Vehicle status: Is it genuinely new, a demo, or pre-owned?
  2. Mileage and in-service date: These can affect warranty duration even if the vehicle has never had a retail owner.
  3. Remaining warranty: Confirm the basic and battery/drive-unit coverage for that specific VIN and market.
  4. Hardware and software: Check the exact computer, cameras, sensors, connectivity hardware, and included software features.
  5. FSD status: Determine whether Full Self-Driving capability is included, transferable, trial-based, or available only through a subscription. Do not assume it transfers with the vehicle or to another Tesla.
  6. Charging benefits: Verify whether free Supercharging or another charging promotion is attached to the vehicle and whether it is transferable.
  7. Condition: Ask about prior service, paintwork, transport damage, accident history, and demonstration use.
  8. Configuration: Confirm the actual seating arrangement, wheels, interior, steering configuration, and other options rather than relying on a generic model page.
  9. Delivery costs: A scarce car located in another state or country may carry substantial transportation and registration costs.
  10. Tax treatment: Check current federal, state, or local incentive eligibility. A discontinued luxury EV may not qualify even if a different Tesla does.
  11. Price: Compare the price with equivalent used and competing luxury EVs. Scarcity can create a premium that may not survive once the initial supply is sold.

Should you rush to buy one?

There is no universal answer. A final Model S or Model X may be compelling if you specifically want a Tesla with a large liftback sedan or three-row SUV body, long range, rapid acceleration, Supercharger access, and Tesla’s software ecosystem. The final refreshed versions may also be preferable to older examples.

There are equally good reasons to wait or shop elsewhere:

  • There is no announced direct successor if you later decide you need a newer version.
  • Remaining inventory may offer little choice of color, wheels, interior, or seating.
  • Scarcity may inflate the asking price.
  • Parts for low-volume body, trim, electronics, and specialized components could eventually become more difficult or expensive to source.
  • The basic designs remain older than many newer luxury EVs.
  • Resale is uncertain. Scarcity could help select final configurations, but reduced demand or high repair costs could work in the opposite direction.

What does the shutdown mean for current owners?

Warranty coverage continues according to the vehicle’s original terms

Ending production does not cancel an existing warranty. Tesla’s current vehicle warranty information lists:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Basic vehicle warranty: Four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.
  • Model S and Model X battery and drive-unit warranty: Eight years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first.
  • Battery capacity protection: Tesla states that the battery warranty includes a minimum 70% retention threshold during the applicable warranty period.
  • Extended Service Agreement: Model S and Model X owners may be eligible, subject to Tesla’s terms and the vehicle’s history and coverage status.

Owners should rely on the warranty supplied with their particular vehicle. Coverage can vary by model year, market, original battery size, mileage, ownership history, and other conditions. Tesla’s Model S and Model X warranty document is useful, but it does not replace the terms applicable to a specific VIN.

Service and repairs continue

Tesla’s support system continues to list Model S and Model X manuals, maintenance guidance, recall information, warranty documents, and service-center repairs. Owners can use Tesla’s:

Musk also said Tesla would support existing owners “for as long as people have the vehicles.” That is a broad public commitment, not a published timetable guaranteeing that every component, feature, and software release will remain available indefinitely.

Parts are not guaranteed forever

Production ending does not mean parts disappear immediately. Tesla continues to provide service documentation and warranty information, and its propulsion-parts warranty documentation covers specified components for 2026-and-later vehicles in applicable jurisdictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

However, Tesla has not published a timetable promising indefinite availability of every body panel, trim piece, electronic module, door component, or specialized part. Low-volume vehicles can eventually face higher sourcing costs or longer waits for unusual components. The Tesla propulsion-parts warranty document should be read as a warranty document for specified parts—not as a guarantee of lifetime parts supply.

Older Model S and Model X vehicles deserve particular caution. Their risks may include aging cellular hardware, older Autopilot computers, different charging hardware, out-of-warranty battery or drive-unit repairs, and specialized components such as Model X’s falcon-wing doors. Those issues vary substantially by model year and should not be generalized from a final-year car to every Model S or Model X built since the programs began.

