Tesla Ends Model S and Model X Production at Fremont, Shifts Space to Optimus

Tesla announced an end to Model S and Model X production in Q2 2026, then reported decommissioning the Fremont lines as Optimus lines were installed. The robot capacity figure is a design target, not production output.

Tesla announced on January 28, 2026, that it planned to end Model S and Model X production in the second quarter. By its July Q2 update, the company said those Fremont manufacturing lines had been decommissioned and Optimus lines were being installed in their place. Tesla described the first robot builds as intended for training and development—not as evidence of mass production.

Is Tesla discontinuing the Model S and Model X?

Yes. Tesla announced that it would end production of both vehicles in Q2 2026. The announcement came publicly from CEO Elon Musk during the company’s January 28 earnings call; it was not a quiet or unannounced decision. Axios reported Musk saying, “It’s time to basically bring the Model S and X programs to an end with an honorable discharge because we’re really moving into a future that is based on autonomy,” and describing the decision as “slightly sad.” Axios’s January 28 report covered the announcement.

The planned end date and the physical shutdown are separate milestones. Tesla’s July 22 Q2 update later said the Fremont S/X lines had been decommissioned. Neither source gives an exact final production date for either model. Tesla’s investor materials report the later factory status.

Why is Tesla ending Model S and Model X production?

Musk framed the decision as a shift toward a future based on autonomy, while Tesla’s factory plan connects the vacated production space to Optimus, its humanoid-robot program. The evidence establishes the company’s stated direction and the planned use of the S/X space; it does not establish that Optimus robots have replaced the vehicles in output or revenue.

Axios reported that Tesla delivered 59,900 vehicles other than Model 3 and Model Y in 2025, down 36% from 2024. That combined category includes vehicles beyond Model S and Model X, so it is not an S/X-only sales figure and cannot show how much either model contributed to the decision. Axios’s report provides the aggregate context.

What will Tesla make in the Fremont space instead?

Tesla said it was installing first-generation Optimus production lines in the area formerly used for Model S and Model X. In its Q2 update, the company said initial builds were intended to support training-data collection and functionality development, with production expected to start soon. That wording describes a development stage and expected start—not confirmation that a production ramp had begun. Tesla’s Q2 investor update describes the installation and intended use of early builds.

One million robots a year is a design target, not current output

Tesla’s Q1 2026 update described the first-generation Fremont Optimus line as designed for one million robots per year. The same deck cautioned that installed capacity is not equivalent to actual production. The figure is therefore a stated design capacity, not an achieved annual rate or a forecast that one million robots will be built in a year. Tesla’s Q1 update deck contains the design target and qualification.

Is the entire Fremont factory becoming a robot plant?

No. The change described by Tesla concerns the Model S and Model X production lines and the space they occupied, not the whole Fremont factory. On January 28, the City of Fremont said Tesla would continue mass production of refreshed Model 3 and Model Y vehicles there alongside Optimus and potential future vehicle programs. The City of Fremont’s statement provides that local context.

What do Tesla’s latest production figures say about Model S and Model X?

Tesla’s October 2, 2026, Q3 release reported 7,004 vehicles produced and 8,295 delivered in the combined “Other Models” category. It did not break the category down by model, so those totals cannot establish whether Model S or Model X units were included or how many of either were produced or delivered. Tesla’s Q3 vehicle release reports the aggregate figures.
