What drivers mean by Tesla “ghost” detection
“Phantom braking” is the term NHTSA used for consumer-described reports of unexpected brake activation. The agency’s opening document concerned allegations involving 2021–2022 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, including reports at highway speeds while adaptive cruise control was in use. Some drivers said the vehicle slowed suddenly when no obstacle appeared to be in its lane.
That description captures what drivers reported; it does not establish that the car detected a particular object, that a sensor malfunctioned, or that all reports shared one cause. “Ghost detection” is an informal label, not a diagnosis.
What NHTSA’s 2022 record says
On February 16, 2022, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened preliminary evaluation PE22-002 after receiving 354 complaints alleging unexpected braking in 2021–2022 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. Its opening resume listed an estimated population of 416,000 vehicles. That figure was an estimate of the population under evaluation—not a count of vehicles that experienced braking events.

The 354 figure is the complaint count in the opening document. It is not a verified incident rate, a live complaint total, or a finding that a defect existed. NHTSA said the evaluation would determine the scope and severity of the issue and assess potential safety concerns. The opening document does not establish the investigation’s current disposition. Why an unexpected slowdown can happen—and what remains unproven
Driver-assistance features rely on vehicle sensors and software to interpret their surroundings. Tesla’s Model S collision-avoidance manual lists conditions that may limit or interfere with those functions, including cameras or sensors that are dirty, covered, or fogged. It also notes that its list of limitations is not exhaustive.

This is general context, not a confirmed explanation for the PE22-002 reports. The cited manual is for Model S in the en-GB market; its exact wording and equipment should not be treated as applying to every Model 3 or Model Y. The available evidence does not establish that a particular bridge, shadow, sign, vehicle, software version, sensor type, or image-recognition error caused a given event. Tesla also documents that hardware and feature availability can differ by vehicle build date and geography, so a technical explanation needs to be scoped to the specific car and market.
Accordingly, the documented facts support neither a single proven technical cause nor a claim that every reported braking event was identical. They also do not establish the present status of PE22-002. NHTSA’s investigation records and safety-review resources explain how agency reviews and records are handled; consult the official record for any later status documents.

How to use Tesla driver assistance safely
Autopilot and Full Self-Driving Capability do not remove the driver’s responsibility to supervise. NHTSA says drivers using Level 2 systems must remain available to resume all aspects of the driving task if the system can no longer operate or prompts them. Tesla likewise directs owners to read the Owner’s Manual before using these features.
- Stay attentive and ready to steer, brake, or otherwise take control while driver assistance is active.
- Check the Owner’s Manual for your exact model, model year, vehicle configuration, and market; feature limits and instructions can vary.
- If you have a system concern, follow the vehicle-specific manual’s guidance and contact Tesla Service where appropriate. The cited manual does not support a universal adjustment or accessory as a fix.
