What happens in the Tesla FSD video?
Futurism’s June 10, 2024 report, by Victor Tangermann, describes a video circulating on Reddit. In the reported sequence, the driver is talking to a passenger and praising Tesla’s Full Self-Driving as the car veers left into the lane for oncoming traffic. The driver steers the car back.
The source is secondary reporting about a video, not official incident documentation. It does not identify the driver, vehicle model, location, software version, road conditions, or whether the clip is complete. It also does not establish the cause of the maneuver. The available account does not confirm a collision, injuries, or an official investigation of this specific clip.
Does Tesla Full Self-Driving mean the car drives itself?
No. Tesla calls the feature “Full Self-Driving (Supervised),” and its materials say it does not make a vehicle autonomous. Tesla’s Model S owner’s manual states: “Always remember that Full Self-Driving (Supervised) (also known as Autosteer on City Streets) does not make Model S autonomous and requires a fully attentive driver who is ready to take immediate action at all times.” The manual’s wording is specific to Model S; vehicle and software applicability can vary.

Tesla’s support page for Full Self-Driving (Supervised) describes the feature and its supervision requirement. The terminology matters: a driver-assistance feature may control steering or speed in supported situations, but the driver remains responsible for monitoring the road and intervening.
Can FSD make sudden maneuvers?
Tesla’s manual explicitly warns that “Model S may quickly and suddenly make unexpected maneuvers or mistakes that require immediate driver intervention.” It also identifies narrow roads with oncoming cars as a situation where intervention may be needed. That warning makes this kind of road scenario particularly relevant, but it does not prove what caused the movement shown in the video.

For U.S. drivers, NHTSA’s automated vehicle safety guidance says every vehicle currently for sale in the United States requires the driver’s full attention at all times for safe operation. The practical response to a driver-assistance system behaving unexpectedly is to stay engaged and take control when needed, rather than assuming the system will correct itself.

The video report is an example of a reported maneuver, not a basis for calculating how often FSD makes errors or comparing its safety with another system. Tesla’s support page cites company-reported figures of “7x fewer major and minor collisions” and “5x fewer off-highway collisions” for Tesla vehicles with FSD (Supervised) engaged. Those are Tesla’s own claims; the cited passage does not establish the comparison period or provide enough methodology to treat them as independently verified findings.