Software updates will continue, but hardware sets limits

Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K says the company regularly improves vehicle systems through over-the-air updates and continues developing Full Self-Driving features across its fleet. That supports the expectation of continuing software support, but it does not promise that every future feature will work on every hardware generation.

Owners should distinguish between:

  • Safety and regulatory updates.
  • Bug fixes and reliability improvements.
  • General infotainment updates.
  • FSD improvements.
  • Features that depend on newer cameras, computers, sensors, or connectivity hardware.

A discontinued model can continue receiving updates while still missing features that require hardware it does not have. FSD, Enhanced Autopilot, free Supercharging, and related benefits can also depend on the vehicle, original purchase terms, order date, transfer program, and Tesla’s current policy. Check the vehicle’s Tesla account and original order documents before assuming an entitlement transfers to a buyer or another car.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Supercharger access does not end with production

Model S and Model X owners do not lose Tesla Supercharger access simply because Tesla stopped building the vehicles. Charging access is tied to the vehicle, account, region, and applicable charging policy—not to whether the nameplate remains in production. Tesla’s Model S page and Model X page continue to list access to Tesla’s charging network.

Very early vehicles are a separate issue. Tesla says certain pre-June 2015 Model S vehicles without an LTE-capable modem can lose cellular-connected features unless upgraded or connected to Wi-Fi. That 3G/LTE retirement guidance does not mean the production shutdown removed charging access; it illustrates that aging connectivity hardware can create ownership problems independently of production status.

Is there a direct replacement?

No direct replacement has been announced as of August 10, 2026.

Model S

Tesla has not announced a conventional successor to the Model S. Its public product direction instead emphasizes Model 3 and Model Y as its core conventional cars, Cybertruck as its pickup, and Cybercab, robotaxi services, and Optimus as parts of its autonomy and robotics strategy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Model 3 is less expensive and smaller, while Model Y is a crossover rather than a full-size luxury liftback sedan. Neither is a direct Model S replacement in size, performance positioning, cabin design, or flagship status.

Model X

Tesla has also announced no vehicle that directly replaces the Model X’s combination of:

  • Three-row seating.
  • Falcon-wing doors.
  • High performance.
  • Large cargo capacity.
  • Tesla software and Supercharger access.

Model Y can cover some Tesla SUV needs, but it is not a direct substitute for the Model X in size, luxury, performance, interior packaging, or third-row space. Cybercab is a purpose-built autonomous vehicle concept and Optimus is a robot; neither fills the same customer role.

Why Tesla’s 2025 filing can look inconsistent

Tesla’s January 28, 2026 Form 10-K still described the company as manufacturing five consumer vehicles, including Model S and Model X. That filing was signed on the same day as the earnings announcement and described the company’s status before the subsequent shutdown. It should not be read as evidence that S/X production continued after May.

This is a normal complication during a product wind-down: corporate filings, investor materials, product pages, inventory systems, and factory announcements can reflect different points in time. For current availability, the later factory confirmation and current Tesla product pages are more relevant than a filing prepared before production ended.

Closest alternatives for displaced Model S shoppers

There is no single replacement because Model S buyers may prioritize range, acceleration, rear-seat comfort, charging convenience, driving dynamics, technology, or traditional luxury appointments.

  • Lucid Air: The closest conceptual rival for a long-range luxury electric sedan, with an emphasis on efficiency and range.
  • Porsche Taycan: A stronger choice for sports-car handling and driving feel, although its pricing, packaging, and ownership proposition differ from Tesla’s.
  • BMW i7: A traditional executive sedan focused on cabin luxury, rear-seat comfort, and BMW’s dealer and service infrastructure.
  • Mercedes-Benz EQS: A large luxury sedan emphasizing quietness, comfort, and conventional premium-car appointments.
  • Audi A6 e-tron: A newer premium electric sedan positioned in the same broad conversation as Model S and Lucid Air.

For a broader current comparison, see MotorTrend’s luxury flagship electric-sedan rankings and Car and Driver’s luxury electric-sedan rankings. A buyer should compare EPA range, highway range, DC fast-charging behavior, service access, warranty terms, software policy, lease pricing, and resale—not just the manufacturer’s maximum range or 0–60 figure.

