Tesla Dropped Basic Autopilot From New U.S. Orders: What Drivers Get Now

Tesla reportedly dropped basic Autopilot from new U.S. orders, leaving TACC standard and Autosteer in the FSD offering. Here’s what that means for buyers and owners.

Tesla no longer includes basic Autopilot on new U.S. orders, according to reports published January 23, 2026. The change removes Autosteer—the lane-steering assistance many drivers mean when they ask about “lane centering for free”—from the reported baseline package. Tesla says Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (TACC) and active safety features remain standard; its currently documented route to the broader feature set is FSD (Supervised), listed at $99 per month in the U.S. The change concerns new orders, not every Tesla already on the road.

What changed on new Tesla orders?

TechCrunch and Ars Technica reported on January 23, 2026, that Tesla discontinued basic Autopilot on new U.S. orders. Under the reported change, TACC remains the baseline, while Autosteer is included with the FSD offering. These are contemporaneous reports of the order change; an official dated Tesla announcement was not identified in the sources available here.

That distinction matters: the change does not mean Tesla removed Autosteer from vehicles that already had it. It describes the reported equipment and software offering for affected new U.S. orders. Check the specific vehicle’s order configuration, because Tesla says availability depends on vehicle configuration, hardware, software, region, model, trim, and model year.

What do TACC and Autosteer actually do?

Basic Autopilot historically combined two distinct functions: TACC controls speed and following distance, while Autosteer assists with steering to keep the vehicle in its lane. A Tesla service bulletin hosted by NHTSA describes Basic Autopilot as including both, and cautions that it is a hands-on feature: Tesla service bulletin hosted by NHTSA.

Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (TACC)

TACC maintains a set speed and adjusts speed to preserve a following distance. Tesla says active safety features and TACC come standard, though availability can vary by vehicle and market. TACC does not steer for you: Tesla states, “While Traffic-Aware Cruise Control is engaged, you are still responsible for steering.” See Tesla’s Active Safety Features and Traffic-Aware Cruise Control page.

Autosteer

Autosteer assists with lane steering. It is the key difference for someone who wants lane-centering assistance as well as adaptive cruise control. The historical Basic Autopilot package paired it with TACC; the January 2026 reports say it is no longer in the basic offering for new U.S. orders.

What is included now, and what costs extra?

Option What it does Cost and purchase path Driver responsibility and eligibility
Standard TACC and active safety features TACC maintains set speed and following distance; the driver steers. Tesla says these features come standard. The current support page does not state a separate charge. The driver remains responsible for steering. Availability varies by configuration, hardware, software, region, model, trim, and model year.
FSD (Supervised) Includes the broader driver-assistance feature set; Tesla’s current support page identifies Autosteer among its capabilities. Exact functions depend on the vehicle and market. Tesla currently lists a U.S. subscription at $99 USD per month; its support page says it is subscription-only and not available for outright purchase. Buyers can add it while ordering; existing owners can subscribe in the app or vehicle touchscreen. Requires active driver supervision and does not make the vehicle autonomous. Availability varies by configuration, hardware, software, region, model, trim, and model year.

Price and availability are subject to change. The $99 monthly price is Tesla’s listed U.S. rate as of October 4, 2026, not a guaranteed future price. Check Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) support page and subscription FAQ for current terms and vehicle eligibility.

Does an FSD subscription make a Tesla self-driving?

No. Tesla says FSD (Supervised) requires active driver supervision. Its support page states: “None of these advanced driver assistance features make your Tesla vehicle fully autonomous or replace you as the driver.” The driver must remain engaged and responsible, rather than treating the system as a substitute for driving.

What this means for current owners and new buyers

  • If you already own a Tesla with Autosteer: The reports concern new U.S. orders; they do not establish that Tesla has removed the feature from previously equipped vehicles.
  • If you are considering a new U.S. order: Confirm the exact included features for that vehicle in the order configurator. The reported baseline is TACC, while FSD (Supervised) is the listed subscription option for the broader feature set.
  • If you only want adaptive cruise: TACC is the relevant standard feature, but it does not provide lane steering.
  • If lane-steering assistance is essential: Verify Autosteer availability for the exact car and region before ordering or subscribing. Features vary, and the subscription price and terms may change.

Tesla’s current feature details and limitations are on its FSD support page and TACC support page.
