When was Tesla Battery Day?
Tesla held its 2020 Annual Meeting of Stockholders and Battery Day on Tuesday, September 22, at 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time. Battery Day followed the meeting, and Tesla made a public webcast and presentation materials available. Tesla’s event page preserves the event information and materials. The company had announced on August 21 that Battery Day would be a separate event immediately following the annual meeting. Tesla’s Investor Relations notice described changes to the meeting’s timing, format, and location.
What did Tesla announce?
Tesla framed the 4680 as part of a manufacturing and vehicle-system plan, rather than as a standalone consumer battery product. The presentation connected cell design to electrode production, factory scale, and pack changes. Tesla’s 2020 Impact Report describes the 4680 cell and dry-electrode process, while the company’s Investor Relations archive lists Battery Day highlights and related materials.
The 4680 cell and tabless architecture
The 4680 name refers to the cell’s cylindrical format: 46 millimeters in diameter and 80 millimeters long. Tesla presented the format alongside a tabless architecture, which was intended to support higher power and a redesigned production system. The significance of the announcement was the proposed combination of cell dimensions and manufacturing changes—not a claim that changing cell size alone would deliver every projected vehicle benefit.

Dry-electrode manufacturing
Tesla described a process intended to move from cathode or anode powder directly to an electrode film. In the company’s account, this would avoid the liquid mixing and large drying ovens used in conventional electrode production. Tesla’s 2020 Impact Report estimated that the dry-electrode process could use at least 70% less energy in the overall cell-manufacturing phase. That figure is Tesla’s estimate, not a third-party-verified measurement or a demonstrated saving across all production.
The same report said in-house cathode-material manufacturing had the potential to reduce energy use in that step by 40%. Tesla presented this as potential, not as an independently confirmed or broadly realized reduction.

Pack and factory production
Tesla also presented the 4680 within a broader production redesign, linking the cell to changes in battery packs and factory processes. The company’s materials preserve the roadmap and its intended connections, but the event announcement alone does not establish the production status of every initiative discussed that day.
What range and power gains did Tesla claim?
At the presentation, Elon Musk said that the 4680 design would deliver five times the energy, six times the power, and a 16% range increase “just form factor alone.” The wording is reproduced in a third-party transcript of the event. These were claims made during the presentation, not independently verified outcomes or a guarantee of the same real-world range improvement in every Tesla vehicle.

The distinction matters: Tesla’s figures describe intended benefits of its design and manufacturing roadmap. The cited event materials do not provide a like-for-like independent comparison covering cell architecture, manufacturing energy, pack integration, vehicle range, and production maturity.
