The Dual Motor estimate fell from 470+ to 445+ miles, while the expected production start moved from early to mid-2025. In May 2025, Tesla reportedly told customers who had reserved the accessory that it would not sell it and would refund their deposits. Those 2024 range figures were estimates for a planned product, not current Cybertruck specifications.
What changed in Tesla’s 2024 announcement?
In October 2024, Electrek reported that Tesla had revised the Range Extender’s expected production start from early 2025 to mid-2025 and lowered the extender-inclusive range estimate for the Dual Motor Cybertruck from 470+ to 445+ miles. The difference is about 25 miles, calculated from the two reported estimates. Tesla did not explain the change, so its cause is not established. Electrek’s October 2024 report described changes shown on Tesla’s website/configurator.
What range figures were announced?
The figures varied by Cybertruck configuration and, for the Cyberbeast, wheel and tire setup. Electrek reported these Tesla estimates in 2024:

Did Tesla cancel the Cybertruck Range Extender?
Yes. In May 2025, Electrek reported that Tesla had notified owners who reserved the accessory that it was no longer planning to sell it and would refund their deposits. InsideEVs reproduced the notice, attributed to “The Tesla Team”: “We are no longer planning to sell the Range Extender for Cybertruck. As a result, we will be refunding your deposit in full. The amount will be returned to the original payment method used for the transaction.” No individual speaker or job title was identified. InsideEVs reported historical planned terms of a $16,000 pack price and a $2,000 reservation deposit. Those figures describe the canceled offer, not a current product or price. The reported notice said deposits would be returned to the original payment method. InsideEVs

Why advertised range is not a real-world guarantee
Tesla’s Cybertruck owner manual says the displayed driving range is an estimate of remaining battery energy based on EPA-rated consumption and may not account for personal driving patterns or external conditions. The manual also warns that towing and carrying accessories add weight and drag and can significantly decrease range. These cautions apply when interpreting vehicle range generally; they do not explain why Tesla changed the Range Extender estimate in 2024.
