Elon Musk announced the plan on January 28, 2026. Tesla later said the first-generation Optimus line replacing the S/X lines was being designed for annual capacity of approximately one million robots.
That does not mean Tesla is currently building one million Optimus robots a year—or that the robot has already become a commercial success. The confirmed story is a factory-space and product-portfolio reallocation: two low-volume, long-running electric-car programs are being wound down while Tesla prepares a new robotics manufacturing operation.

What happened to the Model S and Model X?
Tesla announced on January 28, 2026, as part of its fourth-quarter and full-year 2025 update, that final Model S and Model X production would take place in the following quarter. The Fremont space used for those vehicles would then be repurposed for Optimus production.

Later reporting placed the final S and X vehicles at Fremont in early May. Tesla’s second-quarter production-and-delivery release listed 8,822 vehicles under the broad “Other Models” category, but that figure does not establish a complete final production count for the two discontinued models. The most accurate summary is that Model S and Model X production ended during the second quarter, with the final vehicles reportedly built in early May.
By late July, reporting indicated that equipment associated with the Fremont Optimus line was being installed or operated in the former S/X area. That is evidence of conversion and preparation—not proof that Tesla had reached sustained, high-volume robot production.
The difference between planned capacity and actual production
Tesla’s one-million-unit figure is easy to overstate. It refers to the design capacity of a planned first-generation Fremont line. It is not a reported production result, sales forecast, or confirmed annual output.

There are four separate claims that should not be treated as interchangeable:
- Tesla announced the end of Model S and Model X production. This happened in January 2026.
- Tesla planned to replace the S/X manufacturing lines with an Optimus line. Tesla confirmed this in its first-quarter update.
- Tesla began preparing and converting the relevant Fremont space. Later reporting and company-related activity indicated progress on that work.
- Tesla achieved reliable, high-volume Optimus production. The available public record had not established this as of August 12, 2026.
Musk has also acknowledged that early Optimus output would be difficult to predict. A humanoid robot contains many different parts and requires a new production process, so installing equipment is only one step toward a repeatable commercial manufacturing system.
Why is Tesla giving up its two flagship cars?
The immediate reason is straightforward: Tesla wants to reuse manufacturing space at Fremont. The company’s stated strategic reason is broader. Its 2025 investor materials described Tesla as transitioning toward a “physical AI” company, with autonomy, robotics, and other AI-enabled products becoming increasingly important alongside electric vehicles and energy storage.

Model S and Model X are Tesla’s oldest major vehicle programs. They occupy a different position from the company’s higher-volume Model 3 and Model Y. Tesla has not provided a single authoritative, directly comparable current profitability figure for the S/X manufacturing lines, so it would be too strong to say that the vehicles were discontinued solely because they were unprofitable.
Still, the portfolio logic is clear. A factory area dedicated to two relatively low-volume premium vehicles can either continue supporting those products or be redirected toward a program Tesla believes could become strategically much larger. Tesla has chosen the second option.
What this says about Tesla’s strategy
The factory decision is one of the clearest physical signs that Tesla wants to be more than an electric-car company. Its filings and investor materials present several connected businesses and future ambitions:
- Electric vehicles and energy storage remain core businesses.
- FSD Supervised and other autonomy efforts are intended to expand the value of Tesla’s software and vehicle fleet.
- Robotaxi services are part of Tesla’s future transportation strategy.
- Optimus is being developed as a general-purpose autonomous humanoid robot capable of bringing AI into the physical world.
Moving an existing vehicle line out and a robotics line in gives that strategy a tangible manufacturing commitment. Tesla is not merely showing a prototype at an event; it is allocating factory space and equipment to the project.
But the move also concentrates execution risk. Optimus still has to demonstrate that it can be manufactured consistently, operate safely, perform useful tasks, attract paying customers, and produce acceptable economics. None of those outcomes follows automatically from the closure of the S/X lines.
What happens to the Model S and Model X now?
Tesla’s consumer situation is more nuanced than “the cars disappeared overnight.” There are four different categories to distinguish:

New factory production
Production ended or was being wound down during the second quarter of 2026. The Model X product page now states that the vehicle is no longer in production. The Model S page may continue to display specifications, ordering controls, or inventory-related information, but that should not be interpreted as proof that Tesla has resumed building new cars.
Remaining new-car inventory
Some new Model S or Model X vehicles may remain in Tesla inventory in particular markets or locations while supplies last. An available vehicle can be a leftover unit built before the shutdown; it is not evidence that the production program is continuing.
Pre-owned vehicles
Used Model S and Model X cars remain part of Tesla’s pre-owned ecosystem and are also available through independent sellers. Tesla’s pre-owned program includes vehicle inspection and used-vehicle warranty terms, subject to the applicable market and vehicle conditions.

