Tesla was reported to have dismissed most of its roughly 500-person Supercharger organization in late April 2024—not definitively every employee. The company said it would slow new-site growth, not stop it, and May reporting said Tesla had begun rehiring some former staff, not rebuilding the whole team.
Did Tesla fire the entire Supercharger team?
No verified headcount establishes that every employee was dismissed. The Associated Press reported in late April 2024 that several team leaders said the roughly 500-person Supercharger organization had been laid off. The safer description is that most, or virtually all, of the group was affected. Charging chief Rebecca Tinucci was among those leaving, according to the AP.
That distinction matters: “the entire team” turns a reported approximate count into a certainty the available reporting does not support.
Did Tesla freeze Supercharger development?
No. Elon Musk said Tesla would continue building, but at a slower pace for new locations, with greater attention to uptime and expansion at existing sites. The AP reproduced his description as “just at a slower pace for new locations and more focus on 100% uptime and expansion of existing locations.” He also said Tesla would complete locations already under construction. That was Tesla’s stated plan at the time, not evidence of what the network later delivered.

Did Tesla rehire the Supercharger team?
Not as a whole, based on the May 2024 reporting. The Information reported that Tesla began hiring back some members of the dismissed group and identified Max de Zegher as a returning manager. That report does not establish that all former employees returned or that Tinucci was rehired.
Why the staffing cuts raised concerns
The timing made operational continuity important: other automakers were working to integrate their electric vehicles with Tesla’s charging network. The AP reported concerns that vehicle integration could become harder without staff supporting charging hardware and software operations. Guidehouse Insights analyst Sam Abuelsamid told the AP that maintaining the equipment and software required a team.