Closest alternatives for displaced Model X shoppers

  • Rivian R1S: A strong alternative for three-row utility, towing, adventure use, and off-road capability.
  • BMW iX: A premium two-row SUV emphasizing comfort, quietness, and modern technology.
  • Kia EV9: A practical, family-oriented three-row electric SUV with a less performance-focused mission.
  • Hyundai Ioniq 9: A three-row electric SUV designed around family use and passenger space.
  • Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV: A large luxury SUV with a more traditional premium positioning.

See current Car and Driver electric-SUV comparisons and MotorTrend’s electric-SUV rankings. The right choice depends heavily on whether you need a genuinely usable third row, cargo room behind it, towing capacity, road-trip charging, or a more luxurious cabin.

How to compare an alternative properly

Model S and Model X shoppers should look beyond headline range and acceleration. Compare:

  • Range: Use EPA figures for U.S. comparisons and separate them from WLTP figures used in other markets.
  • Highway performance: Real-world highway range can differ substantially from the official estimate.
  • Fast charging: Look at the entire DC charging curve and charging-network reliability, not only the peak kilowatt rating.
  • Seating and cargo: For three-row SUVs, check adult comfort and cargo space with all rows occupied.
  • Driving character: Acceleration, ride comfort, steering, braking, and handling can matter more than a sub-four-second launch.
  • Driver assistance: Compare the capabilities and limitations of each system; do not treat marketing language as proof of autonomous driving.
  • Service: Check the distance to an authorized service center and the availability of independent repair support.
  • Warranty and parts: Review battery, drive-unit, basic-vehicle, corrosion, and high-voltage-component coverage.
  • Software: Determine how often updates arrive, which features are subscription-based, and which require newer hardware.
  • Economics: Compare purchase price, lease terms, insurance, depreciation, and repair costs.
  • Vehicle philosophy: Decide whether you want a conventional driver-operated luxury EV or are specifically interested in Tesla’s autonomy-focused future.

What this does—and does not—say about Tesla

Tesla is not abandoning automobiles altogether. The company continues to manufacture Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck, and other vehicle products while investing in autonomy and robotics. The narrower and better-supported conclusion is that Tesla has abandoned these two conventional flagship programs.

The Model S and Model X were important products in Tesla’s development. Model S was one of the first widely desirable, long-range premium battery-electric vehicles, and Model X extended Tesla’s approach into a high-performance SUV with distinctive doors and packaging. But their strategic importance declined as Model 3 and Model Y became the company’s volume products and as the premium EV market filled with newer competitors.

The shutdown therefore represents a reallocation of factory space and corporate attention, not the end of Tesla ownership for current drivers. For owners, the immediate issue is not whether the car will stop working because production ended; it is how warranty terms, hardware age, parts sourcing, software compatibility, and resale value will evolve over a much longer period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still order a brand-new Tesla Model S or Model X?

No normal custom-order program remains. You may still find a completed new vehicle or demonstration vehicle in Tesla inventory, depending on your market, but you cannot configure a new car for a continuing production run.

Will Tesla still service my Model S or Model X?

Yes. Tesla continues to publish warranty, maintenance, recall, manual, and service information for both models. Production ending does not cancel your vehicle’s original warranty. Long-term availability of every specialized part or future software feature is not guaranteed indefinitely.

Will Model 3, Model Y, Cybercab, or Optimus replace the Model S or Model X?

No direct replacement has been announced. Model 3 and Model Y cover smaller or more mainstream segments, Cybercab is intended for autonomous transportation, and Optimus is a robot rather than a vehicle.

Do Model S and Model X owners lose Supercharger access?

No. Ending production does not by itself remove Supercharger access. Charging eligibility depends on the vehicle, account, region, and applicable Tesla policy. Very early vehicles may have separate connectivity or hardware limitations.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Tesla has finished building the Model S and Model X, but it has not abandoned the cars already sold. New-car shoppers are limited to remaining inventory, demos, or used vehicles; owners retain their applicable warranty and service support. Tesla’s stated reason is a shift toward autonomy and Optimus, reinforced by the low volume and aging position of the two flagship programs. The trade-off is that Tesla has left a genuine gap in its conventional luxury lineup, with no direct sedan or three-row SUV successor announced.