Ending production does not mean existing owners are being abandoned. Tesla has said support for current owners will continue, and it continues to publish Model S and Model X manuals and service information. Parts availability, repair economics, software support, and wait times can change over a vehicle’s life, but those issues are different from the end of new-car assembly.
What Model S and Model X owners should do
Owners do not need to panic-buy a car simply because production has ended. The practical response is to keep normal maintenance up to date and confirm the support situation for the specific vehicle, model year, and market.
- Save the owner’s manual and relevant service records.
- Check the condition and replacement schedule for tires, brakes, wiper components, and other wear items.
- Keep charging equipment and adapters organized and inspect cables for damage.
- Review the vehicle’s warranty and any applicable service plans before authorizing major work.
- When buying used, verify battery condition, accident history, title status, mileage, warranty eligibility, and software or hardware configuration.
- Confirm compatibility by model year before buying accessories, key-fob cases, floor mats, charging equipment, or emergency gear.
Small ownership items worth protecting
Discontinued vehicles often make ordinary replacement items more important. A compatible Tesla Model S key fob cover can help protect an easily misplaced or damaged key fob, particularly for owners keeping an older car for many years. Model X owners should likewise check fitment before buying a Tesla Model X key fob cover, because key-fob designs and accessory compatibility can vary by vehicle generation and model year.
These are general ownership accessories, not Tesla-endorsed products. Check the seller’s compatibility information, return policy, and the exact key-fob design before purchasing.

Does Tesla really plan to build one million Optimus robots?
Tesla plans to build the Fremont line with approximately one million robots of annual capacity. That is an ambitious engineering and manufacturing target, not a verified near-term output figure.
The scale is notable because humanoid robots are not simply cars with different body panels. Optimus requires a large number of distinct mechanical, electrical, sensing, computing, and actuator components. Tesla must develop suppliers, assembly processes, testing procedures, software integration, quality controls, and safety systems at the same time.
Tesla’s first-generation Fremont line is not the only Optimus manufacturing project in its plans. The company has separately described a Texas line for a longer-term second-generation facility with substantially greater capacity. The existence of a future Texas facility does not establish that the Fremont line has reached its target or that either facility is producing robots for ordinary consumers.
What has been confirmed about Optimus—and what has not?

| Can the public buy a Tesla Optimus robot? | No public consumer availability was established by the sources reviewed. |
| Has Tesla announced a reliable household launch date or final price? | Not established in the available record. Any such claims should be treated as forward-looking unless Tesla provides current official details. |
The biggest risk is execution, not factory space
Converting a production area is visible and measurable. The harder questions come afterward:

- Demand: Are businesses or consumers willing to pay enough to support the program?
- Economics: Can Tesla sell or operate the robots profitably after manufacturing, maintenance, software, and support costs?
The end of Model S and Model X proves that Tesla is willing to sacrifice product continuity to pursue this strategy. It does not prove that Optimus will succeed. The company has created room for the bet; it still has to deliver the result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the decision matters to car buyers
For Tesla shoppers, the decision reduces the company’s range of premium electric cars. Buyers interested in a large luxury Tesla may need to choose from remaining inventory, look at the used market, or consider other brands. The Model S and Model X may retain appeal because of their performance, software ecosystem, charging access, and distinctive designs, but future ownership should be evaluated as ownership of discontinued models.

That does not automatically make either vehicle a bad purchase. A well-maintained used Model S or Model X can still meet an owner’s needs. It does mean buyers should place more weight on vehicle condition, warranty coverage, repair costs, battery health, parts availability, and local service capability than on the assumption that the model will remain in regular production.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did Tesla completely shut down the Fremont factory?
No. The evidence concerns the Model S and Model X production lines or associated space at Fremont, not the entire factory. Tesla is reallocating that space for Optimus while other Fremont operations continue.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I still buy a new Model S or Model X?
Possibly, depending on market and location. Remaining new vehicles may be inventory built before production ended. Availability does not mean Tesla has resumed manufacturing the models.
Will Tesla still service existing Model S and Model X vehicles?
Tesla has said support for existing owners will continue, and it continues to publish manuals and service information. Actual repair options, parts timing, and warranty terms depend on the vehicle and market.
Is Optimus already in mass production?
The available information supports line preparation and conversion, but not sustained production at the planned one-million-robots-per-year rate.
The Bottom Line
Tesla has ended the Model S and Model X production programs to free Fremont space for Optimus. The move is a serious commitment to Tesla’s robotics and physical-AI strategy, but the one-million-robot figure is planned line capacity—not current output. Existing S and X owners can continue using Tesla’s service and pre-owned support ecosystem, while buyers should treat remaining new inventory and used cars as discontinued-model purchases.
