The evidence supports a real reputational problem, but it does not show that politics alone caused Tesla’s sales changes—or that every Tesla buyer shares the same reaction.
What the buyer data show—and what they measure
Strategic Vision figures reported by Fortune track the partisan composition of Tesla buyers, not the percentage of Democrats who bought or rejected a Tesla. The study covered 250,000 new-vehicle buyers; the figures below are the reported shares of Tesla buyers in specific periods.
| Period | Democrats among Tesla buyers | Republicans among Tesla buyers | Independents among Tesla buyers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model years 2022 and 2023 | 40% | 29% in 2022 | 28% in 2022 |
| October/November 2023 | 15% at the beginning of model year 2024 | 32% | 44% |
| March 2024 | 35% | Not stated (Fortune report of Strategic Vision) | Not stated (Fortune report of Strategic Vision) |
The Democratic share’s decline and partial recovery are consistent with a shift in who was buying Tesla vehicles, rather than a simple, one-way exodus. These snapshots also cannot identify why individual buyers chose a Tesla or another brand. Fortune reported that some Democratic former Tesla buyers chose competitors, but the buyer-share figures alone do not establish that Musk’s politics caused those decisions.
Did the backlash extend beyond Democratic consumers?
A June 2025 Electric Vehicle Intelligence Report survey by Slingshot Strategies asked 8,000 consumers how Musk’s time in government affected their views. As reported by EVIR, 37% said they felt less favorably toward Tesla and 10% more favorably; 38% said they were less likely to consider a Tesla, while 6% said they were more likely. These are reported attitudes and intentions, not completed purchases.
#1 Best Overall
- Boy's model toy car: The body is made of alloy material, with exquisite paint craftsmanship and good durability.
- Realistic alloy model car: The 1:32 interior decoration is realistic, with six doors that can be opened. The steering wheel and seats have simulated designs.
- Toy car with lights and music: Opening the car door can light up the lights and simulate the sound of an engine starting. It's a toy car that boys like.
- Companion to Decoration and Cake Decorations: It plays a great decorative role on display cabinets at home and is a great decoration for boys' birthday cake parties.
- Gift selection for toy cars for boys aged 3-12: This gift is suitable for children aged 3 and above and is a collectible for car enthusiasts.
The consideration responses varied by party, but negative answers appeared in all three groups:
| Respondents | Less likely to consider Tesla | More likely to consider Tesla |
|---|---|---|
| Democrats | 59% | 5% |
| Independents | 36% | 4% |
| Republicans | 18% | 7% |
EVIR also reported that Republicans were 11 percentage points less likely to consider Tesla after Musk’s split with Donald Trump than they had been in April 2025. That finding complicates the idea that Musk’s alignment with conservative politics necessarily brought Republican consumers to the brand. It remains a survey measure of stated consideration, not a count of Republican buyers gained or lost.

How Yale researchers estimated a sales effect
Four Yale researchers—Kenneth Gillingham, Matthew Kotchen, Jonathan Levinsohn and William Nalebuff—estimated that Tesla may have lost more than one million sales because of Musk’s partisan activity. Yale described this as a counterfactual estimate, not a tally of cancelled orders or identifiable customers who walked away.
The researchers examined buying patterns from October 2022, when Musk bought Twitter, through April 2025. As Yale’s October 2025 account explains, they compared changes in Democratic and Republican purchasing patterns and also examined how those groups chose Tesla versus other electric vehicles and hybrids. Their argument is that factors such as a lack of new models and stronger competition should affect party groups similarly; the divergence in their observed patterns is the basis for attributing a portion of the difference to Musk’s political turn.

That comparison offers more than a simple correlation, but it still depends on the counterfactual assumption that other forces did not produce the divergence between groups. The estimate should therefore be read as the researchers’ model-based conclusion, not as a verified number of lost sales.
Why politics is not the only explanation for weaker sales
Tesla’s product cycle and competitive position changed at the same time as its public image. Yale’s account notes that the company had gone several years without launching a new mainstream model as Ford, GM, Hyundai and other automakers improved their offerings. The Associated Press also cited Tesla’s aging lineup, competition, buyers waiting for a refreshed Model Y and political backlash as possible contributors to weaker demand.

Tesla reported 336,681 global deliveries in the first quarter of 2025, compared with 387,000 in the first quarter of 2024, according to the Associated Press. Those company-wide totals show a year-over-year decline, but they do not isolate the effect of political controversy from product timing, competition or broader electric-vehicle market conditions.

The strongest defensible conclusion is that Tesla’s political association became a measurable liability in consumer attitudes and coincided with a marked change in the political composition of its buyers. The buyer study, intention survey and Yale estimate answer different questions, however: who bought Teslas, what respondents say they might consider, and what a model estimates might have happened under a different political trajectory. Taken together, they support a qualified account of alienation—not proof that Musk’s politics alone explain Tesla’s sales performance.
